Mavado set to make triumphant return to Jamaican stage at 'Extravaganza'

mavado_gt_taylor_christmas_extravaganza_2011.jpgDecember 25 is celebrated as Christmas Day, and high rolling dancehall deejay, Mavado, has a special treat for his fans in Jamaica when he performs at the annual Jagra GT Taylor Christmas Extravaganza.

It will mark Mavado's first performance locally in many months and fans are eager to welcome home the Gully Gad after what they perceive as a too-long absence. It will be a red carpet style welcome for the deejay, who, despite a lack of physical presence, has remained deeply entrenched in the hearts, minds and on the lips of fans with his popular songs blasting the airwaves.

“We were very happy to secure Mavado for the show this year,” said promoter, GT Taylor. “We have been watching his progress this year, in particular, and recognize that Mavado is one of the artistes making big strides overseas and that is definitely good for dancehall,” GT, the Dancehall Master, added.

Mavado will be headlining a strong lineup of artistes on ‘Extravaganza’ and he is as excited about the event as his fans. “There is no place like home,” says the artiste who has been keeping company overseas with the likes of DJ Khaled, Rick Ross, Lil Wayne, Ace Hood and Busta Rhymes. “What better way to spend Christmas than at Extravaganza with my fans? It will be the Gully Gad as you have never seen him before,” David Brooks, aka Mavado, promised.

buju-bantoncourt-pics.jpgEmbattled Reggae superstar, Mark Myrie, more popularly known as Buju Banton, will call another prison home as he serves his ten-year prison sentence on drug-related charges.

The Grammy-winning singjay has been in transit several times since his sentencing this past June on three drug charges stemming from a December 2009 incident in Florida. Buju initially started his sentencing in Miami, where his trial and eventual conviction occurred. However, the popular Reggae singer was transferred from the Pinellas County Jail in Tampa, Florida to the Federal Holding Centre in Oklahoma City, where he spent a month, before finally being moved to the Limestone County Correctional Institution in Groesbeck, Texas.

However, a South Florida newspaper reports that Buju's prison adventure will come full circle as the internationally acclaimed artiste faces a move, en-route, to the Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) in Miami, Florida. According to Buju's lawyer, David Markus, Buju endured several hardships during two month stay in the Texas facility; describing the environment as one of a violent and unhealthy nature that made the singjay rather uncomfortable.

blak_ryno_kartel_popcaan_diss_walk_and_talk.jpgPopular Dancehall singjay, Romane Anderson, more popularly known as Black Ryno can express relief now that travel documents, which were recently stolen from him, have been returned.

The Garrison Records recording artiste was robbed whilst attending a meeting at the Supreme Promotions headquarters on Burlington Avenue in Kingston on Sunday. Bandits broke into Ryno's vehicle outside the headquarters; stealing the singjay's passport, accompanying travel documents and clothing. Ryno's passport was issued just hours prior to the incident as he used it to conduct some business.

On Tuesday, it was announced that Ryno's travel documents were returned by a friend of fellow Dancehall artiste, Flexx. The former protégé of Gully Squad leader, Mavado, was simultaneously at a recording studio where one of the members of Ryno's management team hung out. Flexx then told Ryno's affiliate that the documents were recovered.

Black Ryno issued a statement expressing his delight with the new development.

"I want to say a special thank you to Flexx and the young lady for being good Samaritans; it’s good to see that there are still honest, caring people in our society."
With passport in hand, Ryno will look to finalize preparations for tours in St. Kitts, Turks & Caicos as well as Costa Rica next month prior to his scheduled performance at STING 2011 in Portmore.

VP Records & Scikron Join Forces To Release I-Octane's First Official Album

"I-Octane's fusion of hauntingly sung vocals with rapid-fire rhymes...reaffirm dancehall's significance as a vehicle for compelling commentaries and praising Jah..." BILLBOARD

I-octane_album_crying_to_nation_album_reggae_dancehall.jpgVP Records and Scikron are proud to announce the release of I-Octane's debut album, 'Crying To The Nation,' available January 31, 2012. As one of the most-talked about artists emerging from Jamaica, I-Octane's first full-length LP will reinvigorate the feeling of roots and dancehall at its purest. He has already proven himself as a lyricist with rapid-fire delivery, and unveils his uncanny ability to sing romantic ballads and socially aware tunes on this traditional reggae album.

'Crying To The Nation' puts I-Octane in a class of his own as one of the next generation's leaders of the conscious dancehall movement. Following in a similar vein of his predecessors Sizzla, Capleton and Buju Banton, his lyrics express sentiments of faith, romance, social justice and compassion for the ghetto youth. His brand new single "L.O.V.E Y.O.U," "Missing You" (remix featuring Agent Sasco) and "Once More" reflect his emotional sensibility, while songs like "Vanity Will Come," "All We Need Is Love" (featuring Tarrus Riley) and the title track are filled with positive messages and political leanings, something that the current state of dancehall often lacks.

"I feel good about all the songs I've done since I have started out, but this album is very special to me because I got the chance to make the type of songs that I really enjoy and meds the music in a different creative way. My fans will get to see another side of me and after all the challenges I've faced in the industry, seeing my first album is a great accomplishment. I give thanks for that," states I-Octane.

It's About Time - Barrington Levy to release new album this week

By Marc Parc
OutAroad.com Writer

barrington_levy_its_about_time_album.jpgInternationally acclaimed Dancehall/Reggae singer, Barrington Levy, will unveil his 29th and, possibly, last studio album/compilation this week.
It's About Time, Levy's much talked about project, will be released via Black Roses Entertainment; featuring several prominent local and international acts. The album's regarded by many fans and Dancehall observers as his most anticipated album since 1998's Living Dangerously that featured Dancehall superstar, Bounty Killer for the album's classic title track, as well as American hip-hop superstar, Snoop Dogg.

Snoop features once again alongside Levy for It's About Time along with fellow rapper Jadakiss and Jamaican-born hip-hop stars, Busta Rhymes as well as Love Me Like This featuring the late Heavy D, who recently passed away at his Los Angeles home of complications from pneumonia at the age of 44. The single was reportedly recorded in California last year.
Additionally, Levy's new album features Grammy-winning Reggae superstar, Damian 'Jr. Gong' Marley, who collaborates with the Here I Come singer for the track, Healthy. A video for the single is expected to drop in early 2012.

