Dancehall Artiste Beenie Man retrieves U.S visa

By Marc Parc
OutAroad.com Writer

Internationally renowned Dancehall artiste, Moses "Beenie Man" Davis has gotten back his United States visa after being unable to travel to the country for the last 15 months.
beenie_man_visa_us.jpg
The "Go Go Club" deejay was one of four prominent Dancehall artistes who had their visas cancelled by the United States Embassy in Kingston back in April 2010; including artistes such Mavado, Bounty Killer & Aidonia. The move, made for reasons unknown, severely damaged both earning potential and marketability of Dancehall artistes on an international scale given they could not travel to the States to build their brands.

However, Beenie Man was issued & collected a ten year visa to the United States this morning. In a statement released on Friday evening, Beenie Man expressed gratitude to the United States government & the U.S embassy in Jamaica for what he claimed was their renewed faith in him by allowing him the ability to once again travel to the United States. Beenie also expressed his commitment decency and family values as core factors of Jamaican Dancehall/Reggae music.

Beenie Man's retrieval of a U.S visa comes just over three weeks after the aforementioned Mavado had been issued his United States visa. Mavado has since travelled to New York in an effort to promote his new label, Mansion Records as well as conducting a series of interviews & press conferences. Beenie previously intimated in February that he was re-applying for a U.S visa given that he’s working on a new album and needs access to the United States to complete certain projects.

Macka Diamond Sends Strong Message ‘All Dem A Talk’!!

macka_diamond_cow_foot_dance_feud.jpgNo one can deny that ‘Cowfoot’ and the dance move created for the song by popular Dancer Shelly Belly, rules the Dancehall. The song and dance has become viral, yielding repetitive ‘forwards’ and ‘pull up’ in every dance/party these days. However, in light of its popularity there is a small minority of persons who seem to be disappointed that the song has hit and have converged in an effort to try and derail what the people in the streets have approved. So the IRAWMA 2011 International Female DJ/Rapper of the Year, Macka Diamond dropped another track entitled, ‘All Dem A Talk’ on the Kool Like Dat riddim settle the matter.

The lyrics come across as a feisty backlash and reminder to those who seem to forget the successes she has had in the industry over the years. Directly responding to reports circulating in the media with regards to the ‘original creator’ of the Cowfoot Dance, Macka says, "Twitter is a baby" and when asked about what she really thinks about "Twitter's" twittering in the media she said “every upcoming artist try to attach themselves to a name fi get out deh so its nothing new, da little artist deh a do him ting. However a Shelly Belly created the Cowfoot Dance move a Maxfield so big up Maxfield people de ting tun up loud loud.”

For Macka Diamond and her crew it matters not now who created this dance move because it has become a craze among fans that literally wait until the joint is played to ‘buss a move.’ The international audience however seems to think otherwise as Macka Diamond has once again been voted Female DJ of the Year and Most Outspoken Female of the Year in the Music Industry Achievers Award, the ceremony is scheduled to commence on September 27, 2011.

Mavado leaving the Alliance?...Bounty Killer claims tension exists within group

By Marc Parc
OutAroad.com Writer

bounty_killer_mavado_photo.jpgVeteran Dancehall entertainer & leader of the Alliance crew, Rodney “Bounty Killer” Price has confirmed that there’s indeed a growing tension between his camp & Mavado’s Gully camp.

Bounty Killer made the admission during an interview on IRIE FM yesterday; insisting that the new song released by “Gully Squad” member, Chase Cross entitled, “Mash Up Everything,” could potentially cause a rift within the “Gulliance” & has stirred up even more tension between the Gully & Alliance affiliates. The song allegedly calls out the “Grung Gaad,” and other Alliance members with some of the song’s lyrics seemingly referring to the aftermath following the incident involving Mavado & his entourage outside Killer’s birthday party at the QUAD nightclub last month. Chase’s manager later insisted that his song was speaking to his true feelings; alluding to perceived negative comment made by Alliance following his friend’s death.

Bounty commented during the interview that he felt disrespected & offended by Chase’s song; even more so because he knows that that Chase Cross couldn’t record such a song without an official seal of approval from the Gully Squad’s founder, Mavado. Reportedly, the “War Lord” is encouraging Mavado to break his silence & elaborate on the recent tension between the Gully & Alliance camps. Mavado has yet to publicly address the song or talk about the issues between the two crews.

Montego Bay Police claim promoter affiliated with Mavado tried to buyout assault case

By Marc Parc

mavado_gangsta_for_life_police_assault.jpgMontego Bay police suggest that a man affiliated with popular Dancehall artiste, David "Mavado" Brooks attempted to buyout the assault case against the singjay on Tuesday. Reportedly, the man who’s currently being held in custody by law enforcement is a popular, Montego Bay promoter who has ties to the "Gully Side" artiste.

