Nando Goes Hard with Yaad and Abroad

While Tinga Stewart's Nuh Weh Nuh Betta Dan Yard, with its nationalistic overtones, remains one of Jamaica's most popular festival songs, the fact that there are as many Jamaicans living abroad as there are Jamaicans living in yaad (Jamaican's sentimental name for Jamaica) suggests that the realities of life may influence even the most patriotic of Jamaicans to set up shop abroad. Still, true Yaadies never forget their roots.
Nando_griffiths_album_yaad-adn_abroad.jpg
Though they may physically settle in a foreign land, they always maintain a strong spiritual connection to their homeland. Singer Nando Griffiths knows what it is like to live in these two worlds and this experience has provided him with the perfect platform to launch his ground-breaking debut album Yaad and Abroad on the One Jam Music label.

Yaad and Abroad is an outstanding 17-track album that has reggae and dancehall at its core but also ventures successfully into urban-pop and R&B. The album may be split into four segments: dancehall/urban-pop, lovers rock, R&B, and inspirational. This variety showcases Nando's versatility and ensures that there is something for everyone and a huge bonus for those with an eclectic taste in music. Nando appears equally at home in each genre. On the dancehall/urban pop side, his recent number one Ride All Night and his top-ten hit Look at All These Girls could easily fit into the playlists of the top club deejays across the globe.

His lovers rock tracks cement his place amongst the top contemporary reggae crooners and songs such as his current top-ten ballad My Everything and Your Love look destined to become wedding-day classics. Most top reggae artistes would be ecstatic if they had an album with the quality of the first 12 songs on Yaad and Abroad, but not Nando; he really raises the bar on his R&B tracks.

Busy Signal was sentenced to six months in prison for absconding bail during a hearing in the American state of Minnesota last week Friday. The charge of absconding bail was in relation to a 2002 court case where the prominent entertainer faced a drug charge.

However, with time served considered by the presiding judge, Donovan W. Frank, Busy Signal will only spend an additional two months in the Minnesota-based Sherbourne County Jail and, as a result, the prominent entertainer faces a November 21 date when he's scheduled to be released from prison.
According to Busy Signal's manager, Shane Brown, in an interview with Billboard.com just minutes after the sentencing, the Nah Go Jail Again singer feels relieved that he'll be back on the streets very soon.

"Busy felt like he was in prison for the last 10 years; all he could think about when he went to sleep was this situation so today is a milestone for us because now he is mentally free," Brown said.

Chris Brown Faces Court Hearing Over Positive Marijuana Test

Judge to determine whether singer violated probation

By ROLLING STONE

Chris_brown_court_drug_test.jpg

Chris Brown has tested positive for marijuana while on probation for his infamous 2009 assault on Rihanna, Reuters reports. Brown tested positive in June in Virginia, where he had been fulfilling the community service portion of his sentence. Brown, who was sentenced to five years of probation for the assult, presented a medical marijuana card after the positive test.

Though Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Patricia Schnegg noted mandatory drug testing was not a condition of Brown's probation, she has scheduled a hearing for November 1st to determine whether Brown violated probation and properly finished his community service.

"You are not an ordinary person who can sit in your living room and do whatever you want to do," said Schnegg. "More importantly, a lot of people look up to you, a lot of kids. What you do and what you say impacts a lot of people." Brown's lawyer, Mark Geragos, maintains the singer has "completed all of his community service."

Brown has been busy dealing with a $16 million lawsuit and other fallout from his June brawl with Drake in a New York nightclub.

Nature Makes Impact On Us Market With 'World Peace'

Nature_World_peace_photo_video_Jamaica.jpg

Down Sound Recording artiste Nature returned to the number one spot with 'World Peace' this week, dethroning I-Octane from the pole position on the FIWI Choice Top Ten charts.

Nature believes that the World Peace concept is particularly relevant given the violent anti-American upheavals that convulsed cities in many parts of the Islamic world last week since the trailer of an anti-Muslim film aired on Youtube.

