Soulja Boy, Mavado & Serani Had A Heroes Weekend - Montego Bay

serani-obamagirl.jpgWeekend gone was Heroes Weekend in Jamaica and some of the Alliance "giants" were out in full force representing the current generation of Jamaican Heroes.

Serani, debut album No Games dropping next Tuesday the 27th, was the special guest at a special media all-weekend event organised by Jet Blue. The airline had invited 150 media, bloggers and tastemakers on a "Jet Blue Mystery Tour," where by the invitees turn up at the airport unaware of their destination until the last minute. All guests were put up at the luxurious Iberostar Grand Hotel in Rosehall, Montego Bay, and the Jamaican city that Jet Blue has just started to fly to.

Guests were treated to a five star weekend, culminating at an All-White party on the Sandals Cay Island off the Mobay coastline, with Serani as the surprise guest. About a minute into his performance, a rainstorm blasted the island but Serani used it to his advantage, jumped into the crowd, and had everyone doing the "call down the rain" dance. The vibes were unforgettable and were only stopped because the rain damaged the mic and he could sing no more, but his performance won him many fans and will certainly garner him great media coverage for his album release on October 27.

Tribute to Famed Caribbean Author & Playwright Trevor Rhone

TrevorRhone.jpgNew York, NY (Ms. RAINE INC): Trevor Rhone will go down in history as one of the driving forces behind pop-culture fascination with Jamaican music and language. As a co-writer of the groundbreaking 1972 film The Harder They Come, he introduced the American mainstream to the real Jamaica--focusing on the everyday lives of ordinary Jamaicans in their native language, and creating a platform to internationally showcase a then unknown sound called Reggae. The renowned playwright, author, actor and director, whose legendary works also include the book "Old Time Story," the play Two Can Play, and the screen gems Smile Orange and One Love, passed away on September 15th at the age of 69.

The Caribbean Cultural Theatre, and a host of other Caribbean-American cultural partners, under the patronage of the Honorable Geneive Brown Metzger, Consul General of Jamaica, New York, will be hosting a Tribute & Remembrance for the Life and Work of Playwright and Filmmaker Trevor D. Rhone, CD on Saturday, September 26th at St. Francis College-Founders Hall. The long anticipated finale of the sixth season finally arrived last Friday. After months of auditions, performances, and numerous memorable experiences, the 2009 Digicel Rising Stars Journey has finally come to its end as Jamaica picked the best from the west.

The night, which started at 8:30pm at the Courtleigh Auditorium, had Yendi onstage for the last time this season. After announcing the season's judges, Nadine Sutherland, Anthony Miller and Clyde Mckenzie, she went to Kiki who took the Chill Room to the Mas Camp stage. Kiki kept the Mas Camp crowd hyped up as they all watched the elimination show on the big screen.

The Denham Town Princess, 2008 Digicel Rising Star, Cameal Davis, opened the show with her widely popular, inspirational Believe. As the audience sat still in eager anticipation, some still in disbelief that the show had really come to its end, the judges did their round up of the season.

Usain Bolt the fastest man on earth has forced American legend Michael Johnson's statement back down his throat after he stated that "Usain Bolt will not break his 200 metres world record later on Thursday (Today), he told Pirate Irwin (AFP).

Bolt who has already set a world record earlier this week in the 100 metres final added one record to his tally after he made a magnificent run to win gold in the 200 metres at the World Athletics Championship in a world record time of 19.19 seconds.

Johnson told AFP, "His exertions this week have taken a lot out of him," said Johnson, whose 200m world record was broken by Bolt in Beijing last year in the Olympic final when the Jamaican ran 19.30sec.

"He's also been very busy and he looks tired. It is certainly less possible than it was a few nights ago. Also he has said that his training this year hasn't been as good as last year."

Track & Field over Gully and Gaza

Shelly-Ann Fraser Wins Gold For Jamaica - Kerron Stewart (Silver) - Berlin 2009 Women 100 metres Final IAAF World Championship

OutAroad.com has decided to remove two stories from the website titled Vybz Kartel & Beenie Man Got Booed Pon Di Gaza? - Champions in Action and Boos Were Aimed At Beenie Man While Performing With Kartel because of the difference in reports we have received from various contributors that are aligned with Gully and Gaza. OutAroad.com does not wish to be classed as a Gaza or Gully website like many others. Let us now turn our attention on the many records that our Track Field stars are creating in Berlin.

When Bolt created history last year in Beijing, commenters flooded the board with comments. However, this time around there are barely any comments.

OutAroad.com wishes to use this moment to say sorry for the confusion - it's time for all the Gully and Gaza fans to unite and celebrate the victory of our track and field stars.

Dancehall Coming of Age - Reggae Sumfest

For the first time in a long time, I felt I was at a world-class festival.

By Dennis Howard

sumfest-2009-reggae-photos-busy-signal.jpg

Dancehall Night at Reggae Sumfest was special in many ways, firstly it shows the strength of the young people in Jamaica who are still hungry for the popular sound. Secondly, there was hardly any hype about impending clashes or confrontations amongst the deejays and sing-jays who were billed for the event. Nor was there any expectation of any fire burning and gay bashing from any of the usual suspects. Yet despite the usual marketing gimmicks, the turnout was phenomenal. What was significant for me was the effort from the likes of Bounty Killer, Vybz Kartel, Movado, Kip Rich, Spice and others to create a show for presentation.

Bounty Killer Movado and Vybz Kartel in particular went out of their way to present an act, something that has been lacking in their presentation in the past. The fact that it worked to varying degree for the above-mentioned performers is insignificant. The real story is that dancehall artists are becoming real professionals on stage. It is really heartening to see the effort being made to entertain instead of looking for quick forwards and creating spurts of excitement, as we are used to in dancehall. There was no importation of whole communities armed with fireworks and the dangerous aerosol torches to manufacture crowd response. It seems the recession has caught up with our entertainers. For the first time in a long time, I felt I was at a world-class festival.

Congratulations to all the performers on Dancehall Night, they kept it reasonably clean did not resort to cheap tricks and delivered some great performances, some weak, some boring but all with a professional approach. This is a turning point in popular entertainment that must be recognized and encouraged. The fact that there were so many contenders for the top performer of the night is an indication of the significance of the change in approach by the artists.

Carolyn Yapp is Miss Jamaica Universe 2009

Carolyn-Yapp-Miss-Jamaica-Universe-2009.jpgCarolyn Yapp, a stunning 25 year old Interior Designer was recently crowned Miss Jamaica Universe 2009 to loud cheers and prolonged applause from the small audience in attendance at The Refuge at Villa Ronai. The coronation was a private affair, attended by the family and friends of the contestants, as well as producers and organizers from Pulse, licensees for the Jamaica preliminary to Miss Universe. Judges were well known fashion and beauty personalities Barry Moncrieffe, former principal dancer of the NDTC and fashion designer; Gilou Bauer, Curator of the Mutual Life Gallery and Lois Lake-Sherwood, artist, business executive and diplomat. The winner was the universal choice of all the judges.

First runner-up was Fallon Harris a 21 year old student at the University of the West Indies and fashion model. Third runner-up was budding model, singer and designer, 19 year old Krystina Black. Pulse made a special appeal to Jamaicans to come forward to compete for the title, despite giving up the license earlier this year, as the Miss Universe Organization prevailed on the Jamaican company to conduct a contest and produce a Miss Universe entrant from Jamaica. This year is considered especially important for Caribbeans, as the event will be held at Atlantis in the Bahamas, next door to Jamaica. This might be a year in which Jamaica has its best chance, given the event's presence in the region and the potential of the stunningly beautiful Miss Yapp.

'Redemption of Paradise' to hit big screens Summer - Starring Macka Diamond

'Redemption Of Paradise' - a high impact action drama Caribbean movie to hit the big screens this summer.

redemtion-paradise-macka-diamond.jpg

Director Noel 'Doc' Howell's latest movie 'Redemption Of Paradise' promises to be an exciting thriller to hit the big screens across the Caribbean this summer.

'Redemption Of Paradise' is a movie about vigilante justice set in the beautiful island of Paradise. What was once a safe and pleasurable island has now become plagued with violence, drugs, and gangs. Tired of the corruption that has infested her hometown, one citizen decides to take a stand. Millie (played by dancehall star Macka Diamond) forms a community watch group, which amongst other things encourages the local businessmen to stop paying protection money and to deter the corrupt efforts of Paradise's drug kingpin. The subplot to the movie involves a much younger Millie and a horrible twist to the story begins to unravel.

The Antiguan film, produced by Dr. Howell's film company Colour Bars Film Production, was filmed mainly in Antigua featuring stars from across the Caribbean.

Flying in an international crew to orchestrate stunts, from car chases and explosions, to cinematography as well, the team is now getting ready to premier the movie in Jamaica next month, and Dr. Howell is extremely proud of his latest production, confident that movie goers will love every minute of it.