Sources close to the Montego Bay police intimated that they received information from said man & contacted the 51 year old complainant & his 17 year old son; the victims of the alleged assault. The promoter then made an offer to pay $500,000 to the complainants, in exchange for their word that they would not take their case against Mavado to court.

The complainants then met the popular promoter at the Fairview Shopping Centre in Bogue, Montego Bay but the promoter refused to make the exchange there; instead asking a taxi driver to drop him & the complainants at an undisclosed location in order to carry out the deal. However, the so-called taxi man was really an undercover officer who was part of an ongoing sting operation in the area. The promoter was then taken into custody along with the $500,000 he was offering, his white BMW along with a firearm. Further investigation into the matter is currently being made. No comment has been made from anyone in Mavado's camp regarding the incident.

Before they were stars: I-Octane

By Marc Parc
OutAroad.com Writer

ioctane_before_after_reggae.jpg

Byiome Muir, known more popularly as I-Octane has become one of Dancehall & Reggae music's hottest commodities. However, the "My Life" singer's journey to local & global musical success has been far from easy.

The Sandy Bay, Clarendon native had a natural born love for music; constantly belting out noises around his mother and siblings as a young child. As time evolved, Muir took his musical talents to school; looking to prove his versatility. Whether it was using the desks as drums, lyrical clashes with schoolmates, school functions or concerts, Muir's passion for music was evident. However, he initially didn't consider music as a career option despite his talents & focused on taking care of his single mother & sisters whilst pursuing his high school diploma.

Despite wanting to become an architect, Muir couldn't resist music & following graduation from high school, he vigorously pursued his desire to become a Dancehall sensation. At first, Muir performed hardcore Dancehall lyrics under the name "Richie Rich," & such lyrics grabbed the attention of Penthouse Records producer, Donovan Germaine. Whilst linking with Germaine, he spent time around some of the Reggae industry's biggest names like Tony Rebel & Buju Banton.

Tiana calls for Jamaican music industry to show more love to female artistes

"I sang a song titled “No Man Can't Talk Bad Bout Mi," which is a big song in several other countries but in Jamaica dem a try fi hold down the song."

Tiana_beach_princess_dancehall_female.jpgPR Jamaican Ent - Kingston: Up-and-coming female singjay, Tiana has a bone to pick with the Jamaican music industry for not giving females within the Dancehall & Reggae genres their due recognition. The "Princess of Dancehall," spoke in-depth via a press release; claiming that she's tired of the lack of respect shown to female artistes & that the Jamaican music industry is biased against them.

"The music industry needs to give more support to the female artistes in Jamaica. "When you turn on the radio, it's the same set of bulls; same as when you go to the Dancehall sessions, this industry is very bias towards females," Tiana intimated. She then explained, "Check it, most of the Riddims have a bag a man pon it and even when a female artiste manages to squeeze herself on the Riddim them play all the man dem songs and bench the female song majority of the time."

Tiana, who's known for hits such as "Gyal Mi Love Yuh" featuring Konshens on the Buss Out Riddim & "Dat Mi Want," on the Flirtation Riddim believes that female artistes are better than they're given credit for, even better than some of their male counterparts. "Mi flow sicka than nuff of the male artistes and is not brag mi a brag I am just simply telling the truth because most of the female artistes are way better," Tiana stated whilst adding, "Please show us some more love because it's not easy being a female artiste in this male dominated industry. Nicki Minaj brings successful Sumfest to close

By Marc Parc
OutAroad.com Writer

Reggae Sumfest 2011 closed out in style early Sunday morning following the second round of International Night at the Catherine Hall Entertainment Complex.

The night was headlined by Trinidadian-American rapper, Nicki Minaj who was the most anticipated performer on the Sumfest lineup card going into the event. Minaj, decked out in tiger-like colors, lived up to expectations by performing an energetic set; dishing out many of her hit songs such as "Your Love," "Moment 4 Life," "Dungeon Dragon, "Bottoms Up," amongst others. However, Minaj did stir up some controversy by dropping expletives during her set; something Jamaican artistes aren't allowed to do during their performances. Unlike I-Octane, who two nights earlier was told by law enforcement not to perform the weed anthem, "Puff It," Minaj enjoyed the freedom of performing her songs uncensored, to the delight of the thousands in attendance. She also tried her hand at Jamaican patois & showed off her dancing skills while amazing the crowd with her songs & stage presence. Some fans were critical of the fact that Nicki's set was somewhat short, but it was still effective.

