NEW YORK, NY (FOX FUSE) - Mavado featuring Karian Sang's "Take It" music video gets an MTV debut today, as it is posted as the top story on their cutting-edge global music and pop-culture channel, MTVIggy.com. The single is produced by Troyton Music and distributed by Zojak World Wide, and its music video continues to rack up rave reviews and garner the spotlight on media channels all over the world.

"Take It" is the first music video from a Caribbean artist to nab an exclusive premiere by Billboard, a fact that ignited interest in this particular Mavado release, and is even referenced in the MTV Iggy piece. The video was produced in Jamaica against a classic Caribbean backdrop, and brings authentic dancehall flavors to the global audience.

MTV Iggy's international music and pop culture writer Marlon Bishop interviewed Mavado via phone from Kingston, Jamaica in early March, to highlight the "Take It" video and also catch up with the dancehall star, who Bishop suggests may be "dancehall's last superstar standing."

By Marc Parc
OutAroad.com Writer

mavado_lil_wayne_cash_money_records.jpgThe international platform for prominent Dancehall singjay, Mavado keeps growing after a major merger within hip-hop circles has made him part of another highly regarded record label.

Last Summer, Mavado signed his first international record deal with DJ Khaled's We The Best Music Group and has since release reputable efforts such as Emergency with label mate, Ace Hood as well as Survivor featuring Senegalese-American hip-hop artiste, Akon and Soulja Girl. Additionally, the Do Road singer has been touring across the United States in recent months in an effort to market himself in the country following the re-issuance of his visa last July.

Earlier this week, Cash Money Records co-founder, Birdman announced that his label has now signed We The Best Music Group under their imprint, making Mavado an affiliate of the Young Money Cash Money Billionaires (YMCMB) as he's now under the Cash Money umbrella.
According to Mavado's long-time manager, Julian Jones-Griffiths, he and the Gully Gaad have been aware of this deal for quite some time, even before the singjay signed with We The Best Music Group and believes that the deal will be beneficial for all parties involved.

Dancehall Superstar Mavado working on new album with DJ Khaled - To shoot video with Ne-Yo

By Marc Parc
OutAroad.com Writer

Prominent Dancehall singjay, David "Mavado" Brooks, continues to elevate his international status as he's set to unveil two new collaborative projects with American, superstar artistes.

Mavado was recently in the West African nation of Ghana as he gave his first African performance inside the Accra Sports Stadium in the country's capital city. Reportedly, there was pandemonium amongst the 10,000 fans in attendance once he graced the stage; performing a slew of hit singles such as "So Special," amongst countless others. Afterwards, Mavado was quoted by Ghanaian media as suggesting that it was one of his best performances and that he’d like to perform in other African countries very soon.

Mavado, who recently returned from a promotional tour in the United States, is looking to build on the momentum he has gained on the worldwide stage as he's set to unveil his debut album with DJ Khaled's We The Best Music Group. Last month, the Alliance-affiliated singjay signed a record deal with the American hip-hop disc jock turned artiste's label and later recorded the hit single, "Emergency" alongside label mate, Ace Hood.

Dancehall Superstar Mavado Rocks Africa

mavado_africa_concert_ghana_show.jpg

With a long list of achievements already accomplished in Mavado's incredible career, Gully Gad passed a personal milestone last weekend by performing in Africa for the first time. Mavado performed in front of a 10,000-strong crowd inside the capitol's Accra Sports Stadium, in Ghana.

"Long time mi suppose to reach Africa fi sing fi di people," said Mavado. "But nothing before time. It was a great experience and I felt so at home there. Ghana reminded me so much of Jamaica, I loved it."

From the moment Mavado arrived in Ghana it was pandemonium as crowds followed him everywhere he went, wether on foot, bike or car as he did the promotional rounds and hung out at various spots in Accra. Indeed Mavado had to remain in his car for nearly 20 minutes when he arrived at the stadium, such was the throng of excitement surrounding the motorcade that brought him in. It was triumphant chaos when Mavado finally emerged from his vehicle to enter the Stadium's field, surrounded by highly enthusiastic fans who formed a massive circle around him as he walked.