It's About Time could mark Levy's final studio album after the established singjay admitted last year that he believed he'd only tour and record singles once the project hits stores.

By Marc Parc
OutAroad.com Writer

Internationally acclaimed Dancehall singjay, David 'Mavado' Brooks has returned to Jamaica after spending the better part of four months touring and recording overseas; seeking to address speculation surrounding him since his departure.

The self-professed Gully Gad became the subject of controversy within the last two weeks following reported tension between him and Gully Squad protégé, Flexx. The tension resulted from a recent interview Mavado gave via IRIE FM addressing rumors of Flexx being on tour with him while named a person of interest. The singjay intimated that Flexx was not on tour with him, leading the Gully Squad artiste to call out Mavado and accuse him of disassociating himself from the situation. Flexx appeared on the November 19 edition of CVM's OnStage; saying that Mavado got "hype" and failed to appreciate all he did for the Gully camp's leader.

Speaking with Winford Williams on CVM's OnStage this past Saturday, Mavado insisted that he has no beef with Flexx; expressing surprise at the Stepping Razor deejay's anger towards him.

Drake's First Week Sales Are Not Important To Lil Wayne

By Rob Markman

MTV News

lil_wayne_blue_lights_outaroad.jpgThough the first week numbers for Drake’s Take Care aren’t in yet, it’s pretty much a given that the Toronto MC will snag the #1 spot on the Billboard 200 Album Chart when the numbers are officially revealed and positioning is determined on Wednesday. Based on early projections Drizzy could move as much as 700,000 copies of his sophomore set, but while much of the music world is fixated on Drake’s sales numbers, his Young Money boss Lil Wayne is not.

"As far as expectations, we don't have those around here. Expectations are a weakness in the music business because if you expect anything, 10 times out of 10 it's not gonna happen, so we don't have expectations around here," Lil Wayne told MTV News on Friday when we caught up with him on a trip to New Orleans where, he gave out Thanksgiving Turkeys in his old neighborhood on Saturday.

"What we do expect is ... to work very hard and we expect people to respect our hard work and our effort," Weezy continued. "Now as far going to buy the album, as far as going to get 750,000 copies, that's never a problem with us; that's never important to us."

Twilight Breaking Dawn sparks 'convulsing, snorting' seizures in US cinemas

Epileptic fits in male viewers blamed on light effects during vampire birthing scene

Xan Brooks

The%20Twilight%20Saga%20Breaking%20Dawn%20-%20Part%201.jpgThe critics have labelled it slow, bloated and joyless. The Guardian's own Peter Bradshaw described it as an "emo-operetta" that "sweeps us away on a riptide of mawkish euphoria". Yet it transpires that the latest Twilight picture may possess a power that was somehow missed by its early detractors. It is now being blamed for triggering epileptic seizures in filmgoers across America.

Brandon Gephart, from Roseville, California, was reportedly rushed to hospital after falling ill during the movie's climactic birthing sequence. "He was convulsing, snorting, trying to breathe," his girlfriend Kelly Bauman told reporters from CBS Sacramento. "He scared me big time." The screening ended prematurely following the arrival of paramedics.

Elsewhere, ABC4 in Salt Lake City ran the story of an unnamed Utah man who suffered a similar seizure while watching the film. "I didn't really remember what happened after that," the man explained. "I think I blacked out. According to [my wife] I was shaking and mumbling different noises."

OutAroad.com Writer

buju_banton_benefit_concert_2012.jpgOn December 3, 2011, patrons are expected gather around a Tampa, Florida stage seeking to hear lyrics promoting messages of peace, love and harmony from their favorite Reggae superstars. However, while performers will offer various selections of a positive nature, they'll collectively try to honor an embattled singjay who nurtured his music to provide upliftment for fans worldwide.

Next week Saturday, the Buju Banton benefit concert will take place at the Supa D Tropical Bar & Grill in Tampa, Florida; starting at 1pm. Buju, currently serving a ten year sentence on drug related charges, becomes the subject of an event dedicated towards providing financial support ahead of his appeal on said conviction. The lineup card for the benefit concert includes internationally renowned Reggae artistes, Delly Ranx, Gramps Morgan, Nadine Sutherland, Glen Washington and Norris Man amongst others whilst featuring a yet-to-be named special guest artiste. Also, persons planning to attend the show will be asked to make a US$20 donation for the cause as organizers hope to make at least US$50,000 from the concert for Buju's legal defense.

The event's main organizer, Taranee Jiles, is a long-time friend of Buju Banton; desiring a concept to help the artiste's cause whilst languishing in a Texas federal prison. Out of friendship and the hope Buju walks free sooner rather than later, Jiles formulated the idea of the benefit concert; an idea fans and supporters of the Grammy-winning singjay quickly bought into.

United States drug officials revealed on Wednesday that a well-renowned Reggae singer has appeared on their radar as a possible link to former West Kingston strong man, Christopher "Dudus" Coke. According to officials, documents are currently being processed as they are seeking to arrest the singer. Additionally, it was revealed that the singer plies his trade as producer and promoter, despite having no major hit songs to his name.

The report follows up Tuesday's news that American law enforcement officials were probing a popular Dancehall singjay for drug-related allegations. The singjay being investigated has a green card according to the U.S, is Kingston-based and has several hit songs to his name. Additionally, the singjay reportedly has two warrants out for his arrest.

Christopher "Dudus" Coke currently awaits sentencing in the United States for charges in a drug case which he pleaded guilty months earlier. Coke pled-guilty to a count of racketeering conspiracy and a count of conspiracy to commit assault with a dangerous weapon in aid of racketeering.

Before They Were Stars with Lady Saw

By Marc Parc
OutAroad.com Writer

lady_saw_before_they_were_stars_outaroad.jpg

With a well-deserved title as the "Queen of Dancehall" to her name, Lady Saw has proven herself as the gold standard amongst female deejays. Un-intimidated by a male-dominated Dancehall industry where females struggle to earn major opportunities, Lady Saw blazed the trail for aspiring deejays looking to make waves on the local and international music industry.