Vybz Kartel & Spice hit the Billboard with Ramping Shop

By Krazy Katty
OutAroad.com Writer

This moment of history will go down as Vybz Kartel & Spice's first time getting a Billboard hit.

vybzkartel_spice_rampingshop_photos_video.jpg

The talented and lyrical genius Vybz Kartel & Spice have now joined the league of other dancehall artistes who have graced the Billboard charts for this year such as Elephant Man, Mavado and Serani.

Vybz Kartel's Ramping Shop in collaboration with Spice makes its debut at #96 on the Billboard R & B/Hip Hop charts.

According to an industry insider, the single should have hit the Billboard months ago only if the deejay wouldn't have legal issues with Ne-yo - especially now that it's a hot commodity on several main stream radio stations such as HOT 97 and Power 105.1.

In the past, Vybz Kartel has done much collaboration with mainstream artistes such as Jay Z, Pharrell, Kardinal Offishall, Missy Elliott, and Jim Jones none of which did not debut on the Billboard.

mizchif-clothing-newyork.jpgIn 2007 Brooklyn received exactly what they have been waiting for, with a name that’s curious and a logo that bites, this power couple was destined to battle street wear and Chic Couture pieces.

Jamaican born Jerome White and wife Deneisha Latoya put their fashion cutting edge together and opened Mizchif NY. The "Lady and The Beast" ambiance fills the boutique reminding the shopper of the "edgy" Street Wear and the Chic Couture Woman.

There mission is to produce a men's street wear line grasping the attention of the edgy, non baggy yet stylish gentleman and capture the eye of the woman with the unique couture line from Deneisha Latoya. The two lines together are captivating in this spacious vintage boutique.

Deneisha Latoya and Jerome launched Muse by DLW in 2004 which carried their signature pieces, but realized a clothing line with Deneisha's own name would best express their creative thinking and passion for the line. You can find Deneisha Latoya and Mizchif pieces in Mizchif Boutique Brooklyn, New York. Together they have produced contemporary suits, dresses, totes and bathing suits, which are featured in boutiques across the globe.

Vybz Kartel, Mavado, Beenie Man - Who Is The Man For Summer?

By Krazy Katty
OutAroad.com Writer

beenieman_mavado_vybzkartel.jpg

In this competitive dancehall industry it's all about being the Man of The Season such as who's the hottest at the beginning of the year, summer and then during the Christmas season for the biggest one night show on earth Sting.

In the first quarter of 2009 it was a close call between Vybz Kartel and Mavado who erased the usual thoughts of Beenie Man and Bounty Killer being the two top deejays for over 14 years. It was the first time in history at Sting fans witnessed a singer going up against a deejay.

Now it's Summer the hottest time of the year and also the perfect time for partying especially at ATI and RTI (Dream Weekend) four days, three nights of raving on the Negril Hip-Strip. These two events also help to indicate which artistes are the hottest going into the summer. During this season, who-so-ever are the hottest will be the ones doing all the radio jingles and advertisements for these parties. So far, the summer spotlight is mostly focused on Gully & Gaza. Mavado & Vybz Kartel have been the ones chosen to sell these parties by using their current hit singles creatively for which they voiced some sick adverts that will be used to promote these hot summer events. The songs that were converted for advertisements by Vybz Kartel are "Kartel Come Breed Me", which is now Dream Weekend Completely - Dallaz, now singing RedStripe Dream Weekend and Virginity as a jingle.

BOOMSHOTS: Ziggy Marley Responds to Buju Banton

Bob Marley's firstborn son speaks out in defense of his father
ziggymarley-buju-banton.jpg
Earlier this week, Grammy Award-winning recording artist Ziggy Marley stopped by VIBE’s New York City offices to talk about his latest release, Family Time (Tuff Gong / Universal), as well as a new album of his father’s classic songs, many of them remixed for young listeners, called B is For Bob (Tuff Gong / Universal). At the end of the video interview, Bob Marley’s firstborn son shared his views on a controversy that has engulfed Jamaica for the past two and a half weeks.

On April 22, the veteran reggae star Buju Banton- who has been nominated for three Grammys himself - was speaking at the University of the West Indies in Kingston, Jamaica, about his latest release, Rasta Got Soul (Gargamel Music). Banton spoke at length about his own distinguished career, but one of his remarks resonated louder than the others.

"You know they say that the greatest musician in Jamaica is Bob Marley," Buju told the crowded room. "I don't believe that because we have greater musicians to come. Bob was the most promoted, and well promoted, and we have to appreciate that because it's our culture. But don't kill our culture… Enough is enough."

Jamaican Designer Carlton Brown Fall 2009 at LG Fashion Week (Or, Hot Men in Suits)

carlton_brown_fashion_jamaican_lg_fall_2009_20.jpg
Carlton Brown brought his award winning Jamaican swagger to LG Fashion Week. He's one of the Caribbean's biggest designers and this was his North American debut. It was a really fun show and a crowd-pleaser. Did I mention that Carlton Brown does menswear? That would explain the reaction: hot men in cool clothing.

The soundtrack got people started. Some well know reggae tunes belted out that got many dancing in their seats. I was definitely one of them wanting to get up and bust out some winding on the runway. I was even dared to do it. There was so much positive energy in the crowd you couldn't help but smile and get into it.

Of course many women and gay men in the audience were drooling over the models. There was a collective yell when one model strutted out topless. After the fact I was reading Derick Chetty's tweets about the show and he mentioned a woman that had gotten on the ground to take pictures when the topless model came out. She was singing along too. I wish I got to see that.

The clothing wasn't your typical North American suits; it definitely had an island flavour with the bright colour combinations. More men should wear purple. One model walked down the runway with a veil over his head. After seeing this done to women so many times before in shows (Hello Margiela) I was glad to see the tables turned. There were a lot of three piece suits and some casual wear. There were one sided and bolero style jackets that were fashion forward but a little gimmicky. I also felt the pant lengths were a little on the short side.

D’Angel & Delus speak about the Broadcasting Commission’s "Daggering" actions

By Krazy Katty
OutAroad.com Writer

d%27angel-delus-daggering-songs-artists-dangel.jpg

The Jamaica Broadcasting Commission recently instructed all Radio, TV Stations and Cable Operators to remove all songs that have beeping/bleeping and those that associate with the word Daggering. However, most industry insiders are not totally against the Broadcasting Commission decision, but would prefer if the Commission had given a deadline as to when these songs should be removed.

Outaroad.com caught up with D’Angel at the gym who seems to be getting ready to march against the Broadcasting Commission’s drastic decision with fellow artists, producers and other key players in the music industry.”I am not known for using explicit lyrics in my songs, but on the same note I am a part of the culture so whatever is imposed on the music industry, obviously will affects me too."

The ‘Stronger’ hit maker D’Angel also argued that the instant banning of daggering/edited songs is not the way to solved the problem. “The Commission could have handled the situation better I am not against their decision of ridding the airwaves of these songs, but they should have given an extension which would have given the radio jocks and the TV stations more time to embraced the ban.”

Apart from the banning of songs, D’Angel believes it’s time for her fellow entertainers to take a new root in the way they write their songs. “If the Broadcasting Commission does not lift the ban, this will definitely force us to be even more creative with the outcome of our lyrical contents.”

Jamaica’s newest sensation Delus who’s known for his Gangsta Remix with Mavado ft Vybz Kartel and his recent hit single True Love also shares a similar outlook as D’Angel. “I know it’s right for us to protect our children from airing these songs but at the same time the Broadcasting Commission should have given a deadline.”

Elephant Man gone gospel - 'Alli Luya'

By Di Reviewer
OutAroad.com Writer

elephant_man_reggae_dancehall_jamaica_gospel_video.jpgHas Elephant Man gone gospel?- That would be the first question on your mind after listening to Elephant Man’s latest effort ‘Alli luya’. The song, produced by his personal engineer, Chester is Elephant’s way of ‘blessing’ the start of a new year, taking a small break from being the king of dancing songs.

The song is a fun, fast paced tune and Ele is his usual energetic self. It’s one of those songs that you can’t help moving to and a few seconds after hearing it you will defiantly find that you are humming the chorus.

Elephant Man never fails to pleases his fans with his diversity and versatility. He keeps his flavor new and has constantly redesigned him self as an artist to meet the demands of an ever changing dancehall scene. This song, although similar to ‘Yuh Too Badmind’ done some years ago, will undoubtedly make a huge impact. Like all of the ‘energy god’s’ dancing anthems - ‘da one ya sell’ off!

Chester’s Projects

Chester, the mastermind behind Busy Signal’s street anthem ‘Thug Bleach a Night’ and the Night Creature that features rivalry songs from Munga’s Sting Mouth Vs Deva Bratt’s Quarrel & Cuss. Chester’s latest dancehall juggling tiled Troop features artists like Konshens, D’Angel, Munga, Aishia to name a few.