Promoters Fantasy Entertainment put on a great event inside the stadium, drawing the biggest crowd ever seen for a Reggae event in Ghana. A slew of Ghanaian performers put on great performances, from Reggae and Dancehall, rap, drumming and traditional genres. Samini was the local headliner, who put on a great show with his band before he made way for Gully Gad, backed by his Anger Management band.

By Marc Parc
OutAroad.com Writer

mavado_khaled_sign_miami.jpgInternationally renowned Dancehall artiste, David Constantine Brooks, better known as Mavado, has earned him a major, overseas record deal. The prominent popular singjay announced during an interview with HOT 97's Angie Martinez that he's signed a record deal with DJ Khaled's We The Best Music Group.

Mavado took to the airwaves of the popular, New York City based radio station, HOT 97 to break the big news; prior to DJ Khaled's elaboration regarding Mavado's new deal. "That's right, New York City! Mavado is officially signed to We The Best Music Group," said an overjoyed Khaled. The Miami born hip-hop superstar and disc jock explained the reasoning behind the new deal with the "Gully Gaad."

"Mavado's part of the family; part of the brand. It's about to be an expansion to the movement. It's going to be a movie, you feel me? I'm really excited about this because my roots and where I come from, I've known Mavado since before he was Mavado. Mavado always puts great music out, and I just want to add more to it, add some steroids to it," Khaled told HOT 97. Mavado featured on the remix for Khaled's smash hit, "Welcome To My Hood," in March alongside hip-hop superstars Jadacris, T-Pain and Busta Rhymes amongst others.

The announcement comes nearly two months after Mavado was re-issued a United States visa by the United States Embassy in Kingston. Furthermore, this comes four months after Mavado launched his own record label, Mansion Records and released his hit, debut single via the label, "Delilah" shortly thereafter. "Delilah" was added to HOT 97's regular playlist earlier this week.

Diplo Prodcucer of Beyonce's Run The World - To Remix Mavado's Delilah

mavado_diplo_remix_delilah_reggae.jpgSuper Producer Diplo came to prominence behind the boards of M.I.A's Grammy-nominated Paper Planes single, before going on to work with the likes of Shakira, Kid Cudi, Bruno Mars, Snoop Dogg and Beyonce's recent Run the World (Girls) single. A huge fan of Jamaican music, his Major Lazer project - a melting pot of dancehall with a host of musical styles, featured a number of Jamaican acts. Diplo has now turned his beat-making skills to Mavado's smash single, Delilah (Mansion Records), giving it a "Dubstep" remix. Dubstep is a drum and bass-heavy electronic dance music genre that originated in London, UK.

"Mavado is a legend," expounds Diplo. "I tried a few things on the mix but this Dubstep style is really popping off. Mavado's voice lends itself so well to that deep bass sound. I want to introduce his Delilah song, a phenomenal record in its own right, and his whole vibe to a new audience. And of course its always a pleasure working with Alliance crew, they run the road."

Delilah Diplo Remix will be released via iTunes next Tuesday, to be followed soon by all other digital outlets.

"This Diplo Remix of Delilah takes the record into a whole other direction," said a representative of Mansion Records. "Since we dropped the single at the end of May, Delilah has been gathering great momentum locally but especially overseas where we have great hopes that the record will cross into other markets. We think this Dubstep remix will certainly help do that."

Dancehall Artiste Mavado roars in Cayman

mavado_cayman_island_concert.jpgGrand Cayman got its first up close and personal look at Mavado last Friday, as the Gully Gad gave his first ever performance there since bursting on to the scene in 2005. Cayman Islands had been one of the territories in the Caribbean that had declined Mavado entry up to this point but careful consideration by immigration and police there led them to take the decision that Mavado wasnt the stereotype they had been led to believe.

Upon his arrival Mavado was whisked to a welcome party at Margaritaville before the following day's round of radio and TV promotional appearances to convince Caymanians that he really was in the island. With anticipation at a high, Mavado performed at the famous Lions Centre in Georgetown to a packed house. Touching the stage at around 2am, Gully Gad rinsed hit after hit from his huge catalogue of anthems. Opening with So Blessed, Mavado had the crowd singing along to every word as he took them on a musical journey, ending with Star Bwoy. As always, the concert was packed with females who screamed and grabbed at Mavado throughout the 75 minute performance. After two encores, Mavado finally exited the stage but couldnt exit the venue for nearly an hour later as he took photos with hordes of fans.