However, Lady Saw offers an alter-ego contrary to her personal life; particularly at a younger age. Born Marion Hall in 1971, the St. Mary native endured various hardships within a family struggling to make ends meet. To assist her parents in achieving income, Hall picked fruits and vegetables to sell at the nearest market whilst also playing her trade as a domestic worker.

During her younger days, Hall sang in a church choir; earning recognition for her vocal abilities. However, Hall's break came when she started to record Reggae singles for various sound systems; testing her styles in an effort to realize her potential as an artiste. Recording for sound systems since the age of 15, Hall gained knowledge pertaining to the professional process of music and decided to move to Kingston to pursue her career.

While in Kingston, Hall noticed that males within the Dancehall fraternity were earning much more praise and accolades compared to their female counterparts; not gaining acclaim for the positive music they preached. That prompted Hall to transform her lyrical from conscious and clean to raunchy and rebellious; attempting to rival her male counterparts within the industry.

Khago rocks Strictly the Best show in Boston

khago_tour_hot_97_concert_boston.jpgThe girls in the crowd screamed enthusiastically inside the Showcase Live venue in Boston as international dancehall recording star Khago hit the stage with his signature 'ah Khago' announcement. The Nah Sell Out Mi Friend Dem singer was one of the headline acts at the Strictly the Best concert held on November 22nd and he did not disappoint the capacity crowd after an emphatic introduction by leading Boston Hot 97 radio personality VOG.

Lighters and forwards greeted his 'Blood a Boil' with the white girls in the crowd leaping up to grab his hand or tug at the foot of his jeans. He greeted the crowd with a "good morning Boston, this is my first time here". He then segued neatly into the reggae-flavoured 'Gwaan Live My Life' and hands swayed in the crowd. Then he paused to address the large audience.

"If yu have an enemy, mek mi see oonu hand, everybody need an enemy, my enemy motivate me fi rise up inna the morning," he said, before launching out into the soulful 'Nah Mek Dem Change My Energy'.

Then he changed the tone of his performance by doing his current number one hit, Tun Up De Ting on the Overproof Riddim, and dozens of lighters flickered in the nightclub.

Established Dancehall singjay being sought by U.S law officials in connection with "Dudus"

By M. Jodee
Contributing Writer

Untitled_homeland_security.jpgAnother established Dancehall artiste could soon be facing major charges following the revelation that he's an associate of a prominent Jamaican drug lord.
American law enforcement officials are seeking an internationally acclaimed deejay who they say has strong ties to notorious west Kingston strong man, Christopher "Dudus" Coke; involving in drug-related activity. "Dudus" awaits sentencing in the United States after recently pleading guilty to drug-related charges.

Though the identity of the high-ranking singjay has yet to be revealed, an American law enforcement official confirmed that the artiste is Kingston-based, being sought in Michigan on drug-related allegations and faces at least two other warrants. Additionally, the official revealed that the singjay currently holds a green card and isn't the only prominent Jamaican artiste who could face drug charges in the United States.

This revelation comes days after Assistant Commissioner of Police, Ealan Powell, intimated that other local deejays have appeared on his radar and that law enforcement officials will arrest the alleged offenders in due time.

Da'Ville Gets Real In Took A Break

daville_reggae_singer_jamaica_songs.jpgIt's reggae crooner Da'ville like you've never heard him in "Took A Break", the second single from his upcoming album.
The song just jumps out at you, it's almost like a letter from Da'ville to his fans coming straight from the heart. Listening to this his latest effort it's hard not to be caught up in the words as he just seem to bare his soul inviting a rare glimpse into his world.

"I know I've been away for a while, I took a break from the stage and the lies
You don't really see my trouble and my trials, All you see is the glitz and the glam...But you really don't see the man that I am...I hide my pain and I don't let it show..."
sings the artiste.

Commenting on this gem of a song Da'ville says it's his story and that of everyone who has ever been branded and misjudged.

By Marc Parc
OutAroad.com Writer

mavado_robbed.jpgInternationally acclaimed Dancehall artiste, David "Mavado" Brooks will be made to wait a while longer before his next court appearance regarding an assault case.

The Alliance-affiliated singjay, charged with assault occasioning bodily harm in relation to an incident this past summer, was ordered to return to court on May 16, 2012 following a hearing on Monday morning. The charges stems from an incident leading to the shooting death of entourage member and close friend Conroy "Connie" Edwards outside Bounty Killer's birthday party at the QUAD nightclub in June.

It's alleged that Mavado and his entourage engaged in a tussle with off-duty police officers, leading to the incident. Edwards was then shot in the abdomen by a stray bullet that Mavado later claimed was intended for him. Edwards succumbed to his injuries three days later at the Kingston Public Hospital.

Mavado also is involved in another assault case stemming from an incident hours after the conclusion of Reggae Sumfest 2011 in Montego Bay, St. James. That case was postponed to February 2012 following an appearance in the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate's Court in September.

Chino Gets Ready To Drop Japan Album

chino_album_japan_reggae_dancehall.jpgReggae and dancehall singjay, Chino, is already in preparation mode for yet another album.

The artiste who released is sophomore Japan album, Never Change, last summer and a self-entitled US debut album, Chino, in May of this year, has started working on another album which is scheduled for release in Japan early next year.

One of the earliest singles, he says, will be a remix of his hit single, Seal Di Link featuring Japanese female artiste, Akane. "She will be singing in Japanese, while I sing in English," says Chino.

The Driving Me Insane, Must Come Back and Ruff It Up singer is no stranger to imbibing his music with a Japanese flair - his previous Japanese album, Never Change, featured a Japanese version of his hit song, From Mawnin'. The single went on to become the number one downloaded/purchased track and ringtone on Japan's most established ringtone sites, Reggae Zion - a first for anyone outside of the Japan market. The song soon became the site's theme song - also a courtesy previously extended to only Japanese acts, while the album became one of Japan's overall best sellers that year.

Rihanna Causes Stir In U.K., France

Singer, whose Talk That Talk is out this week, offended audience with what she wore on Britain's 'X Factor.'

Rihanna seems to be making trouble everywhere she goes these days. On Sunday night, she accepted her American Music Award for Favorite R&B/Soul Album remotely from the U.K., where she was performing on "The X Factor." And part of her ensemble for that performance had heads turning.