Mavado Makes Vibe Magazine's Top 80 Songs List

mavado_war_clash_i_am_so_special_jamaica.jpgDancehall superstar Mavado continues to win accolades the world over. VIBE magazine has included his current Billboard smash "I'm So Special" in their Top 80 Songs of 2008. VIBE magazine will also be sending one of their top writers Rob Kenner along with a photographer to Jamaica this week to do an in-depth feature on Mavado for their April issue. This will be another first for Mavado, as Reggae and Dancehall stars are usually restricted to inches in Kenner's famed Boom Shots column, but Mavado will be getting a 4-page spread of his own.

EXCERPT FROM VIBE:

44 “SO SPECIAL”
Mavado
PRODUCED BY TJ
From Unfinished Business (riddim)

Dancehall’s “Gangster For Life” has been everywhere this year, from Grand Theft Auto IV to collabos with Jay-Z and G Unit. Just in case you were wondering why, he breaks it down over a reprise of Dave Kelly’s “Showtime” riddim. “I’m so special,” he points out. “That’s why me strapped with a .45 special.”

Young Artists to ‘run’ 09 - Delus & Konshens - Part 5 of 5

Konshens & Delus also known as the duo Sojah

By Teflon Thug
OutAroad.com Writer

delus_konshens_conscience_konshence_sojah.jpg

Delus' Gang War & True Love Freestyle Medley
delus_video_gang_war_true_love.jpgDelus has been on a steady rise since he perused his solo career. His song ‘Informers’ gained a lot of attention in Jamaica and Europe. ‘Gang War’ debuted on the UK Urban Music Charts and was featured on the D&H produced ‘Gangsta’ remix featuring Vybz Kartel and Mavado which tore up France and was featured on numerous mix tapes including a remixed version featuring G-Unit’s Lloyd Banks appearing on Shadyvill’s Caribbean mix.. His remix of T.I.’s ‘Whatever You Like’ has also made many mixtapes and even made it onto the playlists of several mainstream and local radio stations such as Chris Goldfinger & Tim Westwood show on BBC 1xtra, Danny Pepperseed, Busy 103 in Connecticut and several other European radio stations. On the local scene the song was played on ZIP 103 Fm by ZJ Elektra, ZJ Liquid and DJ Neil from Hot 102 FM. Delus is fast becoming an underground star and 2009 is his year to bridge the gap and break into mainstream dancehall. Look out because Delus is hear to claim his place.

Koshens' This Means Money (Hand Middle A Scratch Mi) Video
konshens_this_means_money_video.jpgKonshens started 2008 as a winner with his mega hit single ‘Winner’, which sneaked into the hearts of dancehall lovers. However, after being a winner it’s a fact that “Mi Hand Middle a Scratch Mi”. Before the release of ‘Hand Middle’- Konshens released several other hit songs such as ‘Rasta Imposter’, ‘Don’t Waste Yuh Talent’, ‘Tek Yuh Likkle Piece’ and the hardcore joint ‘Mi Have Mi Tings’. But, even with a collection of well received songs he failed to make an impact at Sting due to the fact that he didn’t got the chance to rehearse with the band because of an overseas engagement in Europe. He ended the year surrounded in controversy with his Natural Bridge management team accompanied by a lot of bad press. His fans are now looking to see if he will be able to mend his career during the course of this year and regain the momentum that ‘Winner gained him’.

With all the predictions made, the Dancehall is an ever-changing industry that can deal some devastating blows to an artist career. Only time will tell as to which one of these young talents will rise to the occasion and ‘run’ 09.

D&H The Remix Godz taking over - It's No Secret

By Di Reviewer

Mixtape: D&H The Remix Godz
Hosted by Sojah (Konshenc & Delus)
Origin: France

D%26H%20Remix%20-%20The%20Remix%20Godz%20-%202008_delus_konshens.gifFrench duo Daddy & Hypa’s (D&H) latest mix-tape, ‘The Remix Godz’ is a refreshing departure from what has become the norm within that field. The duo have uncompromisingly remixed songs on hip-hop, dancehall and reggae beats without dropping the tempo once throughout the entire mix, it is energy filled from start to finish.

Hosts Konshens and Delus keep the tracks bouncing with a steady influx of dub plates. Delus’ ‘Gangsta Remix’, which has become an underground hit and Konshens’ ‘Winner Remix’ adds flavor to the mix. Konshens and Delus who's also known has the duo Sojah - introduction track is ‘crazy’, with Delus certifying his stamp of approval for D&H’s remixing capabilities: ‘dem remix any mada f**king beat… remix u body parts an put u hands were u had ur feet’.

While the cd has tracks from dancehall heavy weights Elephant Man, Beenie Man, Vybz Kartel, Mavado, Mr Vegas and Bounty Killer, D&H make room for upcoming artists such as female singer Misselie and Dj Chukki Starr who represent themselves well.

D&H’s ‘Remix Godz’ has raised the bar significantly in the remix game and it will force others to put out their best. With this release, they can justly call them self ‘the remix godz’.

Young Artists to ‘run’ 09 - I-Octane, Bramma, Wasp & Jah Vinci - Part 4 of 5

By Teflon Thug
OutAroad.com Writer

i-octane_wasp_bramma_jah-vinci_artistes_dancehall.jpg

I-Octane's Different Page Video
i-octane_video_different_page.jpgI- Octane

Reggae singer I-Octane has been on a steady rise for some time now, but has stepped up the pace during the course of last year. He first gained a lot of national attention becoming a hit in the dancehall with ‘Gun Rise’ in collaboration with Teflon. His vocals are unmistakable and his lyrics are deep and very intellectual. His career rides off the strength of some solid hits such as ‘Run Yet’, ‘Poverty’ and ‘Stab Vampire’. His more recent song with Spragga Benz reminds us that he can easily touch base with the hardcore dancehall audience. There are many potential European tours in store for this artist if he continues with the momentum that he has started.

Bramma's Value of a Lady Video
bramma_value_of_a_lady_video.jpgOthers to look out for

Other upcoming stars that have shown they have the potential to shine in 09 are Bramma, Wasp and Jah Vinci.

Bramma has been creating a lot of buzz with his budding hit single ‘Guided By The Master’ a BigShip production. Another outstanding single from Bramma in 2008 was ‘Value of a Lady’ receiving heavy rotation on local radio stations and climbed into the top ten of several video countdown charts.

Wasp's Step To Dem Video
wasp_video_step_to_dem.jpgWasp is definitely one to look out for - however he has not been able to bridge the gap between the mix-tape world and the mainstream market. He created quiet a stir with ‘All These Tings’ early on in 08 showing that he has the potential to produce dancehall anthems. His most recent songs were ‘Step To Dem’ and Make Her Sweat ft. Don Corleon - both tracks were produced by Don Corleon.

To be entirely fair Jah Vinci musical success began to manifest very late in 2008. Being the newest member of the Vybz Kartel-led Portmore Empire Jah Vinci has proven to Jamaica that he can be a real “Stinger” who has the ability to tear up a one-drop rhythms or a fast-paced dancehall beats effortlessly. ‘Weh Dem A Go’ a collaboration with Vybz Kartel was one of 08’ biggest hits. Unfortunately, the fans were not able to put a face to the name at Sting, which would have been a huge boost to his career.

Andrew & Wada Blood's 'Hustle Til Day That I Die' - Video
andrew_%26_wada_blood_video_hustle_die.jpgAndrew and Wada Blood

This young duo, sons of international reggae/dancehall legend Junior One Blood Reid, is kicking down the doors of the music industry with the viciousness of hungry lions. Their first hit ‘Hustle Til The Day That I Die’ was horribly underrated, even though it was one of the better songs on the rhythm. The Bloods have decided that they will not make the same mistake twice with their latest effort on the ‘Gallis’ Rhythm entitled ‘La la la’. The Duo literally murders the track with killer lyrics and flow. It’s obvious that these kids are ready to tear 09.

Pamputtae's Good Good - Video
pamputtae_video_good_good_jamaica.jpgPamputae

Many have come and tried, but have failed to get the type of love that Lady Saw has in the dancehall, until now. Pamputtae is one of the most loved new female dancehall acts. Her presence and style is unmistakable and her raunchy lyrics never fail to ignite a crowd. She did her thing at last years’ staging of Sting and earned herself a mighty encore the moment she spits lines from her hit single Good Good (‘Pat Yuh Pu#*@y’). She will carry the torch for all the females through 09 with the ease of a seasoned veteran.

Young Artists to ‘run’ 09 - Laden & Charly Black - Part II of 5

Laden's I'm Sorry Video
laden_video_iamsorry.jpgLaden

"What's going oooon - it's Ladennnn!!!. - Who would have guessed that this young man that failed to rise to the top of the Digicel’s Rising Stars competition, would rise to the top of the dancehall? Laden is creeping into the hearts of Jamaicans with the steady pace of a champion with his hit single ‘Time to Shine’ becoming an instant anthem throughout the island. This singjay has the melodies to captivate the mind that are complimented with his strong lyrical content and unique flow. He was also a hit among the tough Sting crowd for 2008. Laden who is a favorite among the radio jocks and selectors definitely has the potential to make it big on the international scene. Other songs to watch - ‘I’m Sorry’ and ‘Really Like You’.