"When you watch CNN and Fox News, you see that it's crazy right now, several countries were having anti-US protests last week, everybody heated, it feels like we are on the verge of World War III so right now, more than ever, we need the concept of World Peace to go out there, it is something that we should all aspire towards. The song itself World Peace is still getting massive rotation, people are loving it because the World Peace concept is appealing to every nation and every religion," he said in a release.

The single, produced on the Down Sound Records imprint, has also popped up on reggae charts in Kenya, Australia and France. The video for the single peaked at #3 on the CVM Hitlist charts. It also held the pole position of the HYPE TV Top 20 charts for three weeks, and peaked at #1 on the CVM TV video charts.

Vybz Kartel wants Tommy Lee to avoid clash with Bounty Killer

Vybz_kartel_tommy_lee_gaza_sparta.jpg

With the ongoing tension between Alliance leader, Bounty Killer and Gaza artiste, Tommy Lee seemingly on the verge of boiling over, the latter artiste's mentor has stepped in to try and quell the beef.

Despite being incarcerated on murder and conspiracy charges, Dancehall superstar, Vybz Kartel has reportedly reached out to Tommy Lee from jail, urging the Some Bwoy deejay not to clash his former mentor turned rival, Bounty Killer. This, after a number of verbal exchanges between Bounty Killer and Tommy Lee, ignited by Killer's comments that artistes should stop making demonic references in their songs while publicizing a link that ties in 'Sparta' (Tommy Lee's persona) with homosexuality.

After initially stating that he would not diss Bounty Killer, Tommy Lee recorded a new track, Goat Head that lyrically lambasted the 'War Lord,' while making reference to some of the Alliance founder's past transgressions. This prompted Bounty Killer to declare himself as Dancehall's 'G.O.A.T (Greatest Of All Time) while calling himself, 'Jesus Pryce' in his fight against demonic lyrics and using disparaging nicknames to describe Tommy Lee.

Vybz Kartel's One Year of incarceration: Publishing Company to Debate on the right to Bail

Kartel's Publishing Company to host 1st Global Social Media Debate on the Right to Bail "Company to mark Vybz Kartel's one year of incarceration with spirited discussion"

vybz_kartel_jamaican_ghetto_incaceration.jpg

KINGSTON, Jamaica: Fresh off attaining global recognition and being named to the prestigious Fall 2012 Reading List for the Public Archive's Radical Black Books, Voice of the Jamaican Ghetto by Vybz Kartel is set to create more waves in the book industry.

Ghetto People Publishing will be hosting an unprecedented global social media debate on September 29, 2012 the date representing one year since Adidja Pamer's (Vybz Kartel) incarceration. The central theme for the discussion will be: "Is it right for a Jamaican citizen that has never been convicted of a crime to stay in jail without bail for more than a year?"

According to Chief Creative Officer Keecha Gooch, there will be sub-questions about the possibility of electronic monitoring for individuals on bail, whether or not artistes should be allowed to record while awaiting trial and overall comments on the justice system.

"This is not a 'free werlboss' initiative". Our company is about bringing issues concerning the Ghetto to the forefront, essentially giving a voice to the voiceless. We need to have intelligent debates about these issues and stop the practice of casting opposing opinions aside. Social Media will allow that to occur and do so in a big and meaningful way. All the information will be located on the web-site www.vybzkartelbook.com," stated a very upbeat Gooch.

Richie Spice fluently speaks the language of acoustic reggae

richie_Spice_free_album.jpg

Subtract the hard-hitting drums and heavy bass-line from reggae music and focus on the guitar (not electric) the instrumentation and in particular the voice, and what you get is acoustic reggae. More precisely, Soothing Sounds: Acoustic, the soon-to-be-released album from reggae stalwart, Richie Spice.

Already being praised for his bold move into an area of reggae much that many artistes shy away from, the eclectic Richie Spice surely isn’t doing this album for the cameras. “It’s not about show-and-tell,” Spice explains mildly.

“Soothing Sounds: Acoustic is another step in my journey as I seek knowledge and try to pour out what I have learnt into other vessels,” the uber conscious Rastaman explains.

