The entertainment world has suffered another painful blow after news emerged on Thursday night that prominent disc jock, Michael "Mighty Mike" Jones passed away. The 52-year-old broadcaster was found dead at his St. Ann home last night after he was noticeably absent from his scheduled 6-10 p.m. shift at IRIE FM.
According to reports, a member of staff and fellow disc jock at IRIE FM, DJ Amber was dispatched to Mighty Mike's house after several phone calls to locate Jones went unanswered.
After several knocks on Mighty Mike's door also went unanswered, a locksmith was reportedly called in to break into the veteran disc jock's home, where he was then found dead. Police then arrived on the scene to investigate, later intimating that they suspected no foul play had been involved in the musician's death.
Reportedly, Mighty Mike had been ill for some time and was diabetic.
DJ Amber issued a Blackberry Broadcast message reading, "I wish my brethren Mighty Mike will enjoy an even greater life in the spirit world. He will be missed and remembered well by many. Gone but not forgotten. See you next lifetime my friend."
Many fellow disc jocks including ZJ Sparks and ZJ Elektra from ZIP FM as well as Renaissance Sound's Jazzy T issued heartfelt tributes to Mighty Mike while also sending condolences to his family as a result of this tragedy. Perhaps no one took the news harder that DJ Sani, Mighty Mike's son and a fellow DJ, who found out the stunning news via Twitter.
According to DJ Sani, whose real name is Hasani Jones, his family has been in a complete state of shock since finding out the news; insisting that though he knew his father had been ill, he didn't consider it life-threatening.
Mighty Mike debuted at IRIE FM in 1992 and has been a mainstay at the Jamaican radio station ever since. He's also renowned for doing the X-Rated Gang mix series.