Charly Black's Bubble Video
charly_black_video_photos_bubble.jpgCharly Black

Please don’t mistake this man for a ‘one hit wonder. Charly Black has been consistently following up the huge success of his hit ‘Nuff Love’ with bangers such as ‘Any Gal Caan Bubble’. This selector turned artist has been improving on his new found passion with his vocal clarity and lyrics sounding better and better on every song. His latest effort ‘If Mi Nuh Rich This Year, Next Year Naa Pass’ is a bankable hit with the potential to be the biggest hit for 2009 - look out for this artist because he is definitely hungry for success.

Young Artists to ‘run’ 09 - Blak Ryno & Chino - Part 1 of 5

black_ryno_rhino_chino_blak_photos.jpg

By Teflon Thug
OutAroad.com Writer

With the turning of any year, many questions become apparent in the music industry, namely - who will be the hottest artists for the coming year. The music industry, particularly the Jamaican dancehall scene is very competitive and difficult to maneuver due to the politics that is involved. It is much easier to predict the level of success that established artist like Beenie Man, Vybz Kartel and Mavado will enjoy but it ids much more interesting to see how young artists evolve and capture the spotlight or fade into oblivion like so many others before them. A few artist have been ‘doing their thing’ during 2008 and it is apparent that they have a lot to live up to in the coming year.

The list of artistes that OutAroad.com predicting to shine for 09 are Black Ryno, Laden, Delus, Konshens, Charly Black, Pamputtae, Andrew & Wada Blood, Chino, I-Octane, Bramma, Wasp and Jah Vinci. Each day OutAroad.com will feature two artistes from the list.

Blak Ryno's Sting Performance
blak_black_ryno_sting_2008.jpgBlack Ryno

‘See It Deh’, the phrase coined by this young member of the Vybz Kartel led Portmore Empire has become one of dancehall most promising acts over the past year. With his high-pitched voice, he spits unforgiving hardcore gangster lyrics on tracks with heat of an open flame. Ryno has an impressive catalog of hits for a young artist including the popular ‘Mek Di Paper’ and ‘Thug Anthem’ for the thugs and ‘Ben Ova’ for the females. He demonstrated later in the year that he could easily flow over the mellow Notnice produced Remand rhythm with the more recent ‘Real Stingga’. He ended the year with an impressive Sting performance, cementing in the minds of haters and lovers alike that he is ready to ‘run di place’.

Chino's 'Protected' FT. Steven
chino_video_protected.jpgChino

It’s not easy being the son of a legendary reggae singer, just ask the Marley sons. You have the impossible task of proving to the fans and critics that you are worthy to be in the music business and that you are not riding on the fame and success of your famous relative. Chino has faced this and is winning the battle without messing up his designer shades! He has had to write twice as potent, flow three times as hard on the tracks and be ten times as creative to find his own place in the dancehall scene, and create his own identity instead of being referred to as Freddy McGregor’s son. His latest efforts ‘Ruff It Up’ and ‘Protected’ show that he is hear to make good music and keep the Big Ship sailing.

What's next for dancehall?

By Kon-Vick
OutAroad.com Writer

mavado-clash-vybz-kartel-sting-2008-pics.jpg

The battle has been fought gallantly by both Vybz Kartel and Mavado on the popular yearly killing ground referred to as Sting Jam World. I am sure that with all that was said and done by the artists, the fans of both sides were thoroughly satisfied and in the greater scope of things - isn’t that the point? Sting has delivered the goods - the fans have seen two of Jamaica’s most formidable young talents go up against each other in an attempt to settle a some what drawn out lyrical battle.

Now that the dust has settled, the greatest question is -what is next for dancehall? The dancehall fraternity always has something that keeps it going, whether it was the two year feud between Mavado and Kartel, the long standing battle between the ‘Grung Gad’ Bounty Killa and Beenie Man or the little one or two week contrivances between other artists. There is always something to keep the fans tuned into the radio to hear the latest gossip or buying the weekly tabloids because let’s face it - controversy sells.

Personally, I have been a fan of dancehall music for as long as I can remember and I have enjoyed every bit of controversy it has had to offer. Usually the rivalries in the music industry bring out the best in artists because nobody wants to disappoint their faithful fans. Having said that, the clash between Mavado and Kartel represents something much deeper than just the two artists trying to prove who is better. It represents a turning point in both artist careers and also in the greater dancehall community.

Mavado & Cocoa Tea listed among The 39 most memorable pop music moments of 2008

By Krazy Katty
OutAroad.com Writer

cocoa_tea_mavado_movado_coco.jpgJamaica’s dancehall artiste Mavado and reggae singer Cocoa Tea were the only two Jamaicans who got recognition for contributing to The 39 most memorable pop music moments of 2008.

Mavado and Cocoa Tea were listed in the #19 most memorable moments of 2008, which highlights songs that were done to help boast Obama's victorious election campaign. According to the Los Angeles Times, Nas' "Black President" probably tops the list, followed by Jay-Z and Mary J. Blige, Common, Don Omar, Cocoa Tea, Mavado and scads more. But our personal favorite is the Lady Tigra's "First Black First Lady," a deeply funky and quite funny R&B retelling of the Obamas' courtship.

T-Pain, Akon, Kanye and Lil Wayne all shared the 1# moment for The year Auto-Tune blankets the world.
T-Pain was however given top honors for being the man to populate Auto-Tune into the mainstream market, a sound that helped to boast many songs to #1 on the Billboard and several other major charts around the world.

Alliance Builds Billboard Empire! - Mavado, Serani

MAVADO_serani_bike_male_artiste_sky.jpg

While the rest of Dancehall seems to be focusing on lyrical confrontation, Alliance members Serani and Mavado are scaling international heights.

With the hotshot debut (highest new entry) on the Billboard Hot 100 Hip Hop and R'n'B chart this week, Serani's "No Games" continues to show the promise of being Dancehall's next big crossover hit.

Mavado's anthemic "I'm So Special" has also re-entered the same chart, even higher, at # 53 while Serani's "No Games" seems to be following the same path standing firm in the #55 position. Both songs were produced by TJ (TJ Records) on the Unfinished Business riddim.

"This is what we've been working for," said Serani. "The song is locking the NE and the plan is to impact the song across the US and then the rest of the world." Having formed a new partnership with Phase One Communications, Serani and his manager Julian Jones-Griffith are confident that this is just the beginning. Julian has been in New York speaking to several major labels and a deal seems imminent.

Reggaelution Delivers - Buju Banton, Tarrus Riley, Etana & Rootz Underground

Buju Banton's prowess as a crowd pleaser is world renown and based on his performance it should be exciting to see the line-up the promoters of It's A Reggaelution put together for us next year.

Buju-Banton-etana-reggaelution-photos-from-jamaica.jpgThe early drizzle could not stop the host of patrons who descended on the Liguanae Club in New Kingston. Reggae fans have been waiting for a while to see It's A Reggaelution come to life. It's A Reggaelution was the first all inclusive with live performances to ever grace the shores of Jamaica and on Saturday December 6, 2008 patrons were not disappointed.

The night began with eclectic selections by Delano from Renaissance who masterfully had patrons swinging their hips and chanting to the lyrics of popular tunes from the eighties to the two thousands.

Renaissance was followed by reggae's newest sensation Rootz Underground fresh from their US tour. Rootz delivered a professional set belting out some of their more familiar hits intermingled with some of their lesser known tracks. Rootz filled It's A Reggaelution with vibes of revolution and Rastafari upliftment. Rootz Underground was well received by the large crowd at the Liguanae Club and were followed by the strong one Etana.

Konshens the newest member of Vybz Kartel-led Portmore Empire?

By Krazy Katty
OutAroad.com Writer

vybz_kartel_konshens_guyana_photos.jpgNow-a-days everyone seems to be asking the same question about Konshens. Is he a member of the Vybz Kartel-led Portmore Empire?

According to a source, “the other day both artistes were booked for a show in Guyana along with Spice, D’Angel and Erup. The way how di man dem flex with each other you would think Vybz Kartel a Konshens daddy”.

The source also mentioned that both Vybz and Konshens took many photos together as if it was a family reunion. OutAroad.com also understands that Konshens has posted these photos on his myspace page as well.

A couple of nights ago at the Sting’s launch Vybz Kartel said big up yuh self Konshens and Danny English. However, during a radio interview recently on ZIP FM, the interviewer asked Konshens, what are his thoughts of Vybz Kartel and Mavado and who will win the clash at Sting this year (2008)? Konshens then quickly replied, “Vybz Kartel will definitely win the clash”.