He agrees that in reggae music, there is no real mould for the acoustic, and it is this which has challenged the singer’s creativity and enhances his overall sense of achievement on the project. Free, the first single from Spice’s acoustic set, has garnered much critical acclaim since its release and, not surprisingly, the album seems poised for international success. Perhaps even a Grammy?

By M Jodee
OutAroad Freelance Writer

buju_banton_case_dissmissed.jpgInternationally acclaimed Reggae artiste, Buju Banton wants no part of his next scheduled court appearance as he plans to skip his upcoming sentencing hearing.

On October 30, Buju Banton faces a sentencing hearing in a Florida courtroom in relation to federal drug and gun charges stemming from his initial 2009 arrest. Buju issued an appeal to overturn his conviction and subsequent 10-year sentence on drug charges earlier this summer but was denied. As a result, a previous gun charge, which was tossed out during his trial in February 2011 was reinstated, thus sparking the possibility that Buju may face another five years in prison.

After a request for a new trial fell through, Buju Banton could be facing even more dire straits. Now, the embattled Reggae star hopes to skip his upcoming sentencing hearing after a member of his new legal team, Ihmotep Alkebu-lan intimated that his client formally requesting that he be absent from the hearing.

Junior Kelly Completes Contractual Obligation With VP Records

junior_kelly_contrac_vp_records.jpgGreat vibes all around as Junior Kelly moves on from VP Contract As far as internationally-acclaimed reggae artist, Junior Kelly, is concerned, his years spent under contract with VP Records were not only productive and interesting, they contributed significantly to his development and progress globally.

"They were seven good years musically and otherwise," Kelly said in an interview. "And seven is really such an awesome number, so it was significant and appropriate that after seven years, we closed the chapter on what proved to be a mutually beneficial agreement," the conscious Rasta Artiste stated.

It was in 2003 that Junior Kelly inked the deal with reggae music giant, VP Records, and began a musical journey of exploration that took him along a meandering learning curve. The 2010 opus, Red Pond, signaled the delivery of the final album for VP under the contractual obligations. However, while Red Pond gained critical acclaim, there are some who feel that the true potential of the album was never fully capitalized and that the artist would have benefited more had there been an effective and penetrative marketing thrust in place.

KC Jockey - "Y Hate Each Other"

KC%20Jockey.jpgNew York, NY (Sweet Sadie's Records) - Jamaican-born and New York-raised R&B artist KC Jockey is no stranger to the method of using song to spread a greater message. This week, in commemoration of 9/11, KC is releasing a new track titled "Y Hate Each Other," with a hope of spreading more awareness to the world of all the unnecessary hatred and violence that has plagued our way of life.

The tragic events of 9/11 have haunted and inspired KC to write this new track in time for the 11 year anniversary. As he imagines what the families of the victims continue to go through to this day, KC says, "NYC will never recover from this tragic incident, and we as a nation will only get stronger from our experiences. We will try to live better and do positive things and be aware of the violence and unnecessary hatred that's out there. We have to live together, so why fight."

KC has taken similar social stances in the past, with music and lyrics supporting the fight against domestic abuse of women. Being a huge fan of Jamaica's most beloved artist, and probably one of the most influential singer-songwriters to guide social change through music, Bob Marley, KC's musical approach follows many of Marley's ways in an never ending battle for change.

"They rejoice for your downfall wanna see you dead. Hidden from view my silent tears flow freely. God better anoint them before it's too late."

Nando Rides to the Top

Nando_griffiths_american_jamaican.jpgWith the release of his debut album Yaad and Abroad on the One Jam Music label now officially set for September 27, singer Nando Griffiths has reasons to feel optimistic about the potential success of the 17-track album. Some of his optimism is in no doubt fueled by the momentum of his Ride All Night single, which has risen to the top of several Jamaican charts. Ride All Night, which features contributions from Oxxygen and Paashot, is holding down the number 1 position on the Jamaica Top 25 Dancehall Countdown for the second week in a row and is also occupying the top position on a number of video charts including CVM Hit List, BOJ TV Top 10, and the Hype TV VTX Top 10.