Internationally acclaimed Reggae singer & Montego Bay native, Jah Cure also performed a memorable set; soothing the ears of listeners with his hits such as "King Of The Jungle," "Reflections" & "I Know Jah Jah Bless Me." He then engaged with the ladies in the audience by asking, "Girls can I ask you a question?" whilst taking his shirt off & asking them "Do you think I am sexy?" to a resounding yes from the female contingent in the crowd.

Chezidek's Stand Still On His Secret Enemies

Chezidek_stand_still_reggae_secret_enemy_outaroad.jpg

Jamaican reggae singer Chezidek has released a new single titled Stand Still. The track is the follow up single to his most recent hit Secret Enemy. The song is a poignant tale about the daily struggles of ordinary people. But despite the struggles and the hardships being faced, persons are encouraged to be strong and try to elevate themselves out of their situations.

Stand Still is currently enjoying solid rotation on most radio stations across Jamaica and in parts of Europe.

In a release to the media Chezidek outlined his reasons for tackling the issue of hardships that people face. "The daily struggle of people all around the world has been ignored by the respective leaders and it is about time that something is done about situations like this. In a nutshell the song is really saying that for poor people nothing happens. Everything is at a standstill for them. But at the same time they should stay strong despite the difficulties that they are experiencing because one day things will eventually get better," said Chezidek.

Gadiethz Wants To Get Rid of The Hustling In The Music Industry

Paul_Gadiethz_Peart.jpgStrong-minded aspirations and forward thinking are traits that set Paul Gadiethz Peart apart from most artistes. In his own words Gadiethz proclaim that he wants: "To improve the music industry in Jamaica from a hustling point of view to a corporate entity."

Diplo Prodcucer of Beyonce's Run The World - To Remix Mavado's Delilah

mavado_diplo_remix_delilah_reggae.jpgSuper Producer Diplo came to prominence behind the boards of M.I.A's Grammy-nominated Paper Planes single, before going on to work with the likes of Shakira, Kid Cudi, Bruno Mars, Snoop Dogg and Beyonce's recent Run the World (Girls) single. A huge fan of Jamaican music, his Major Lazer project - a melting pot of dancehall with a host of musical styles, featured a number of Jamaican acts. Diplo has now turned his beat-making skills to Mavado's smash single, Delilah (Mansion Records), giving it a "Dubstep" remix. Dubstep is a drum and bass-heavy electronic dance music genre that originated in London, UK.

"Mavado is a legend," expounds Diplo. "I tried a few things on the mix but this Dubstep style is really popping off. Mavado's voice lends itself so well to that deep bass sound. I want to introduce his Delilah song, a phenomenal record in its own right, and his whole vibe to a new audience. And of course its always a pleasure working with Alliance crew, they run the road."

Delilah Diplo Remix will be released via iTunes next Tuesday, to be followed soon by all other digital outlets.

"This Diplo Remix of Delilah takes the record into a whole other direction," said a representative of Mansion Records. "Since we dropped the single at the end of May, Delilah has been gathering great momentum locally but especially overseas where we have great hopes that the record will cross into other markets. We think this Dubstep remix will certainly help do that."

Rihanna and Drake: New Celeb Couple

In Celebs by KGaz

rihanna_drake_dating.jpgRihanna and Drake both have a hot R&B edge, and both use their catchy middle names as stage names. After on-and-off hookup rumors that date back to '09, we've all been waiting for confirmation that they're the entertainment industry's new item...and today there's new evidence that they are, in fact, making some sweet, sweet music together.

Back in 2009 after her split from Chris Brown, rumors surfaced to hint that Rihanna had had enough of healing her wounds and was getting down with Drake. The buzz was brief, however, because the Barbadan beauty quelched rumors by saying, "I definitely was attracted to Drake, but ... we didn't want to take it any further." The singer, 23, added, "It was at a really fragile time in my life, so I just didn't want to get too serious with anything or anyone at that time."

But last week, nearly two and a half years after her split from bully-boyfriend Chris Brown, Rihanna admitted that she's totally back in the dating game...and having fun being a player. "Men are like hunters; they like the chase," she told Cosmo UK. "So you have to keep 'em guessing. Actually, I'm like that too. I get bored quickly."

Tanya Stephens Releases Video for Ghett'a Life Movie Soundtrack

Tanya_Stephens_ghetta_life_video_movie.jpgTanya Stephens, the "Lyrical Queen of Dancehall" who wrote the title track for the soundtrack for the full feature film, Ghett'a Life, has just completed the video for the single. The highly anticipated film, which has already copped two awards at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival, opens Friday, June 29 in theaters island wide.