However, when OutAroad.com contacted Konshens it seems to be a not so synchronize story.
“Sherlock mi come from, only inna sports mi pick side, Kartel a di baddest lyricist in the history of dancehall and everybody know dat,….Mavado however, has one a di most powerful voices in dancehall. Both have my respect, but mi nuh pledge allegiance to none a dem, mi nuh Empire or Alliance, the only group I’m in is Sojah!

Pamputtae - Jamaica's hottest female artiste ready to set Sting on fire

By Shaneka Simpson.
OutAroad.com Writer

pamputtae_dancehall_sting_2009.bmpShe burst onto the scene with the hit single “Pat Yuh Pu**y” produced by her manager Hoffy for the Good Yute Label. The song had ladies doing just what she commanded in the dancehall, and she can be expected to exercise this control for a while longer with the recent release of the remix featuring international R&B singer Ashanti, which has been getting airplay in the mainstream. Now the only female to rise to prominence in the dancehall for 2008 is about to tread where only the brave have gone before. Pamputtae is set to grace the stage at Jamworld on December 26, 2008 for the 25th staging of Sting.

She has the lyrics and style which should guarantee her drawing her own crowd as well as getting the support of the other spectators, and if a clash ensues by any lady who feels threatened by this new artiste’s increasing popularity, she certainly does not lack the bravado to step up to the plate. Whether this actually occurs or proves to be only the wishful thinking of the writer, Pamputtae is expected to deliver a first-rate performance. With recent songs such as “F**k & Fight” produced by Seanizzle, “Ride It” on Mr. G’s Brawling Riddim and “Some Do Some Don’t” alongside Matterhorn on Boardhouse’s Clean Sweep Riddim, fans and patrons will not be disappointed.

jamaica_world_cup.jpgJamaica’s World Cup qualifying dream is still alive after defeating Honduras 1-0 last night at the National Stadium on Wednesday, October 15, 2008.

Jamaica’s 1-0 weekend victory over CONCACAF giant Mexico was enough confidence to lead the Reggae Boyz to another win, as Jamaica needs to win all their remaining matches in order to qualify for the next round.

Luton Shelton scored the winning goal for the Jamaicans in the 16th from a magnificent pass he received from midfield. He then beat the defender before rocketing the ball into the back of the Hondurans’ net.

Canada draws Mexico 2-2

Canada managed to pull off draw with Mexico playing at home.

Ali Gerba and Tomasz Radzinski scored for Canada but even though the night was a chilly 8 C, Matias Vuoso and Carlos Salcido replied for Mexico at Commonwealth Stadium.

Jamaica will now have to beat Canada in their November 19 encounter at the National Stadium.

Cameal Davies became the first female Digicel Rising Star Winner

cameal_davies_digicel_rising_star_winner_female_jamaica.jpgAgainst thunderous cheers and screams and with a mother running around in excitement at the Courtleigh Auditorium, Cameal Davies, hailing from the Kingston 14 community of Denham Town, emerged to create history as she snatched the well-chased 2008 Digicel Rising Star title.

Davies made history in the five year series to be the first female to win the Digicel Rising Stars Competition after past females contestants like Renee, Dianna Rutherford, Nickeisha Barnes, Lenya Wilks and Jodiann Pantry came close to walking away, but missed out to their male opponents. Davies however emerged with aggressive campaigning strategies and continuous improvements, leaving Kahlil in the dust, and take the cake in all three performances on Sunday, September 28, in what is described as a falter of Kahlil who, according to Judge Anthony, nabbed only the last performance which was "good but too late."

Just before the historic news, Nadine Sutherland told Cameal: "You are an example of what we can expect and what can come from young people, especially in the inner-city communities...Cameal you are an example especially to young females, you are a winner with grace, style and class."

Anthony offered that Jennifer Hudson's Spotlight was by far, the best song selection and performance in this season, while hinting: "You won't be winning tonight because you are a woman, but because you are the best contestant."

As the announcement of the winner came, many were not shocked, in fact many said they knew that The Denham Princess was going to win since it had many around Jamaica actively arguing about her improvements and her competition of five boys with five crowds.

Up Close And Personal With Zebra

As I entered the Princeville plaza and headed down to the studio, own by famed Dj Mister. G formerly known as Goofy. There around the mixing board in a seemingly creative manner was a familiar face I’ve longed seen. “Good afternoon empress” as he reached out with greetings,” brought back memories of an all too familiar yet unique voice and I was assured that the one and only ‘Zebra’ is back!

Gone are the days of the braided hair, dozens of cell phones lining his waist, while using one to call the other and a seemingly hyped persona. Gone however are not his usual comical suave as he routinely went in an out of character much to the amusement of everyone around.

“Now while all humor is appreciated, lets get down to business, Zebra let your voice be heard…….”

OutAroad.com - Sanya:
So how is Zebra doing?

Zebra
“Zebra as always; still mastering rhymes but on a higher meds, Knowin dem use to si me … hypness… mi a appear different.

OutAroad.com - Sanya:
So how does it feel to be out after being incarcerated for what ten years?

Zebra
“A 10 year di judge gi mi… well tru it wasn’t a fus offence. I get 9 months outa each year, so mi do bout seven”

OutAroad.com - Sanya:

When Shaggy took the stage at 1:30am Sunday morning he gave a stunning performance that raised the tempo of the 45,000 William Knibb crowd. The No Joke Entertainment produced Usain Bolt Homecoming celebrations fulfilled expectations beyond measure.

"The show was exquisite, we had high hopes but these were exceeded by the outpouring of support from the community of Sherwood Content and surrounding areas. The artistes turned out and so did the dancers and made the show a fitting tribute to Usain." - Mario Lazarre Jnr, CEO No Joke entertainment

The events associated with the Hart Hill Usain Bolt Homecoming began on Friday September 19 with Usain Bolt doing a series of interviews with the international media Including Bryant Gumbel, BET and Vibe Magazine. The celebrations continued on Saturday September 20 with a press conference at the lush Grand Bahia Principe Hotel. There was then a fun day at the Waldensia primary school hosted by Miss Jamaica 2007 Yendi Phillips. The fun day saw the children of Sherwood Content and surrounding communities being treated to rides and a kiddie park. Should 13-year-old girls become super models?

By Sanya Harrison
OutAroad.com Writer

caribbean_model_search_shermonique_ivy.jpg

Thirteen years old, Shermonique Ivy strutted her way down the runways at the Hilton Kingston Hotel, as it recently staged the annual Caribbean Model Search (CMS) Competition.

But when has it become the ‘norm’ to have little thirteen year-old girls parading themselves in front of mature audiences in scantily clad apparel?

Surely, it may be argued that it is a formal event not intended to have any sort of sexualized connotations. Tell that to a pedophile waiting to ogle at their prepubescent little frames strutting up and down the runway. Surely she may “act mature for her age” as quoted by a representative who answered the phone when the Pulse group was contacted. Therefore, I guess it is safe to assume it’s okay to rob our children of their innocence as long as we can cash in on their abilities. But, isn’t this robbing our little girls of their childhood? Picking the fruit too early? Or maybe our society bent on blighting our children’s future by deliberately imposing on them the responsibilities of
adulthood?

According to a statement, OutAroad.com received from Mr. Kingsley Cooper (Pulse CEO).

“Given the queries and concerns we have received about this, we'll certainly have a look at this again; to see if we remain convinced that it is appropriate to have a 13 year old enter the competition”.

Shermonique will not start modeling professionally until she completes high school (CXC level). This is standard for Pulse and has been the case with all our winners including such current stars as Gaye McDonald and Jaunel McKenzie who won at 14/15 and 16 respectively, but who did not start modeling internationally until after they had completed high school. In Gaye’s case, 2-3 years after she won, in Jaunel’s, the following year.

Will Munga and Aidonia take a piece of the Christmas hype?

By Krazy Katty
OutAroad.com Writer

munga_aidonia_idonia_rival_clash_sting_08.jpg

Dancehall artistes Munga also known as the Gangsta Ras and the lyrical genius Aidonia were two of the hottest artistes last year ripping up the airwaves and the dancehall circuits. However, in the first quarter of 2008 that hype slowly faded away.

One of the things that these two artistes have in common is that fans are anxiously waiting for them to make a monstrous come back. A lot of persons were anticipating that they would have been hot for the summer, but the summer hype went to the Energy god Elephant Man with his usual dancing antics with songs such as ‘Nuh Linga’, ‘Gully Creeper’ and ‘Sweep’. But what really placed the icing on the ‘summer hype cake’ for Elephant Man was when the world’s fastest man on earth Usain Bolt did the ‘Nuh Linga’ and ‘Gully Creeper’ after breaking his own world record at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing (China).

Even though both Munga and Aidonia were not at their uttermost best, they still had songs ripping up the dancehall. Munga with ‘Rise My Own’ and Adonia with ‘Want Fi F**k Yuh’. Personally, I think these two artistes will once again become hot commodities for this coming Christmas season as I have done a few rounds to various studios listening to tracks soon to be release by Munga and Aidonia. So far, Aidonia can be defined as the favourite of the two because most of Aidonia’s tracks that I heard are now out and creating a havoc in the dancehall. Songs such as ‘Bruise Up Di P*ssy Jaw’, and the overnight hit single ‘Daggering’ that quickly attached its self like glue to the ladies in its first week of rotation especially at RTI weekend, Negril. If Aidonia can continue on this same path or better, he will definitely be a contender for Sting 08.