Donning a demure plaid dress and clunky punk shoes with writing scrawled all over them, one phrase on the footwear had some people up in arms. According to The Telegraph, the words "F--- Off" were written on Ri's shoes. While the offensive statement may have left audiences a bit shocked, a spokesperson for the show played down the controversy.

"There were no close-up shots of Rihanna's shoes," the spokesperson said. "We believe the performance was suitable."

Rihanna caused a similar stir last December when she appeared on the British reality program scantily clad in a provocative outfit.

PR JAMAICA ENT - Kingston: Emerging Dancehall star and the "Princess of Dancehall," Tiana shows her range once again with the release of her newest single, F**k You Up; proving she's more than just a pretty face.

Tiana's latest effort continues a stellar 2011 for the singjay. The breakthrough artiste scored several hits locally and overseas with Pum Pum Phat (Popcaan's Ravin' Remix), Highest Grade (Bruno Mars - Lazy Song Remix) and Bruk Out & Whine on the internationally acclaimed Overproof Riddim.

However, F**k You Up takes a turn from the pulsating, sensual and fun-loving sound that Tiana's been known for throughout her career. As the title of the song illustrates, F**k You Up issues warning shots at women who'd ever try to steal her man. The song, a remix of hip-hop superstar, Lil Wayne's How To Love, calls women who chase after men in relationships hypocrites given that they never tried to do so while said men were available.

"Mi already mek it clear mi nuh trust in wedding band, cah mi have di ukku bit weh fi hol' my man," Tiana deejays in the chorus.
She goes on: "Might look shy but nuh tink seh mi simple, mi is a gyal weh easy get bringle, especially when dem see yuh man an waan fi mingle, dem neva wan di man when him did single."

Stacious addresses Bridgez altercation, Esco talks career progress on RETV 5 to 7 Live

By Marc Parc

stacious_esco_reggae_dancehall_artistes_jamaica.jpgSurprises, excitement and controversy filled Saturday's episode of RETV 5 to 7 Live as they welcomed several premier acts to the show, including three ladies of the highly-acclaimed Bedroom Riddim.

Prominent deejays, Stacious, Natalie Storm and Raine Seville heated up the RETV 5 to 7 Live studios with the premiere of their new Bedroom Riddim Medley music video. They intimated that the Riddim was done for the enjoyment of their male fans and also showed how various females in the industry could set aside their differences and egos to produce a hit.

However, the focus quickly shifted to Stacious, who's been embroiled in controversy over the last week following the much reported fight between herself and fellow Alliance-affiliated artiste, Bridgez outside HYPE TV's studios.

When asked by show host, Yanique Barrett regarding the root of their bad blood, Stacious implied that her issue with Bridgez was prompted by unnecessary pressures put on Bedroom Riddim Medley director, Timberlee during the video shoot in September. The growing tension on set triggered what Stacious called a "disrespectful" reaction from Bridgez; leading to their verbal altercation.

stacious_bridgez__dnacehall_females_artistes.jpgThe ongoing battle between Alliance-affiliated deejays, Stacy "Stacious" Scarlett and Bridgett "Bridgez" Roache seems to have cooled off, but not before getting in a few parting shots.

Last week Friday, reports surfaced that Stacious and Bridgez fought outside the HYPE TV studios in Kingston following the premiere of their Bedroom Riddim Medley video. Reportedly, the fight succeeded an argument following a photo-op when the two brushed each other inside the studio. After a short lull, the altercation spilled into the parking lot where punches were reportedly thrown before they were broken up.

Last night, Stacious took to TVJ's Entertainment Report to put the ongoing tension to rest by explaining what took place during the fight. According to the Gully Squad first lady, she refused to allow Bridgez to disrespect her; implying that she instigated the physical altercation. Additionally, Stacious suggested that Bridgez was the one who decided to publicize what happened initially, via social media; claiming she lied about what happened during the incident.

"You know what it is, it's not a typical thing, you try to avoid people as best as you can….She's the one who went to Twitter and talked all of this rubbish. I'm bigger and I'm better than that," Stacious said.

Guidance, Ico Flamez rocking Africa

ico_flamez_guidance_reggae_artistes_jamaica_africa.jpgReggae singer, Guidance and singjay Ico Flamez, are getting major attention with their collaboration, By The Window, which is # 13 on the highly recognized Stepping Razor chart in Africa and still climbing.

Music insiders agree that these two Rastafarian artistes have surely done justice to this compelling love song, produced by Portmore-based producer, Shaka Indian. "It's really cool to see these two Rasta artistes sincerely pouring out their hearts about a woman," one radio disc jockey commented.

Unfortunately, despite giving their all, the woman leaves and the artistes are in misery, sitting at the window, hoping that one day she will return. It’s a theme which many persons - male and female - can identify with, and it’s all the more inspiring that it’s from a male perspective.

Although Sitting By The Window is Guidance and Ico Flamez’ only collaboration so far, they both have their solo repertoires which they have been unleashing at various stage shows across the island. They recently performed at the popular Plug ‘n’ Play at the Wyndham Hotel in New Kingston and also did a slot on morning television, both of which were very well received.

Before They Were Stars with Sean Paul

By Marc Parc
OutAroad.com Writer

sean_paul_before_they_were_stars_outaroad.jpg

With his name etched into Jamaican folklore as one of the most successful Dancehall/Reggae artistes ever, Sean Paul has a legacy that many musicians within his genre could only dream of having. However, before Sean Paul was a world-renowned musician, he was already a star in a different right before realizing his true calling as a Dancehall/Reggae pioneer.

Born on January 8, 1973, Sean Paul Henriques was instantly immersed in a family full of successful athletes. His parents were talented athletes while his mother was a well-known painter. Additionally, many of his family members were swimmers while his grandfather was a part of Jamaica's first ever national water polo team. Inspired by his grandfather's achievements, Henriques starred on the national water polo team from the start of his high school years at Wolmers High School until the age of 21. It was at that time when Henriques decided to switch careers; desiring to pursue his dream of becoming a musician.