Catalysitic words emanate from the chorus of the title track for new Jamaican film Ghett'a Life, from the Reggae visionary, Tanya Stephens, who has written an analytic and thought-provoking tune that closely matches the groundbreaking storyline of the film.

So let the rain fall, and let the wind blow, Cause after the rainfall must come a rainbow,
I keep dreaming of a better life, cause me must get a life.

So reads the chorus of the tune, which echoes the essence of Ghett'a Life, which is a action drama which tells the story of overcoming obstacles despite social and economic obstacles.

Tanya's involvement in Ghett'a Life was fitting, as she has penned some of the most memorable and touching Reggae tracks for her growing worldwide audience. It was only appropriate that she would team up with the talented pool of people who put together one of Jamaica's most authentic and touching films. The lyrics are compelling, loaded with vivid imagery and biting social commentary about aspects of Jamaican life. The narrative in Tanya's tune is almost a mirror image of the social commentary of the film.

Dancehall recording artiste Bramma was invited along to perform at the event. Bramma said after his performance he was whisked away to his hotel because the crowd got a bit overly excited in an effort to greet him and while leaving the venue saw persons running behind the vehicle transporting him shouting, “Bramma, Bramma, Bramma.”

New Magnum Royalty Chosen By Jamaica - Hurricane & Nioma

magnum_kings_queen_winners_hurricane_NIOMA.jpg

After an extended 16 weeks of electrifying competition, last Saturday Magnum Kings and Queens of Dancehall crowned its 4th King and Queen: King Hurricane and Queen Nioma. The talent show winners, who beat off some 28 finalists to advance, snatched for themselves $1 million, a single and a video by a noted director and producer, along with a Samsung Galaxy Tab courtesy of Digicel.

For Nioma, assuming the throne wasn't the easiest task, as Central Village fearless attitude Lady, with ever-pumping lyrics and props that never seemed to fail, Yabalisious, put up a proper fight. Nioma defended herself, belching soothing melodies and conscious lyrics, even shocking patrons in her clash.

For the males it was a fight between Hurricane, a man with energy comparable to an atmospheric wind-and-pressure system at a category 5 level and Specialist, the 'A-grade hustler', whose lyrical poignancy earned him the ' in-the-streets' title for "phone card, phone card, banana, banana chips".

"Got 2 Luv U" will appear on Sean's upcoming fifth studio release, which will drop sometime toward the end of the year via Atlantic Records. It will be the popular reggae artist's first release since 2009's Imperial Blaze, which debuted at number one on the U.S. Billboard Top Rap Albums chart.

Imperial Blaze also made its way up to No. 12 on the Billboard 200 chart, despite the fact the album's singles ("Hold My Hand," "So Fine," "Press It Up") underperformed on the charts.

Cha'Maine makes a mark with 'Work It'

chamaine_reggae_singer.jpgNew York-based recording artiste Cha'Maine is on the verge of a major breakthrough with her single, Work It, which has been put in rotation on most major radio stations locally and on urban radio in the tri-state area.

The disc jockeys in New York and Jamaica have responded really favourably to Work It because of its unique sound, soca, reggae and soul, a delightful mish-mash of different sounds and cultures, plus I am getting good feedback online," she said in a release.

The favourable response has prompted her to decide to come to Jamaica to shoot videos for the singles, Work It, and the R & B-flavoured Promise, a soulful gem of a song that has become a favourite song of newlyweds because of its promise of fidelity, loyalty and undying love.

"A couple of my friends and fans have used Promise at their weddings and the word just got out via Facebook and so every now and then, I get reports that the song has become somewhat of a wedding & re-commitment song," Cha'Maine said in a release.

Ryno Insults Popcaan and Vybz Kartel in New Song

blak_ryno_kartel_popcaan_diss_walk_and_talk.jpgResurgent deejay Ryno since exiting the Portmore Empire has come under immense pressure from various sects in an attempt to oust him from the industry.

Leading the charge is Ryno's former protege Popcaan and then mentor Vybz Kartel, both of whom have failed in their quest to silence the deejay despite a plethora of diss tracks and verbal insults.

However, it appears the Garrison recording artiste refusal to yield has spawn into a recording session that sees him venting his frustration in a new track titled "Walk and Talk". Based on lyrical content the song appears to be aimed at addressing the infamous 'sell out accusation" leveled against him by the Gaza outfit.