Jamaican hit-maker Steven McGregor featured in the New York Times

Photo by Michael " Bigs" Burbridge

steven_mcgregor_producer_jamaica.jpgJamaica’s hit beat maker/producer Steven McGregor aka Di Genius was featured in the New York Times as one of their entertainment leads. You can read the interview below that was written by Vivien Goldman of www.nytimes.com.

THE new hit-making force in Jamaican music doesn’t live in the steamy downtown ghettos Bob Marley made famous but on a leafy residential road high on a hill here, in the upscale neighborhood Havendale, St. Andrews. Just 18, Stephen McGregor, also known as Di Genius, is a member of one of reggae’s reigning families: the clan of the veteran singer Freddie McGregor.

Big iron gates slowly swing open to reveal a yard with a raised, shaded area designed for playing dominoes. Inside a large villa narrow wooden stairs behind the living room lead up to Big Ship Studio, named after Freddie’s 1981 worldwide hit. With its richly colored walls hung with framed awards and its big black leather couch, Big Ship feels like a cozy clubhouse outfitted with huge speakers and a mixing desk. Here Stephen, who is known as the studio’s Captain, swivels around in an office chair, punctuating a chat by flicking a fader and unleashing yet another monster hit like Sean Paul’s “Watch Dem Roll” and “Always on My Mind,” his collaboration with Da’Ville.

Also in the room are Stephen’s brother Daniel, 25, a popular lyricist and rapper known professionally as Chino, and his sister Yeshemabeth (also known as Shema), 29, an up-and-coming singer. Stephen produces them both.

Shaggy: 'I'm still the man to beat'

shaggy_dancehallintoxication_artistes.jpg

Shaggy has claimed that he is still "the man to beat" when it comes to hit records.

The 'Boombastic' singer said no dancehall or reggae artist could match his record sales, which he claimed put him in the same category as Bob Marley.

"To survive 20 years and still be the man to beat is incredible," he told DS.

"A lot of people have come along since me, like Sean Paul, but no-one has sold the numbers I have and no-one has the No.1s I have. After all is said and done, I'm still the man to beat."

He added: "To have a diamond record (ten million album sales in the US) puts you in a category with Bob Marley.

"I was selling the numbers that Bob Marley sold... and I wasn't dead! But I still have time to do more."

Usain Bolt sets third world record as Jamaica win 4x100m

Rick Broadbent in Beijing
timesonline.co.uk

Usain Bolt added a third gold medal to his rapidly-expanding collection as a devastating third leg set up Jamaica's successful assault on the world 4x100 metres record.

The time of 37.10 seconds was stunning, taking three-tenths off the USA's mark, set 15 years ago yesterday, and underlined that these Games have seen a changing of the guard. Cynics would say that is only part down to Jamaica's ascent, with the demise of the USA also a significant factor. Certainly, defeats for the likes of Sanya Richards, Allyson Felix and Jeremy Wariner, albeit that he did lose to another American, mean the holy track trinity go home with their tails between their legs.

The USA's efforts to clean up the sport have certainly had an impact on performance, with Marion Jones in jail and Justin Gatlin banned. But Jamaica's rise has been astonishing, headed by Bolt's staggering feats and the first clean sweep in the women's 100 metres. The relay, with Nesta Carter, Michael Frater, Bolt and Asafa Powell, is the icing on the cake.

Trinidad & Tobago took the silver and Japan the bronze as Britain's title went to deserving recipients. Britain, of course, had departed the previous night when a botched changeover saw them disqualified.

Jamaica's Bolt breaks 200 mark, gets sprint double

Source: www.ap.google.com

usain_bolt_200_world_record_19.30_beijing_jamaica.jpg

BEIJING (AP) - Usain Bolt of Jamaica broke the world record by winning the 200 meters in 19.30 seconds Wednesday night, becoming the first man since Carl Lewis in 1984 to sweep the 100 and 200 gold medals at an Olympics.

Bolt is the first man ever to break the world marks in both sprints at an Olympics. Not even Lewis or Jesse Owens managed that.

Showing what he can do when he runs at full speed all the way through the finish - something he hadn't done yet in the Beijing Games - Bolt eclipsed the old record of 19.32 seconds set by Michael Johnson in Atlanta in 1996.

Walker wins women's 400-meter hurdles - Olympic Record

Melanie_Walker_beijing_400_record.jpgBEIJING (AP) - Melaine Walker of Jamaica has won the gold medal in the women's 400-meter hurdles in an Olympic record.

Walker won in 52.64 seconds in Wednesday's final, with Sheena Tosta of the United States taking silver in 53.70 and Tasha Danvers of Britain third in 53.84.

Walker's win came minutes after her countryman Usain Bolt completed a sprint double by winning the men's 200 in world-record time.

The hurdles final was wide open with world record-holder Yulia Pechonkina skipping the Olympics because of a heart problem, two-time world champion Jana Rawlinson out injured and reigning Olympic champion Fani Halkia expelled after testing positive for a steroid.

Usain Bolt's next task: Take down the 200 world record

By Philip Hersh | Tribune Olympic Bureau
Source: chicagotribune.com

usain_bolt_jamaica_beijing_worldrecord.jpgBEIJING - It sounds so simple.

The Big Man hambones the final 20 meters in Saturday's Olympic 100-meter final and still covers the distance in 9.69 seconds, breaking the world record he set earlier this season.

The Big Man began running the 100 only this year and has much more experience in -- and a greater passion for -- the 200.

So the Big Man will take down the record in the long sprint, the 19.32 that remains otherworldly 12 years after Michael Johnson set it in the 1996 Olympic final. No one has come within three-tenths of a second since.

After all, no less an expert than Johnson said two months ago, "I'm ready to kiss the record goodbye, if he keeps on doing what he has been doing.''

Jamaica's Usain Bolt has done more than that since getting Johnson's attention May 31 with his first 100 world record of 9.72 seconds. He has run the fifth fastest time ever in the 200, a 19.67, and the three leading 200 times of this season.

US protest of women's 100 final rejected

BEIJING (AP) - The U.S. track and field team's protest of the women's 100-meter final at the Olympics was rejected Sunday night.

The Americans asked that the race be reviewed because of a possible false start by Torri Edwards, one of the country's sprinters.

Edwards herself said she thought she false-started. She wound up finishing last as Shelly-Ann Fraser led a Jamaican sweep of medals in the dash.

Jamaican Fraser wins women's 100m gold medal

BEIJING--Shelly-Ann Fraser led the other two Jamaicans to win all the women's 100 meters medals on Sunday evening at the Beijing Olympic Games.

Fraser clocked her personal best in 10.78 seconds before Sherone Simpson and Kerron Stewart finished, both in 10.98, and shared the silver.

Simpson said, "We made history. Just like yesterday Bolt set a new world record. We are all great athletes and I'm very excited about the tremendous achievement we've made for our country."

"Today's victory boosts my confidence to win the 200m. We will also do well in the 4x100m. I believe we can beat the Americans," she said.

Commenting on Jamaica's medals sweep, Stewart said, "I don't know if I should cry, smile, jump. I think this is a fabulous thing for the three of us to win the medals and for Jamaica to get one, two, three. What else can you say?"

The Jamaican squad smashed the American fleet joined by Lauryn Williams, Muna Lee and Torri Edwards, who were hot candidates for the title before the Games.

The Jamaican women replayed the legend created by their countryman Usain Bolt on Saturday night on the same track in the Olympic main venue. Bolt sliced the men's 100m world record by three hundredths of a second to a stunning 9.69 seconds.

Jamaica's Bolt Wins Olympic 100 Meters in World Record Time

By Dan Baynes

Aug. 16 (Bloomberg) -- Usain Bolt won the Beijing Olympics 100 meters gold medal in a world-record 9.69 seconds, gesturing to the crowd and slapping his chest before crossing the line.

Bolt, a 200-meter specialist nicknamed "Lightning,'' finished 0.2 second ahead of Trinidad's Richard Thompson at the Bird's Nest stadium. Walter Dix of the U.S. took bronze in 9.91. Fellow Jamaican Asafa Powell was fifth, while Tyson Gay of the U.S. failed to qualify for the final of track's premier event.

The 21-year-old Bolt, who only took up the 100 meters as "speed work'' to prepare for his favored 200 meters, became the first Jamaican and second athlete from the Caribbean to win the 100-meter dash after Trinidad's Hasely Crawford in 1976.

Today's final had been billed as a showdown between the three fastest men in history.