Following graduation from the University of Technology (UTECH), Henriques began to showcase his talents and performed at an open mic event where the brother of prominent producer, Jeremy Harding; compared his powerful vocal style to that of internationally acclaimed Dancehall superstar, Super Cat. After being dubbed with the stage name, Sean Paul, he recorded his first mainstream single in 1997, Ladies Man, alongside Reggae star, Spanner Banner. The single was well received within the industry; prompting a meeting between Harding and Sean Paul. Harding took Sean Paul under his wing and during said meeting, began the process of recording the single, Baby Girl. The two held studio sessions daily whilst formulating a friendship; collaborating on several tracks including Sean Paul's second mainstream hit single, Infiltrate. Their ongoing chemistry led to Harding assuming the role of Sean Paul's manager and producer.

Rihanna Booed On Stage At London Gig After Arriving An Hour Late!

Perhaps It's All That Partying!

By Richard Gilzene

rihanna_booed_concert_london.jpgRihanna took the stage at London's O2 Arena to a chorus of boos from angry fans on Monday night after making fans wait almost an hour for her appearance.

The 'Loud' tour show, which was scheduled to start at 9pm, didn't get underway until 9.55pm.

Fans were left further disappointed when the singer then reportedly put in a half-hearted performance, one fan telling The Sun: "Fans weren't happy at all. Especially as, when she did finally come on stage, her performance was half-hearted."

Perhaps the Bajan beauty was delayed by a slight hangover, having been photographed leaving London night club Whiskey Mist en route to another nightspot in the early hours of Monday morning.

In other news, during alcohol-fuelled celebrations for brother Rorrey's 22nd birthday, Rihanna had reportedly snatched a microphone to warn stunned clubbers to 'always use a condom.'

Another Empire member held in Kartel case, was Shorty arrested?

By M. Jodee
OutAroad.com Writer

vybz_kartel_court_house_gun_charge_murder.jpgAnother arrest has been made in the ongoing legal drama surrounding prominent Dancehall superstar Vybz Kartel.

Andre St. John, otherwise called "Mad Suss" was arrested and charged in a murder case involving mentor, Vybz Kartel. St. John is a member of Kartel's Portmore Empire group, the second member of the "Gaza" camp to be charged regarding the August killing of Clive "Lizard" Williams, a dancer from Waterford, St. Catherine.

St. John was held by police during the September 30 operation where Kartel, Alicia Jackson and Shane Williams were arrested and charged with possession of ganja at a small New Kingston hotel. On Monday morning, St. John was officially charged with murder and shooting with intent in relation to the death of Williams. Kartel, fellow Portmore Empire protégé, Shawn Storm, Calvin "Moonie" Haye and Cayro Jones are also jointly charge in Williams' murder. The next hearing in the case will take place on December 2.

Meanwhile, reports have circulated that Vybz Kartel's common-law wife, Tanesha "Shorty" Johnson may also have been arrested in relation to Kartel's legal troubles. According to said reports, Shorty was hauled out of the same New Kingston hotel where Kartel's initial arrest was made. The arrest was allegedly made this past weekend.
Shorty has three children for Vybz Kartel and last was seen publicly during an interview with CVM TV's D'Wrap, where she intimated that law enforcement officials purposefully tried to humiliate the deejay and his family. Furthermore, Shorty revealed that Kartel's children and mother have had troubles coping since the first murder charge against the deejay was laid out October 3rd; implying that she’s had to seek counseling to deal with the resulting emotional backlash.

By Marc Parc
OutAroad.com Writer

Dancehall star and Gully Squad first lady, Stacy "Stacious" Scarlett has spoken out for the first time since news of a fight between herself and Alliance Next Generation first lady, Bridgez broke on Saturday.
stacious_dancehall_gully_artiste.jpgStacious and Bridgez reportedly exchanged blows following the premiere of their Bedroom Riddim Medley video outside HYPE TV's parking lot Friday night. Allegedly, the fight occurred following a photo-op when the two brushed each other inside the studio. Bridgez took offence, shoving Stacious; leading to an argument between the two singjays. The argument then escalated in the parking lot where punches were reportedly thrown before the artistes were finally separated.
Addressing the incident for the first time publicly, Stacious intimated that she felt disrespected by Bridgez's actions, but conveyed that fighting did the Dancehall industry no favors; apologizing to HYPE TV and fans in the process.

"We were debuting the video and things just got a little bit out of control and I feel like I was disrespected and she start push me, which was totally unnecessary. I must admit, I lost my temper for a second," Stacious explained.
She added, "This is not really a good look for the industry, this is not something I'm proud of…I’m ready and willing to put this behind me and just forget about her."

Stacious and Bridgez's catfight took place a month and a half after a verbal altercation between the Alliance-affiliated artistes on the set of the Bedroom Riddim video shoot. It also, inadvertently, continues a growing tension between the Gullyside and Alliance camps; stemming from this past summer's lyrical feud between Gully artiste, Chase Cross and Alliance leader, Bounty Killer.

buju_banton_support_group_release_prison_10_year.jpgDespite the dyer fate that surround embattled Reggae superstar, Buju Banton, one organization claims that the artiste should not be subjected to his 10 year prison term.

The Buju Banton Letter Writing Campaign issued a letter last week; signaling their objective to secure the Grammy-winning singjay's release, via petition. The group hopes to attain 50,000 signatures to said petition by December 9, 2011; two years to the day Buju was initially arrested on drug-related charges in Florida.

The letter questions the validity of professional informant, Ian Johnson, who testified against Buju during his drug trials in an attempt to avoid significant jail time. In the BBLWC's letter, Buju "was charged as a result of information provided by a professional informant, Ian Johnson, who relentlessly pursued Buju for six months to participate in a drug deal. The professional informant in Buju's case is a convicted drug trafficker."

Johnson reportedly was paid US$50,000 following Buju's arrest in 2009 and has earned over $US 3.3 million for serving as an informant to a plethora of government agencies.

Dancehall artiste Spice is back in the island after a three-week tour in Canada, and is ready to push her latest single, My Boyfriend's Name is Dick.