"We had Tyson travel with us on that trip to capture the history as it unfolded," says manager Julian Jones-Griffith. "It was a moment in time that needed to be captured and the footage we got was even more than we expected. It was a very memorable weekend and we have it all recorded. We are going to release a DVD/music package this Summer made from that weekend and a couple other trips we shot as well. It's going to give Mavado's fans a chance to see him like never before and this Star Bwoy video will give them a teaser of that. It all came together perfectly when we decided to also use Tyson to shoot the Star Bwoy video."

MTV: Mavado Gets Wrapped Up!

Submitted by Joseph Patterson
MTV Wrapped Up

Marvin Sparks recently spoke with Mavado about his new direction, musically, how success has changed his life, dealing with negative press, his charity giving back to his community and working with Jay-Z, exclusively for The Wrap Up...

Dancehall artist Mavado was recently in the UK and our urban blog The Wrap Up managed to catch the Jamaican artist for a few words about his past, present and future.

The star opened up about how he is portrayed in the media and says that he doesn’t care, because they’re always trying to fabricate things to make him look bad.

mavado_mtv_wrapped_up_dancehall_artiste.jpg

Having witnessed Mavado headline alongside Gyptian at Brixton Academy, courtesy of www.phatnights.com, a few things were apparent for all to see. Biggest reactions (or forwards) appeared to be for what is known in dancehall circles as a "gal tune" segment; ‘House Cleaning’, ‘Stulla’, ‘Never Believe You’, ‘Roof Top’, ‘Gal Ah Mad Over’, ‘Come Into My Room’ and ‘When You Feel Lonely’. Ironic, because Mavado was more prolific with songs reflecting his gritty upbringing. A brief summary of his running order was a throwback to the early days with a "hardcore gangsta" segment, moving on to "gal tunes", closing the trouble-free concert with a conscious section consisting of uplifting songs: ‘Hope & Pray’, ‘Messiah’, ‘On The Rock’, ending on ‘Starlight’.

Born David Constantine Brooks, Mavado grew up in Cassava Piece, popularly known as the Gullyside. Not only did he live in a garrison community (ghetto), his father was murdered during the singjay's teenage years. Mavado's early material reflected his gritty experiences, for which he was widely criticised by Jamaican media. Despite all the negatives, he has risen above it, matured and is still regarded as one of the genre's elite artists almost 6 years on from breakthrough song, ‘Real McKoy’. Through his success, Mavado has traded the Gullyside for a house on the hill with luxurious vehicle's, including a customised Range Rover and motorbikes, but his content is still real to himself and his fans. On one of his many anthems, 'Mockingbird', he declares although he has a lot of money, he isn't interested in boasting ("Dem fi know mi money nuff but mi nuh inna di boasting"), instead choosing to inspire those who grow up in a similar garrison areas to appreciate life and strive for better - 'Nine Life' and 'Starlight' being best examples. Mavado's success has enabled to him to work with international artists, such as Akon, Wyclef Jean, Shyne, Rick Ross, Alicia Keys and Jay-Z.

Mavado's Real McKoy Birthday Celebration Cancelled

mavado_bash_cancelled_party.jpgDue to circumstances beyond our control, Mavado has taken the decision to cancel this year's staging of the LIME Real McKoy event.
We know there will be thousands of disappointed fans who had planned to attend, Mavado shares your disappointment.

We received a police permit on October 20 for the original venue, Coruba Beach Club, but were shocked to receive another letter from the same branch of the JCF revoking that permit just last week. Mavado has taken a huge financial loss in this endeavour as the promotion team did not spend a dollar until the police permit was in place. Alas, it seems not even that can be relied upon.

Since we received the letter of refusal at least 3 events have been held at that same venue, so while we are not surprised that Mavado's event has been targeted, its still a bitter pill. Alternative venues were sought out but the logistics were just too much to take on at the last minute so the decision was taken to pull the plug on the event for 2010.

If you can recall, this is something that seems to blight Mavado's birthday bash year after year, we leave it to the public to make up their own minds as to why that is.

We would like to thank our title sponsor LIME, a fantastic company who believes in Mavado and the positive image and music he outputs and continues to stand by him. Likewise Jagra, who played a big part in last year's staging of the event, alongside Appleton who came on board for the first time this year.