Bolt held the previous world record of 9.72, having lowered Powell's mark of 9.74 in May. World champion Gay set a U.S.-best 9.77 at the U.S. trials, yet ran 10.05 in today's second semifinal and was edged out for fourth place by teammate Darvis Patton. Only the top four advanced.

The 6-foot-5 Bolt is the favorite to win the 200 meters gold medal in Beijing. Gay, the world champion at that distance, failed to qualify after straining his hamstring in a heat at last month's U.S. trials.

Should Dancehall Artistes Be Charged For Using Expletives on Stage?

bounty_killer_beenieman_vybzkartel_elephantman_mavado.jpg

Since the start of this year several artistes have faced the court for using expletives on stage during their performance. Most dancehall insiders think it’s insane to charge artistes for using expletives as dancehall events are adult shows and artistes should not be held responsible for patrons who bring kids at these events.

Mrs. Lynval, Age: 33
"I ‘m not a hundred percent with the idea of charging the artistes for using expletives on stage but sometimes I think they need to tone it down and try to find creative ways of expressing themselves".

Rodriquez Smith, 28 - vendor
"The government should look into the issue because these words that are not permitted to use in Jamaica on stage are frequently used curse words on shows overseas and no one gets charged. Words like b*mb*claat, r*ssclaat are made up words, I have no problem with those, but when they are going to use f**k, p*ssyh*le during there performance then they should be charged for using those words because that’s what you called international curse words".

Delroy Sharp Age: 33 - high school teacher
“I can understand where cursing has its place in the stage show environment as most of the time it serves as a means of expression and also ‘hypes’ up the crowd. As with anything else, I think there is an appropriate place and time, so it should not be done out of context of even focused on someone. At the end of the day adults should be able to enjoy themselves to the fullest in an adult environment".

Italy Crowns Tifa As The New Queen Of The Dancehall

tifa-europe.jpgDiva of the Dancehall, Latifa Brown a.k.a Tifa has set a blazing trail all across Europe. Over the last three weeks, this dancehall star has been touring across Europe, and has already had performances in Austria and Germany, with upcoming performances in Italy, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Switzerland and Berlin. Tifa and Ward 21 performed to over 4,000 to 5,000 screaming fans in Wuppertal, Germany who stayed in the pouring rain just to see these stars in action.

Leading up to Tifa's performance in Leece, Italy on the 10th of August, Tifa was featured on the cover of News Fever Magazine (Italian Publication), along with other great Jamaican acts and also received a full-page spread in which they crowned her as "La Nuova Regina Della Dancehall", which translates to "The New Queen of the Dancehall".

"I am not sure if I am deserving of that title as yet, but I am humbled and flattered that someone would think that of me", stated a noticeably excited Tifa when asked about her new title.

Since the Tour has begun, Tifa has already received numerous offers for future bookings, songs and album deals and is currently in negotiations to perform at a concert in Kenya in early December for over 66,000 patrons at the Kasarani Stadium.

Elephant Man & Konshens tempted fans at Temptation Live

By Krazy Katty
OutAroad.com Writer

Elephantman_temptationlive_negril.jpg

An overwhelming burst of energy ripped through the Jungle Nightclub, Negril this morning as the fast rising Konshens and the ‘Energy God’ himself, Elephant Man, turned the place upside down.

Konshens was in a no nonsense mood. He came onstage after an extended wait that saw Black Chiney unleashing some hard hitting songs. Their stint behind the turntables was well appreciated as they dropped some dub plates that awoken the sometimes sleepily crowd that has been partying all day long.

The momentum climbed suddenly after girl group MBC left the stage and Konshens was introduced. He came onstage singing the hit single Winner, before warming the crowd with his fairly young but effective music catalogue. For the song Clap It he asked for three females onstage, however it was not forthcoming as they though his ‘young artiste $10,000 reward’ was not enough. Konshens also did Rasta Imposter, Dance Down, Woman Ago Kill Mi, and capped off his high energy performance with a song for his mother that was well received by the audience.

Konshens Came, He Saw and He Conquered - Reggae Sumfest

By Krazy Katty
OutAroad.com Writer

konshenssumfest_chrisgoldfinger_bbc_reggae.jpg

Dancehall Giants such as Beenie Man, Vybz Kartel and Mavado all did tremendously well at Reggae Sumfest on Dancehall Night. But Natural Bridge Recording artiste Konshens stage entry will definitely be one to remember - in other words “one of a kind”.

“A which artiste dis a come on now,” a patron shouted. As the only thing the audience could see was a mini documentary that quickly displayed - how Jamaica’s newest sensation fought his way through the music industry to become ‘Di Winna’ he is today. A few sound tracks of the great Malcolm X voice were also inserted, warning “he’s to be respected as a human being in this society, on this earth, in this day which we intent to bring into existence by any means necessary”.

With such a mind blowing intro the audience was anxiously anticipating to get a taste of Konshens’ performance - he came, he saw and he conquered.

Konshens is one of the few artistes who burst onto the scene and made the heavyweight line up of artistes billed to perform on Reggae Sumfest Dancehall Night in such a short time.

The Singer/Deejay started off his short and influential performance with his mega hit single “This Year Mi Affi Bi Di Winna” which had the audience shouting out “because mi nah guh mi yard without my youth them dinner”.

Alliance vs. Portmore Empire - Hardcore Dancehall Divided?

By Kon-Vick
OutAroad.com Writer

bounty_killer_vybz_kartel_and_artistes.jpg

The cancellation of the Finish Line party because Mavado of the Alliance and Vybz Kartel of Portmore Empire were billed for the same show is a testimony of where dancehall is today.

An endemic has emerged into the genre - crews. The affiliation with either the Bounty Killer led Alliance or the Vybz Kartel led Portmore Empire is seen as the ultimate way to get recognition for some dancehall acts. Many upcoming artistes think it is necessary to be aligned with either of the two factions in order to get their songs playing on the radio or in the dances. They see it as an opportunity to grace the stage at events to display their talents.

However, the attachment is not always a bed of roses. This was evident when Einstein, who is an associate of the Alliance, was badly beaten by members of the Portmore Empire after he tried to take the microphone at a session in Portmore. Tensions also brewed when Aidonia left the company of the Alliance to join forces with the Empire.

Fans voted Mavado as Summer's Hottest Artiste

Whose summer is it - Part II

By Kon-Vick
OutAroad.com Writer

Mavado_summer_artiste_stageshow_photos.jpg

It is obvious that Mavado is special to his fans and maybe that is the reason he sang the song I’m So Special. The ‘Gangsta For Life’ has emerged on top of OutAroad.com ‘Summer Ruler’ poll. Mavado, who is the stronghold of the Alliance, copped more votes than the likes of Vybz Kartel and Beenie Man.

From a tally of over 200 votes received via our comments and email responses, Mavado walked away with 36% of the votes, while it was a tie between Beenie Man and Vybz Kartel who both got 31%. The remaining two per cent was split between Elephant Man, Assassin and Busy Signal and Aidonia who were not on the list.

Serani and Bugle did get a little love from our voters, but no one saw them as potential ‘Summer Rulers’. There was concern that Busy Signal was left off the list and several persons queried his absence. Surprisingly persons left comments saying Aidonia should have been on the list, however, we left him off because he is now lacking momentum on the airwaves.

Whose Summer is it? - Beenie, Kartel, Mavado, Elephant Man

By Kon-Vick
OutAroad.com Writer

beenieman_vybzkartel_mavado_elephantman_artistes_jamaican.jpg

Here at OutAroad.com we are trying to find out which dancehall artiste is going to ‘run’ the summer. We have decided that the best way to find out is to get you involved. Just leave a comment to let us know who you think will be ‘sizzling hot’ this summer. Below is a synopsis of some of the artistes on our list.

Last year almost everyone readily agreed that Munga Honourable was sizzling. The ‘Gangsta Ras’ had several smashing hits that cemented themselves onto the tongues of dancehall music lovers. However, Munga has lost that momentum and this year won’t be considered for the ‘pick of the summer list’.

On our list, we have the fiery Vybz Kartel, the intense Mavado, the blazing Beenie Man, the relentless Assassin, the energetic Elephant Man, and new comers Bugle and Serani (Daseca).

Vybz Kartel has been one of the most consistent dancehall acts in recent time and has a plethora of hardcore dancehall hits under his belt. For this summer, we can expect a lot from the former Alliance member as his palette just keeps growing with songs that appeal to his ever-growing fan base. Some of Kartel’s more vibrant songs going into the summer are: Fatta Than a Pound, My Scheme, Trailer Load of Money, Money Fi Spend, Tightest Punanny, and Broad Daylight.

Jamaica's reggae singer Terry Linen is in the 'Mood for Love'

By Kon-Vick
OutAroad.com Writer

terry_linen_reggaelyrics_male_singer.jpgLast week we promised that we would be reviewing Terry Linen’s 'No Time to Linger', however because of an overwhelming demand for his single 'Mood for Love' that is now holding the #2 position on Richie B's Top 20 Reggae Chart we have decided to review that single instead. The song is on the OutAroad.com Media Player for your listening ears.