The tongue-in-cheek single, which showcases Spice's mastery of songwriting was produced by Seanizzle and featured on his Sunrise Riddim. Spice spoke in reference to her Canadian shows and the new single saying, "Oh wow, the reception in Canada was great. I had such a good time with my fans, not only while performing, but also hanging out after and doing signings. It's important to me to spend time with them in between shows, or after performing - it was a good time."

"As far as my new single goes, it was written after I heard the beat. It has a great vibe and I've been pushing it a lot in the streets and it has been getting a huge response. Though the title is a little bit of an eyebrow-raiser the song is extremely clean. It's just a fun play on words and anyone who went to high school with me can tell you English and drama are things I've always loved, so it definitely comes out in my writing and songs now," says Spice known for her mega-hits Jim Screechie, Ramping Shopalongside Vybz Kartel, which hit the Billboard charts upon its release, Slim Vs. Fluffy and others.

Mavado will headline a huge peace concert on the island of St Croix December 30, dubbed the One Love Music Festival.

Violent crime is on the increase all over the world and its important to me to help stem the tide. I'm hoping to partner with the right agencies in Jamaica to do something similar in the near future. We are often criticized for our influence over the youths but a campaign like this shows the potential to use Dancehall acts such as myself to motivate and uplift young people."

Stop the Bleeding co-ordinator and son of the Virgin Island's Lt Governor, Kareem Francis, conceptualized the initiative with Lenny Hansen of LTB Entertainment and approached Mavado in October to headline the campaign and concert; he didn't hesitate to get involved. The organization's aim is to use the event as a constructive platform for the territory to reignite love, peace and joy and to address the recent increase in crime, violence and rising numbers of the murders of young people.

zj_sparks_zip_wild_child_radio_personality.jpgHer personal mantra and one that she embodies in its entirety...
A Musical Selector, Emcee and Vibes Master, Producer, Voice Over Specialist, Copywriter and Actress, ZJ Sparks is definitely more than she appears to be. Firstly, she was not always a "ZJ"; Sparks' broadcasting career sprouted at KLAS 89 FM where she started as a Production Assistant. It was upon the prodding of Dennis Howard and Christopher "The Connoisseur" Jarrett that her voice made it on the airwaves as a Continuity Announcer and, eventually, the Co-host of a Carnival Programme with "The Connoisseur".‬

‪Impressed with her vocal dexterity, Francois St Juste of FAME FM asked her to audition for the station. After a successful audition she was hired by FAME, where she nurtured and strengthened her roots in the Industry. Starting with a mid-morning programme, and then expanding to outside broadcasts, and emceeing the popular FAME Road Show, Sparks gained invaluable experience in dealing with a broad and diverse public. Whilst there, this multi-talented lady also did scriptwriting for the popular legal programme "Under the Law", created by Ed Wallace. It was at FAME where she earned her moniker D'WildChild for her wild hair and highly contagious and spirited personality.

It wasn't just FAME that had an eye for talent, however, as the new and upcoming station Zip 103 FM was also eyeballing the D'WildChild. She opted to take on new challenges and shifted gears to the Playstation Zip 103 fm, where she did both morning and afternoon shows. She learned mixing from ZJ Liquid and Delano from Rennaissance and received vocal training from re-known broadcasters Alma Mock Yen, Leonie Forbes, and Fae Ellington.

Mavado_before_they_were_stars_outaroad.jpg

David Constantine Brooks, known to the world as Mavado, has proven himself as one of the most lyrically-inclined and controversial deejays in the history of Dancehall music. His rise to fame endured its share of troubles, but his determination and ability to adapt has made him a mainstay in the local music industry over the last decade.
Brooks was born on November 30, 1981, raised in the tough, inner-city area of Cassava Piece in Kingston. Given the sudden rise of Dancehall music within the Jamaican folklore, Brooks was somewhat intrigued by the genre.

However, it was his grandmother who gave Brooks his first experience within the musical field; bringing him to church services to sing. The singing sessions at church inspired Brooks to deliver socially conscious music to the masses as congregations witnessed his vocal abilities.

During his high school days, Brooks began to take his talent seriously; meeting with Reggae superstar, Junior Reid at his Kingston-based studio, thanks to one of his close friends. Little did Brooks know that internationally acclaimed Dancehall superstar, Bounty Killer would also appear at the studio session; watching Mavado voice for Junior Reid and instantly recognizing his potential as a singjay.

Amid controversy, Prodigal's new song blends in the ‘juggling’

pordigal_son_gospel_artiste_jamaica.jpgWhile one religious radio station is debating whether or not to play gospel artiste Prodigal Son’s latest single, Love Me Like This, the dancehall has embraced the song with religious zeal.

Love Me Like This is blared from the speaker boxes of many hardcore dancehall sessions and selectors confess that “it calm down the people dem and bring things back to a level”.

According to Kevin Genius, selector on Musical Riot and Mackies sound systems based in Yallahs, St Thomas, “This lickle tune yah bad. It have a Christian thing 'bout it because of the artiste who singing it … and you know,,, plenty Christians in the dancehall. But it also have that lovers thing that the people can relate to. So any way you take it, the tune bad.”

And Kevin Genius isn’t the only one singing it praises. Radio disc jocks have added Love Me Like This to their rotation and play it religiously. During the week, it is played in the secular juggling, while on Sundays, it is placed in the gospel mix. It is even requested on gospel programmes.

According to Prodigal Son, that’s exactly the way he envisioned it. His aim was always for the song to have cross-over appeal. But even he admits to being pleasantly surprised at how swiftly it has taken off in the dancehall.

Vybz Kartel's Legal Team Remains The Same Despite Claims of Being Axed

By Jodee Brown

vybz_kartel_head_shot_photo.jpgA day after reports suggesting that embattled Dancehall superstar, Vybz Kartel has new legal representation, Chris Tavares-Finson, one of the deejay’s lawyers has refuted the claims.

On Monday, it was revealed in an IRIE FM by Hannah Harris-Barrington, an English-Jamaican lawyer and human rights activist that she has officially taken over as the lead defence attorney for Vybz Kartel. Harris-Barrington intimated that Kartel asked her to become his new lawyer after stating that he no longer had legal representation; meeting with the artiste at the request of his family to discuss the proposition. She also claimed that two other lawyers will join her in representing the self-proclaimed “Worl’ Boss.”