Mavado presents Stulla Wednesdays starting this week

Stulla-Wednesdays-Mavado.jpgWith the plethora of nightly events around Kingston, Dancehall megastar Mavado feels that there is still something lacking. As he prepares to launch his Guinness Stulla Wednesdays event inside the New Quad this week, he is confident that gap will be filled.

Guinness Stulla Wednesdays is taking partying to its roots, as an authentic Dancehall event in the fine tradition of Cactus, House of Leo and Mirage.

Since dropping the scorching "Stulla" single, the Stulla slang has spread like wildfire through the streets, with even ladies flipping it to call themselves "Stulliesha." The slang has been a topic of conversation all around town as everyone tags their own meaning to it.

"It seemed like the perfect name for the weekly event," explains Mavado. "Because it's so fresh and full of energy! Its a cutting edge event that will redefine entertainment in Kingston."

Drake - Mavado's Manager Responds To Criticism From Jamaican Minister

Source: contactmusic

drake_mavado_jamaica_artists.jpgA representative for dancehall star MAVADO has brushed off criticism from Jamaica's tourism minister about a cameo in rapper DRAKE's new video, after taking issue with his portrayal of a gun-toting local gangster.

Drake shot the promo for Find Your Love in the Jamaican cities of Kingston and St. Andrew, and follows the hip-hop star as he pursues a woman romantically linked to a gang leader named Puffy, played by Mavado.

The video ends with Drake being kidnapped and held at gunpoint, and bullets can be heard being fired as the screen fades to black.

Jamaica's Minister of Tourism Edmund Bartlett protested the content of the video last week (ends14May10), expressing his disappointment at the apparent link between the Caribbean country and gun culture.

Alliance marches through Canada

Mavadolondon.jpgMavado's historic 10 city tour which has Canada buzzing kicked off last night to a packed house in London, Ontario. The country-wide tour is already sold out and will culminate in front of a crowd of thousands next weekend at the Sound Academy in Toronto.

During next week Mavado, with opening acts Future Fambo and Stacious, will make the long trek to western Canada for shows in Edmonton, Calgary and Vancouver before heading back to several shows in and around Ontario.

The inaugural show in London saw a large and very mixed crowd, of mostly females, who were extremely responsive to the Gully Gad. Alliance selector Boom Boom whipped the crowd into a frenzy before Mavado took to the stage.

"There were a lot of different nations in there last night," said Mavado. "It's good to see them singing along to my new material as well as the older songs, which means Dancehall is definitely spreading to a wider audience."

With Mavado and the travelling party already experiencing snow blizzards and temperatures as low as -9, the heat he is bringing to Canada will definitely help.

Mavado shoots video with Wyclef Jean

clefvadoshoot.jpgGully Gad Mavado was in New York over the weekend shooting the video for "Hold On (Crossroads)" - the first single from multi-platinum artist Wyclef Jean's new album that features the Dancehall megastar.

Shot on location in Brooklyn's Navy Yard the video was shot through the night, climaxing with a scene overlooking the East River towards Manhattan as the sun came up.

The song is a lament for all the fallen soldiers and is widely tipped to become an instant classic. With the song and video about to impact mainstream airwaves in the coming weeks, it looks like Mavado's rise to international super stardom is set to continue at a rapid pace.

"They say real recognises real," said Mavado. "Clef is one of the realest people in a business that is very corrupt and its always a pleasure to collaborate with him. He's a great friend and incredibly talented and I think this song is something special. We're all expecting it to do big things."

Wyclef's album is set for release in February 2010.

One 'Norman Brown' is more dangerous to society than ten 'Mavados'

mavado%5Bhope%5Dand%5Bpray%5D.jpgDear Editor,
Please allow me to respond to a letter that appeared in the Thursday, 10th September 2009 edition of the Stabroek News, titled "Mavado should not be allowed to perform in Guyana" and written by Norman Brown.

Despite all the bad that is said, it takes one (1) Norman Brown to incur far more danger than 10 Mavados to any society. This is clearly demonstrated when he stated "the government's decision to lift the ban has not been properly spelled out. However, I looked forward to Eric Phillips' contribution on the lifting of the ban. It is the Afro-Caribbean youth that is targeted here. This sort of music is given to them as their music. The government seems to be saying it is okay to tell our young men and women that "deh don't know da meanin, when meh seh marrow paste on da ceiling", obviously inferring to what he perceives as an attempt by the government to use the 'negatives' in Mavado's music in a disadvantageous way to Afro-Guyanese.