The success of Ride All Night follows that of Team Jamaica (Light the Torch), which burned up the airwaves before and during the London 2012 Olympics and was endorsed by several radio stations in both yaad and Jamaican communities abroad as their official theme song for the Jamaican team to the London 2012 Olympics. While Team Jamaica and Ride All Night set the pace for the release of Yaad and Abroad, My Everything, which is being hailed as one of the best original lovers rock tunes in recent years, looks set to continue Nando's relay of hits, as it has been steadily climbing the Jamaica Top 25 Reggae Chart and is now in the number 7 spot.

Chris Brown shows off tattoo on his neck of a brutally beaten woman

BY MEENA HART DUERSON
nydailynews

Chris_brown_tatto_rihanna_battered_face.jpg

Chris Brown may have rekindled his romance with Rihanna, but he says a shocking new tattoo on his neck isn't an homage to his former flame despite the eerie resemblance.
The famously hot-tempered R&B star showed off some fresh ink on the red carpet earlier this month, displaying a large tattoo of a woman’s face on the side of his neck.

The black-and-white image shows a woman whose bone structure, arched eyebrows and full lips bear a striking similarity to Brown’s onetime girlfriend Rihanna, but the tattoo version bears the scars of a serious beating.

Her full lips are covered in stitches while she looks like she has a black eye and bruising on the right side of her face.

Sources told TMZ the tattoo is not meant to portray Rihanna, but “a random woman.”

Nevertheless, the image is an unpleasant reminder of the infamous night Brown brutally assaulted Rihanna in 2009 after the Grammy Awards, causing her to be hospitalized with bruises on her face.

Bounty_Killer_Tommy_Lee_Sting_clash.jpg

Highly regarded Dancehall legend, Bounty Killer doesn’t seem to be riding on the ever-growing Tommy Lee bandwagon after the Alliance leader called out the popular Gaza artiste regarding his persona and lyrical content.

Tommy Lee rose to prominence due to his unique, intimidating sound as well as him self-proclaimed 'gothic' type of Dancehall in which he sometimes wears masks in his music videos. However, that 'dark' form of Dancehall has rubbed many industry players the wrong way, including Bounty Killer, who tweeted out a link making reference to the 'Sparta' persona that Tommy Lee sports.

"All a who a call dem self "SPARTA" Click this Rassc****t http://sexandhistory.blogspot.com/2008/06/sparta-experiment-in-state-fostered.html … !! Tell Mi If Unu A "SPARTA" Again zeen?" Bounty Killer tweeted, showing a link that links the 'Sparta' concept to homosexuality.

Bounty Killer then issued a statement, through Alliance Next Generation manager, Cross Cris explaining his reservations against Tommy Lee and other artistes who sing similar lyrics.

"Tired a dem now yow every man know a me say youths fi run the place, but nuh come chat nuh f****y bout freak and devil or demon, ago kill off some a dem, so when a man ago sing certain things him nuh think say nobody was gonna have a problem wid him argument dem, a when since u can just come inna dancehall and a bring een demon ppl freely so? how long we have we dancehall nice and pure mad mi mad to bloodc****, some a dem too brite and no big man inna dancehall naah stand up and tell dem say dat nuh accepted, ppl mi fight fi dancehall wid mi life and say f**k career dem naah mash it up enuh!" the statement read.

Richie Spice ready to open the next chapter

Richie_Spice_Free_Video.jpgConscious reggae singer, Richie Spice, explored the depth of his musical ability with the 2011 release of his fifth studio album, the critically acclaimed Book of Job.

Rated as the most digitally sold Reggae album for 2011 by iTunes and the New York Times, Book of Job, distributed by VP Records, peaked between #1 and #4 on the Billboard Reggae Charts for a period of six months, from the date of release. Propelling the popularity of Book of Job were hits such as Black Woman, produced by Raging Fyah, Yap Yap, produced by Lenky Marsden, Legal, produced by Richie Spice, and New Day, which held down the #1 spot in Kenya and Grenada, for three months.
However, as successful as the Book of Job proved to be, Richie Spice is not one to sit on his laurels and is a firm believer in the saying, 'the best is yet to come'.