On Tuesday afternoon, Chris Tavares-Finson, one of the lawyers involved in Kartel murder and drug-related cases, vehemently denied that he was sacked by the artiste whose real name is Adidja Palmer.

Tavares-Finson told IRIE FM, “As far as we’re concerned, there has been no changes whatsoever to his representation. We’re moving forward rapidly as far as the preparation of his case.”

The prominent lawyer also clarified that the legal team, consisting of his father, Tom Tavares-Finson and Michael Deans are also still legal representatives of the deejay and will proceed with the case.

However, Harris-Barrington maintained on Tuesday that she was legally authorized by Vybz Kartel to become his new lawyer. Also speaking with IRIE FM, Harris-Barrington insisted that she received two letters from Kartel clarifying that she’s officially his attorney-at-law; working on his behalf in his murder cases.

Vybz Kartel changes his legal team?

By Marc Parc
OutAroad.com Writer

vybz_kartel_court_house_gun_charge_murder.jpgEmbattled Dancehall superstar, Vybz Kartel will be seated beside a completely transformed defence team once he returns to court.

The internationally acclaimed artiste, currently in police custody with regards to two murder charges, reportedly sacked his star-studded legal team following his hearing on Thursday. The legal team consisted of prominent attorneys, Tom Tavares-Finson, Chris Tavares-Finson and Michael Deans, who also represents Kartel's protege, Shawn Storm who was also charged in one of Kartel's murder cases.

Kartel will now be represented by English-Jamaican lawyer, Hannah Harris-Barrington, who's the defence lawyer for fellow Dancehall superstar, Ninja Man, in his murder trial. Harris-Barrington revealed in an interview with IRIE FM on Monday that she was informed of Kartel's decision to change attorneys; complying with the request of the deejay's family to meet with the self-professed "Worl' Boss" before her services were secured. Additionally, she revealed that at least two other attorneys-at-law will join their defence team.

Kartel was charged with murder, conspiracy to murder and illegal possession of a firearm on October 3 in relation to the July shooting death of Barrington "Bossie" Burton, 27, of a St. Catherine address. Additionally, the Portmore Empire leader was charged with another murder on October 24; standing accused of killing Clive "Lizard" Williams, a dancer from Waterford, St. Catherine. Kartel's designer, Calvin "Moonie" Haye, entourage member, Cayro Jones and Portmore Empire singjay, Shawn Storm were also charged in Williams's murder. Each of the men was remanded into custody until October 2.

Kartel has been denied bail on several occasions since his initial arrest on September 29 at a New Kingston hotel where a small quantity of marijuana was found.

Michael Jackson's doctor, Conrad Murray, convicted

Linda Deutsch, Associated Press
sfgate

Conrad_Murray_michael_jackson_lawyer_convicted.jpgMichael Jackson's doctor was convicted Monday of involuntary manslaughter in the pop star's death for supplying the insomnia-plagued Jackson with a powerful anesthetic to help him sleep as he rehearsed for his big comeback.

Dr. Conrad Murray, 58, sat stone-faced as he heard the verdict that could send him to prison for up to four years and cost him his license to practice medicine. He was handcuffed and immediately led off to jail without bail to await sentencing Nov. 29.

The verdict marked the latest chapter in one of pop culture's most shocking tragedies - Jackson's 2009 drug-overdose death at age 50 as he was about to mount a series of heavily promoted concerts in London that he hoped would turn his career around after a slide prompted by child-molestation allegations and years of bizarre behavior.

Members of Jackson's family wept, and his mother, Katherine Jackson, said, "I feel better now." The crowd outside the courthouse erupted in cheers.

Defense attorney Ed Chernoff later said the verdict was a disappointment and would be appealed. Asked how Murray took the verdict, Chernoff said, "He's a pretty strong guy."

By Gil Kaufman

justin_bieber_pregnant_test_girl.jpgJust a few days after denying that he fathered a child with a fan last year, Justin Bieber has reportedly agreed to take a paternity test in the matter.

According to TMZ, Bieber, 17, has vowed to take a DNA test in two weeks when he returns from an overseas trip to prove that he is not the father of accuser Mariah Yeater's three-month old child. TMZ, citing unnamed sources "directly connected with Justin," reported that after Bieber takes the paternity test his lawyers plan to sue Yeater. The sources said that Bieber's lawyer, Howard Weitzman, reached out to Yeater's attorneys on Friday to confirm that the DNA test will take place and have already chosen the lab they will use. After the test takes place, the "Baby" singer's team will reportedly file suit, though TMZ did not specify what kind of legal action is planned. A spokesperson for Bieber could not be reached for comment on the TMZ report.

Bieber -- who was a big winner at the MTV Europe Music Awards on Sunday night with wins as Best Pop and Best Male -- appeared on the "Today" show on Friday to promote his just-released Christmas album, Under the Mistletoe, and addressed the situation. "I'd just like to say basically that none of those allegations are true," he told Matt Lauer. "I know I'm going to be a target, but I'm never going to be a victim."

Patrick "Roach" Samuels, former producer and long-time friend of prominent Dancehall artiste, Vybz Kartel, called out Don Corleon in a YouTube video released on Wednesday. Vegas to perform in Zimbabwe this weekend

International recording superstar Vegas arrived in Zimbabwe earlier this week, marking his third such trip to the African continent in the last couple of years.
mr.vegas_newyork.jpg"I always love performing in Africa, the last time I performed in Kenya, there were between 70,000 to 80,000 people in the stadium. I have also performed in Uganda in the past...Africa ah my place," he said.

He will be the headline act for a huge concert in the capital city of Zimbabwe this weekend.

In the meantime, the singjay's Certain Law video debuted at #1 on MTV Base Africa chart this week. Millions of viewers watch the MTV station in countries like Kenya, South Africa and Zimbabwe.

"I am proud that this happened because this is the first time that a dancehall artiste is doing it and it is also a first for me as an artiste. The response to the video has been phenomenal so far, people love the acting, and the comedic elements to the concepts of how males are acting different nowadays and adopting female characteristics in terms of their fashion choices. The actor Orville Hall did a good job bringing across the concept, and Terminal 4 Media did a great job directing it," he said.