But then again, it is the same government that allows "Rum till I die' 'Mo rum fuh me' 'Yuh cud bring it in a bottle, yuh cud bring it in a flask' to be delivered to their Indo-Guyanese supporters and we all know the spin-offs from this.

Mavado should not be allowed to perform in Guyana

Below is a letter that was sent to stabroeknews complaining that Mavado should have not been allowed back in Guyana after he was removed from the country's list of banned artistes.

mavado-gangsta-forlife-deejay.jpgDear Editor,
I have said all there is to be said, in previous letters, on the subject of Mavado performing in Guyana. However, I have noted with concern, Jason Abdulla's letter, which seeks to justify why the 'gully god' should be allowed to perform within the boundaries of our eighty-three thousand square miles ('There has been a shift in Mavado's lyrics and he is now accepted around the world' SN, September 10).

Mr Abdulla makes a comparison between Adijah Palmer (Vybz Kartel) and David Brooks (Mavado). It is important to note that the two above-mentioned artistes are viewed as the Tupac and the Notorious BIG of the Caribbean. There is an ongoing feud between them which influences youths to be divided on either side of the violent fence. Within the realm of this genre of music, it is unfortunate that the influence impacts negatively on the black youth.

There has not been a shift in Mavado's lyrics; there has been an increase in his global popularity. He is a money-spinner in the music world. He is signed by top international labels and has done a feat with hardcore rapperJay Z.

Mavado & Alicia Keys arranged it in the Oven - "Great Chemistry"

mavado-gangsta-alicia-keys.jpgAfter another stellar performance recently at the HOT97 On Da Reggae Tip show, alongside fellow Alliance members Bounty Killer and Serani, Mavado shunned the after party scene for more important business...a studio session with multi-platinum superstar Alicia Keys.

"Last year we left the Reggae Tip show and recorded a track with Lil Kim and Wyclef, this year it was straight into the studio with Alicia Keys," said the Gully Gad. "I am very focused on my career right now and I'm just trying to elevate myself and Jamaica on a whole through music. Working with Alicia is an honour and a pleasure."

Mavado kicks off Japanese Tour

mavado-movado-flexxx-japan-tour.jpg

Mavado's quest for global domination is currently rolling through Japan, for his first-ever appearance in the Far East. After a phenomenal year that has seen him tour the UK, Europe, the Caribbean and the US, as well as appearing on BET's Rip the Runway and HOT 97's SUMMER JAM amongst a long list of accomplishments, Mavado's astonishing 4 year reign at the pinnacle of Dancehall shows no sign of easing. Just like the medal-winning athletes in Berlin, Mavado is carrying the flag for Jamaica globally.

After spending the day doing Japanese press, the 2009 Reggae Breeze Tour got off to a good start at Club Cita in Kawasaki last night as Mavado thrilled the audience with his catalogue of hits. An energy-packed show left everyone in attendance grinning from ear to ear as Mavado was called back for several encores. During his performance Mavado introduced Gully Squad members Flexxx and Chase Cross who both received a rapturous welcome from the Japanese crowd.

The tour moves on to Nagoya for a beach festival Saturday night, before moving on to the Kyushu Music Festival on Sunday.

After 4 jam-packed shows in the UK, that also featured Serani, Bugle, Chase Cross and Alliance selector Boom Boom, Mavado moved on to his first-ever European Tour last week Monday.

Visiting 6 countries for 9 shows in 10 days across the continent, Mavado has been met with nothing but love, underlining the international appeal of his music and message.

"The response everywhere we've been has been mad," said Mavado. "Paris was the first show and it was crazy, the venue was packed and the crowd sang every word. It set the tone for the rest of the tour which has just been more of the same."

Mavado aka Gully god in the UK

mavado-performing-fans-audience-uk1.jpg

Dancehall megastar Mavado kicked off his UK/European Tour in fine style last night at Club Isis in Nottingham, causing pandemonium with the many females in attendance, who spent most of his performance trying to drag him off stage.