It is in no uncertain terms that Linen, a talented singer that has been compared to Reggae great Garnett Silk, has announced his presence back onto the music scene. Terry Linen’s soothing voice singing Mood for Love has the potential to do just that, put you in the mood. The soft sentimental manner in which Linen delivers has the potential to send chill down one’s spine.

From the outset, Linen’s expressive voice drives a deep, emotional feeling into one’s sub consciousness. As the song matures so does this feeling. Mood for Love will leave you in awe, when you start to think that a talent like this exist and has not highlighted.

The song is based on a familiar theme: A man feeling extremely lonely and missing his woman. This loneliness is magnified when he reflects on the good times they shared. This moment of reminiscing then puts him in the Mood for Love.

Terry Linen Has 'No Time To Linger'

By Kon-Vick
OutAroad.com Writer

terry_linen_singer_male_jamaica.jpgAs promised, we will continue to give you, our readers, an insight into how Terry Linen started out his career and about his unique sound.

His peers in the cool setting of Red Bank, St. Elizabeth, deemed the OutAroad.com Break Out Artiste for the Month of June a calm character. An individual blessed with musical talent that only a few persons possesses naturally.

Linen’s silky voice has been compared to that of Reggae great, Garnett Silk. The pitch, which governs Linen’s melody and harmony while he delivers his soulful songs, is undoubtedly that of a good singer. And while the tag of a Garnett Silk sound alike lingers, Linen feels no way about it.

“Mi love Garnet Silk, and from the people say I sound like him I will not fight them down. I still believe I have a different tone and texture still, but I fell no way being compared to a Reggae great,” Terry Linen explained to OutAroad.com.

Terry Linen’s early days in the music were adventurous as the artiste was in constant demand for dub plates.

“From St. Elizabeth days I use to work with a man call Mr. Swaby, and then Black Kat came about and I began doing some dub plates first. Then Mr. Swaby carried me to Penthouse where we link up with Red Rose, and I did a song called Rainbow Never Touched the Ground”.

Negative Music, A Disc Jock Dilemma

“If a song is made for the streets leave it on the streets".

By Kon-Vick

liquid_elektra_colinhines_kurt_riley_radio_dj.jpg

Since recently the attacks on dancehall music has skyrocketed as many persons begin to aggressively criticize the negative nature of the music. Fingers are being pointed in all directions as influential individuals in society and corporate entities try to find someone or a group of individuals guilty for the ‘decline’ of the dancehall genre.

Many criticize dancehall acts from yester year, and chastise the current crap. However, many of those pointing fingers forget to identify the persons that actually make the music reach the mass. Argument is now emerging that disc jocks are often overlooked, while they are indeed some of the biggest culprits.

When OutAroad.com contacted ZJ Liquid from Zip 103 FM, he agreed that radio disc jocks should shoulder some of the blame for spreading negative dancehall music.

“Radio disc jocks contribute a little to the negativity of course, a small percentage, but we cannot be solely blamed. Not everybody ago listen and duh what the song say.

Kurt ‘The Party Animal’ Riley’s stance on the issue disc jocks contributing to the negativity in dancehall by playing gangster tunes is somewhat defensive as he outlines that negativity springs from various sources.

Busy Signal - Dancehall Not Link To Crime

By Kon-Vick
OutAroad.com Writer

busysignal_dancehallartistealliancegirls.jpgJamaica’s crime rate has been spiraling beyond control in recent times. There has been constant bombardment on our dancehall artistes to clean up their music as it is argued that the violent lyrical content contributes to the crime wave.

OutAroad.com caught up with ace deejay Busy Signal, known for hits such as Nah Guh a Jail Again, The Days and Badman Place featuring Mavado, who shared his views on the argument outlined above.

“Some people take the message of the music the wrong way, but yuh still can’t blame the music in Jamaica or the rest of the world (for the spiraling crime rate). Music cannot be solely blamed for crime, there is also poverty, lack of jobs and the fact that the highest set of crimes worldwide is caused by dirty politics,” Busy explained.

Busy has shown his versatility in the dancehall genre of music with songs like The Days, a single depicting the everyday hardship in Jamaica, and Nah Guh a Jail Again, which talks about the alleviation of criminal activities. However, one can argue that he also trespass onto the gangster role in Badman Place.

By Krazy Katty

rebecca_silvera_missjamaicauniverse_modelphotos.jpgThe beautiful Rebecca Silvera seems to have a lot going on for her these days after being awarded the second runner-up position in the prestigious Miss Jamaica Universe 2008 competition.

Rebecca recently strutted her stuff for the first time at the launch of this year’s Caribbean Fashion Week 2008, where she dazzled the crowd. However, most interestingly, she will be representing Jamaica in the Miss Jamaica U.S.A. Pageant, to be staged mid June in New York.

When the stunning beauty gets back from the pageant, one she is hoping to win, she will be directing all her energy and focus on her dream of creating her own clothing line.

“I am in talks with some people from Sao Paulo, Brazil and South Beach, Florida to launch a very sexy clothing line. The line will consist tops and a few Brazilian cut pants, but mostly very sexy dresses that hug every curve and even enhance what is not there (ladies you know what I mean). The style will be very seductive, sexy and definitely not for the shy or conservative,” she told OutAroad.com in an exclusive interview.

Latifa 'Tifa' Brown Heading To The Top

By Kon-Vick
OutAroad.com Writer

tifa_sexy_deajay_femalemodel.jpgFor female artistes in Jamaica’s hostile dancehall circles, getting ahead is a daunting task. There is usually the speculation of who is sleeping with whom, and who have to do some immoral things to get ahead. For OutAroad.com Break Out Artiste for this Month, Tifa, those challenges are non-existent.

For Tifa, christened Latifa Brown, the road to stardom has been somewhat easy thus far. Music has always been a part of the singer/deejay life. Her stepfather, Sampalue, the reggae producer who assisted in the building of several music careers inclusive of dancehall’s queen Lady Saw, gave her a deep-rooted love for dancehall music. Her active participation in various aspects of the music began from prep school days and has since rolled on like a train.

“I love music. I have been involved with music all my life. I was a member of the Ashe Caribbean Performing Arts Academy and Ensemble and toured extensively with the group throughout the Caribbean and North America from 1996 to 2000,” she explained.

Konshens Lashes Out Against Fake Rastas

By Kon-Vick
OutAroad.com Writer

“Dem a nuh Rasta - Dem a ‘Ras Hair,’
Talk this loud mi nuh fear”

konshens_naturalbridge_dancehallartiste.jpgJamaica’s fast rising star, Konshens is in the spotlight again, and this time there is a bit of controversy surrounding same. The deejay who burst on the scene with the mega hit Winner (This Year Mi Affi Be Di Winna), has launched an assault on people who wrongfully associate themselves with Rastafarianism.

In some nail biting and rather witty lyrics Konshens chastises artistes that “natty up dem head”. Already there are words on the street that several Rastafarian individuals are pondering whether or not he (Konshens) is ‘throwing words’ at them.

Here are some of the lyrics that will have some artistes sweating:

“Mi si nuff a dem a natty up dem head fi get exposure,
But a real Rasta Man nuh run down riches like Dover,
Dem impersonating Rasta,
But mi Rasta friend dem seh bun up a Rasta imposter
Natty up dem head fi ketch a hype up,
Seh dem a rasta, but Rasta livity dem nah hoist up,
Wha’ kind a food that dem a bite up,
Dem seh dem a Ras, what kind of girl that dem a wife up”

Just Like Clockwork, Mavado Keeps On Ticking

mavadogangstaforlife_bountykiller_sexnakedgirls.jpgThere is no stopping Mavado. Despite controversial media attention, the dancehall luminary remains the topic of positive conversation whether it is his generous donations for battered women, a customized dub for Barack Obama, his score on latest Grand Theft Auto video game or critical praise from the world’s most esteemed publications.

The latest Rolling Stone Magazine rates Mavado as the “Best Reggae Artist” in their Best of Rock 2008 issue. Mavado ranks amid this year’s crop of hand-picked winners such as, Radiohead, Bruce Springsteen, Lil Wayne, Danger Mouse and Chris Brown. Rolling Stone journalist Evan Serpick raves, “If you think reggae died with Bob Marley and Peter Tosh, think again. Jamaica's latest star, Mavado, combines hip-hop-influenced beats with ominous minor-key vocals about street life and salvation.”

Also Billboard Magazine recently applauded Mavado for gaining the attention of hip hop mogul, Jay-Z for his “On The Rock” remix. "For most Jamaican dancehall artistes, securing a successful rapper on a song's remix is a hard-won seal of approval. So when Jay Z, who has never recorded on a reggae track, rhymed on a remix of singer Mavado's current hit, On The Rock, it became arguably the greatest endorsement ever given to any dancehall record," Pat Meschino stated in the Billboard article picked up Reuters, the world's largest international multimedia news agency.