The thought-provoking single "Certain Law" on the recently released Barbwire Riddim has been getting a lot of airplay and spins at the street dances all over Jamaica.

Mr. Vegas completed a successful Euroepan tour earlier this year where he performed in countries such as Sweden, Portugal, Italy, Belgium, Poland, Finland, Spain and Switzerland. He was also the main headline act at the Arthur's Day Live concert held on the GNS Grounds in Georgetown, Guyana in September.

By Marc Parc
OutAroad.com Writer

Sometimes, a musical journey finds it roots within a moment of clarity whilst exploring a separate career path. In the case of established Dancehall deejay, Timberlee, her rise to prominence as a musician was somewhat unexpected, but welcoming nonetheless.
Timber-lee Heaven was born on June 2, 1983 in Kingston, but raised in Mandeville, Manchester. She attended Belair High School in Manchester before migrating to Montreal, Canada to pursue her tertiary education at Concordia University; attaining a degree in psychology and child education.
timberlee_before_they_were_stars.jpg
Timberlee initially desired to become a vet while in college. However, she was somewhat intrigued by the music industry during her college years; writing and recording a song about herself and a friend for fun. The by-accident song was overheard by prominent Dancehall/Reggae producer, Kool Face, who immediately sent the song to internationally-acclaimed Dancehall/Reggae producer, Don Corleon, who's known fi producing the like of Sean Paul and Vybz Kartel, amongst several others.

Don Corleon was impressed by Timberlee's vocal abilities as well as her lyrical dexterity and, by 2003, she recorded her first ever mainstream single, via Corleon's Trifecta Riddim, with the single, Prada and Gucci. From then on, it was full speed ahead for Timberlee as she ventured on a musical adventure she never though would occur.

Timberlee also did recordings with Don Corleon for the popular French Vanilla and Mad Guitar Riddims, before meeting another veteran producer, Kunley McCarthy of the internationally-acclaimed group, Ward 21. Following her graduation from Concordia University, she met with McCarthy in Florida during her vacation in the American state. A hurricane met the two whilst spending time in Florida, but inadvertently drew inspiration from the powerful storm and soon penned what would be Timberlee's breakthrough single.

By Marc Parc
OutAroad.com Writer

Internationally-acclaimed Dancehall superstar, Adidja "Vybz Kartel" Palmer will have to wait a few more days until he's required to answer his most recent murder charge.
Kartel's second murder case, regarding the killing of a St. Andrew man this past August, was stood down in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Monday morning given that the co-accused in the case was not in attendance.

Presiding Resident Magistrate, Georgianna Fraser postponed the case until Kartel's designer/booking agent, Calvin "Moonie" Haye was brought before the courts by law enforcement officials. Haye appeared in the courtroom shortly thereafter, but RM Fraser decided to put of the case until Thursday November 3.
Haye, 23, was charged with murder in relation to the killing of Clive "Lizard" Williams in Havendale, St. Andrew. According to reports, it's alleged that Haye, along with Kartel and Kiro "Ray" Jones, killed Williams following a dispute over a missing, illegal firearm. Additionally, Kartel's mentor and Portmore Empire singjay, Shawn Storm, could jointly be charged for murder with the case as well as several other persons.

Kartel is due in court later this week as he faces charges of murder, conspiracy to murder and illegal possession of a firearm in connection with the shooting death of Barrington "Bossie" Burton, a businessman/promoter from Gregory Park, St. Catherine. He's also scheduled for a November 11th court appearance to face ganja possession charge stemming from his initial arrest on September 29 at a New Kingston hotel.

Pon Di Gaza We Sey! - Tad's Record Releases Limited Edition 'Pon Di Gaza' Album to Stores

pom_di_gaza_mi_seh_album_vybz_kartel.jpgDue to overwhelming demand, Tad's Record released Pon Di Gaza Mi Sey to retail stores on October 28th. Originally released digitally as Pon Di Gaza under Dancehall superstar Adidja 'Vybz Kartel' Palmer's then newly formed Adidjahiem Records in 2009, the album generated significant buzz among his loyal fan base, but failed to make a major impact due to the label's inexperience. With the Kartel 'boom' of the past two years, Tad's Record is once again giving music fans the 'ultimate Reggae experience' with this limited addition collector's item CD, in major retail chains and mom & pop stores on Friday.

Pon Di Gaza Mi Sey contains all of the original Pon Di Gaza tracks with some fresh new mixes and additional material. The majority of the songs were written in 2008 while Palmer was under investigation as a person of interest in a murder investigation - he was arrested, questioned, and released without charges. Meanwhile, Palmer's public persona Vybz Kartel was still and struggling to find his voice as an independent artist, after his unceremonious departure from the Bounty Killer-led Alliance. Soul-searching singles like "Tear Drops," "Can't Frame Me," "Yeah Though I Walk," "For Love," "Bail For Me" and the #1 single "Life We Living" were all written during a four-day stretch in his home's washroom.

"I was going through a lot of stuff at that time. Even in the music where Vybz Kartel was trying to find back himself, trying to reinvent myself and find back the perfect formula that I am using now," Palmer said to journalist Rob Kenner in September 2009. "No matter what else is happening in life, I always concentrate on music and use it to blow off steam - to keep sane."

Nicki Minaj Originally Wrote Rick Ross Single For Lil Wayne

By Rob Markman

nicky_minaj_lil_wayne_artistes_american.jpgRick Ross is hip-hop's self-proclaimed Bawse, but despite giving it up to Rozay on his new single, Nicki Minaj answers to another. While on the set of Birdman's "Y.U. Mad" video, the Female Weezy told MTV News that she originally wrote Ross' "You the Boss" for Young Money CEO Lil Wayne.

"You know what's interesting about that song," Minaj said while in character as her alter ego, the Female Weezy, "Nicki originally did that song for Wayne two and a half years ago."

The slow-rolling track, which is the first single off of Ross' upcoming God Forgives, I Don't, finds Minaj on the hook toasting the larger-than-life Rozay. "I'll do anything you say, anything, 'cause you the boss," Nicki sings softly.

Wayne never ended up using the track, but it seemed all too perfect for Ricky. "It was just lingering, and then she gave it to Rick Ross," Lady Wayne said. "I think it's hot."