The packed club was the first of 4 shows on the "Brighter Days" UK tour, with Bristol, Bradford and London finishing off the UK leg on Sunday night. Alliance stablemate Serani and Bugle are also on the UK tour. The Anger Management Band is the backing band for the London show, with Alliance selector Boom Boom also in the travel party.

Monday sees Mavado jetting off to Paris for his first-ever live shows in Europe, which will see the Gully god blaze a trail through France, Holland, Germany, Switzerland and Belgium.
"It's my third time in the UK and every time it gets bigger and better," says Mavado. "I will be performing in many new cities and countries on this tour which is exciting and I am looking forward to going to Europe to spread my music and represent Jamaica."

Big fans of each other's music, the link was made by Mavado's management and resulted in Bobby inviting Mavado to jump on the remix for his "Hands on Me" single.
In turn, Bobby has also sung on Mavado's ladies anthem "Never Believe You," which will drop in time for Summer.

Atlanta native Bobby Valentino's last single "Beep" was a certified smash and he has also been enjoying huge airplay with the hook on Lil Wayne's platinum monster "Mrs. Officer."

BREAKING NEWS: Mavado's So Special For 106 & Park!!!!

Behind The Scenes
mavado_behind-scenes_video.jpgBET have reversed their last minute decision to pull the airing of Mavado's "So Special" video from its flagship 106 & Park show, and have now confirmed they will be airing the video as "New Joint of the Week" this coming Tuesday, March 3rd.

"In some ways the timing worked out even better!" said manager Julian Jones-Griffith. "Mavado's album Mr Brooks - A Better Tomorrow is released on March 3rd, the same day the video will air, so hopefully it will give it that extra push."

BET's decision to pull the So Special video after advertising it's airing irked fans around the world, many of whom skipped work early and cancelled appointments to tune into the show, only to be disappointed.

After much back and forth and re-editing the video has now been accepted by the top brass at BET and passed for inclusion in Tuesday's 106 & Park.

Mavado made a show-stealing performance at BET's Rip the Runway, which also airs this Monday at 9pm.

Mavado on Thisis50.com & MTV

mavad0_and_sway_mtv_host_photos.jpg

Jamaican superstar Mavado is being heralded as the savior of Dancehall, very ironic after years of vilification in the media, but it’s easy to see why. Currently breaking barriers for Dancehall music, Mavado is firmly entrenching himself in the fabric of US popular culture. Another round of promotion in New York saw Mavado make an appearance at the MTV studios in Times Square, where he recorded an in-depth interview with Rahman Dukes for the station's flagship MTV News slot.

From there it was on to the G Unit offices, to record an interview for 50 Cent's wildly popular entertainment website www.thisis50.com. The videotaped interview will go up on Sunday on thisis50.com and will run the whole of next week, coinciding with the March 3rd release of Mavado's sophomore album "Mr Brooks - A Better Tomorrow."

MAVADO CREATES MORE HISTORY

With the release of his sophomore album Mr Brooks - A Better Tomorrow, on digital format via iTunes exclusively a week prior to the physical CD release, Mavado has once again broke new ground for Dancehall. Since iTune's inception almost 6 years ago, Bob Marley's timeless "Legend" album, voted the album of the 20th century, has been the #1 selling album on the Reggae section of iTunes. Today that changed for the first time ever, as Mavado took the top spot with his "Mr Brooks" album, released yesterday.

BET did not premier Mavado’s So Special video - censorship

mavado_so_special_video_photos.jpgWe were as surprised as everyone at BET's decision not to follow through on their promise to premier the "So Special" video on yesterday's 106 & Park. Despite 106 & Park's presenters hyping the premier for several days, including showing clips from the video, a last minute intervention by someone in the legal department prevented the video from airing.

"The anticipation was very high for the BET premier," said Mavado's management team. "We weren't notified until late in the day that there was a last minute objection by one of the legals over there, who had a censorship issue. He objected to "excessive display of alcohol" and "careless use of women as writhing set dressings!" The video is now available to watch online so people can make up their own minds about that."

Mavado's management went on to say that when the video was first submitted to BET they flagged several issues and were sent 3 different edits before approval.

"The show's programmer had passed the video and had been running promos so she was livid at the decision," he continued. "It’s disappointing but all is not lost. If anything this may help publicise the video even more - Mavado can't seem to step without some form of controversy!"