"Book of Job did well for reggae, not just for me Richie Spice. With all the talk about reggae music not having an impact, it is important to understand that there are a lot of great songs being produced by reggae singers, producers and musicians, but unfortunately these songs, for whatever reason, are not being heard. I have songs which have topped charts in Kenya and other countries in Africa, yet Jamaica hardly plays these songs. And I am sure that it is the same for a lot of other reggae artistes. But we do what we have to do and keep on putting out good, cultural, conscious music for our fans to enjoy," the usually quiet reggae singer declared.

Beenie Man Condemns Violence At Labor Day Carnival [EXCLUSIVE VIDEO]

By Jerry L. Barrow, Senior Editor
Theurbandaily

New York’s West Indian Day Carnival has been a tradition in the city since the 1920s. Immigrants from Jamaica, Trinidad and various islands throughout the Caribbean held private celebrations in Harlem with music and food from their native countries that soon became public affairs. After undergoing several evolutions over the years, it now exists as one of the largest cultural gatherings in New York City attracting visitors from across the globe Brooklyn’s Eastern Parkway.

However, in recent years gun violence has marred the festivities casting a cloud of justified concern. Grammy Award winning Jamaican Reggae artist Beenie Man has been a regular participant in the Labor Day Carnival and Parade since the mid ’90s and says his experience has been overwhelmingly positive. But he feels that artists need to take more responsibility for maintaining a level of decorum on the Parkway.

Watch his interview with TheUrbanDaily.com where Beenie Man cautions today’s Dancehall artists to take the necessary steps to ensure their own safety, as well as their fans.

By Aceshowbiz

Rhymes is featured in the first offering from Kingston's upcoming effort 'Back 2 Life', and he enlists Gucci Mane for his own latest track from ninth album 'Year of the Dragon'.

Sean_kingston_busta_rhymes_How_We_Survive.jpgSean Kingston is gearing up to debut his new album "Back 2 Life" and has given a taste to it by releasing the first single. Featuring Busta Rhymes, the song is titled "How We Survive" which is appropriate to what recently happened to him since he survived a jet ski accident in May 2011.

Creator of 'Jamaican Girls Exposed' Website arrested, exposed and Charged

By M. Jodee
OutAroad Freelance Writer

Ronald_Oates_exposed.jpgAfter months of speculation and hype, the supposed creator of a controversial Jamaican adult website has charged for his operation of the outlet.

Law enforcement officials arrested 27-year-old Ronald Oates on Monday and subsequently slapped him with several charges under the cyber-crimes act and the larceny act on Friday. Oates was nabbed by police at his home where they seized several computers, mobile phones, wireless modems, flash drives amongst other items.
In a press conference held on Friday morning, representatives of the Organized Crime Investigation Division (OCID) intimated that they arrested Oates after receiving aid from police personnel overseas.

Oates will appear in court next week Wednesday to answer the aforementioned charges. Jamaican Girls Exposed became a hot button website for adult content when it emerged on the scene earlier this year, showing several graphic photos and videos of Jamaican women without their consent. A number of high-profile entertainment personalities were featured on the website, including internationally acclaimed Reggae singer, Denyque, award-winning media personality, Pepita Little and, most recently, Miss Jamaica World 2011 finalist, Kayla Mendes.

After initially being shut down this past spring, Jamaican Girls Exposed returned on a pair of occasions with the tagline 'Exposing Jamaican Girls will never stop.' The third version of this adult website was removed last week after posting several more graphic photos and videos of Jamaican women.

According to reports, Mavado has communicated with highly acclaimed Gaza deejays, Tommy Lee and Popcaan regarding possible collaborations. A source close to entertainment website, Urban Islandz confirmed the exchanges, insisting that this move will help to encourage unity throughout the Jamaican music industry.

"The link was made through a third party and a popular producer in Jamaica…Mavado, Popcaan and Tommy Lee are the hottest artists in dancehall right now and we need unity in the industry. You never know you might just see a collab from Mavado and Kartel in the future," the source said.