In the track, Ryno also takes a series of swipes at both Vybz Kartel and Popcaan with the lines:

"bwoy yuh lucky mi nuh deh bout
since yuh skull hot den step out...
badman neva neva sell out..
and anyweh mi see yuh is a shell out..
poppi yuh badness green like banana..
bet yuh stamma-a when yuh see the bomma-a
run an guh hide yuh head unda wig like yuh fada"

Getting To Know Devon Jorge

Devon_Jorge_dancehall_reggae_jamaica.jpgDevon Jorge is one of the most promising, conscious and inspirational singers and songwriters to have emerged in recent times.

Originally from the parish of St. Ann in Jamaica, he attracted attention upon the release of his debut single “Cold Heart”. But that was just a taste of what was to come.

He has come a far way since his days of working as a waiter. However he soon realized that the job was a bit overwhelming and later on worked as a bartender. While honing his skills as a bartender at the piano bar and lounge, it became evident that his shift was the main entertainment segment each evening.

He utilized his singing ability to impress his co workers and customers. It was encouragement from friends and co workers that initially led him on his musical path. He would later embark on
formal training in playing piano before migrating overseas.

Rihanna Songs Are Really Expensive

rihanna_man_down_cost_video.jpg

How much does it cost to make a hit single? NPR decided to deep-dive into Rihanna's "Man Down" as a case study, and what they found was predictably eye-popping: When you add the costs of pulling together a songwriters' camp (which, in Rihanna's case, is about $200,000), and covering expenses for the songwriter, producer, vocal producer, mix recording, and promotion, a single song can easily cost over a million bucks. "The reason it costs so much is because I need everything to click at once," explains Ray Daniels, who manages the "Man Down" songwriters. "You want them to turn on the radio and hear Rihanna, turn on BET and see Rihanna, walk down the street and see a poster of Rihanna, look on Billboard, the iTunes chart, I want you to see Rihanna first. All of that costs." And no doubt, Usher appreciates Ri-Ri's expensive leftovers. [NPR]

Jahdore making waves with This Love is Over

jahdore_reggae_artiste.jpgSinger, songwriter and musical arranger JahDore has been creating waves with his current single, the very poignant and thought provoking This Love Is Over. Produced by Andrew Myers for Heartcour Productions/Rountoun Music Production and UIM Records, the song has taken over the airwaves with a bang. It is currently number sixteen on the Jamaica Music Countdown Top 25 Reggae Singles chart.

Another single Harlem Blunts equally showcases JahDore’s lyrical prowess and versatility as an artiste.

This Love Is Over is a witty tale of a relationship gone bad. It tells the story of a man who has been faithful to his significant other and who makes sacrifices beyond the call of duty to keep his family together. However in the short term, the flashiness and swag of another man, managed to catch the attention of his significant other, thus ending their relationship.

Harlem Blunts is the opposite. A playful party-flavoured track which helps to create a vibe inside a nightclub or at a party or session.

What's new

Transformers' Climbs to $97.5M, Aims for Records

By Associate Press
abcnews

transformers_movie_photo_2011.jpg

The latest "Transformers" sequel might set some revenue records over Fourth of July weekend.

"Transformers: Dark of the Moon" has $97.5 million in the bank at the domestic box office since opening Tuesday night. Distributor Paramount estimated Saturday that the movie could top the holiday weekend records held by "Spider-Man 2" and "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse."

"Spider-Man 2" holds the three-day record for the Fourth of July with $88.2 million from Friday to Sunday. Paramount says "Dark of the Moon" should come in about $10 million above that.

The studio also says "Dark of the Moon" could finish slightly ahead of the five-day record $157.6 million that "Eclipse" took in from Wednesday to Sunday over the holiday weekend last summer.

But today's admission prices are much higher than they were for 2004's "Spider-Man 2," while 60 percent of business for "Dark of the Moon" came from 3-D tickets, which cost a few dollars more than regular 2-D screenings.

R&B Star Teairra Mari Goes Dancehall With Mr. Vegas

mr_vegas_Teairra_Mari_reggae_dancehall.jpg

While J-Lo, Rihanna, and Bruno Mars have opted for Reggae and Dancehall inspired pop music tracks for their latest radio hits, Rhythm & Blues singer Teairra Mari boldly went to the core of Jamaica's music scene for the racy "Pum Pum Shorts" single. Dancehall superstar Mr. Vegas paired the pop music siren with Soul Train's Reggae Artist of the year Gyptian, for a drum and bass filled track that is 100% Dancehall. The "Pum Pum Shorts" video debuted on World Star Hip Hop on Friday, racking up over 5 million views in 3 days. "Pum Pum Shorts" will be available on iTunes in the coming weeks.

"Pum Pum Shorts," produced by Rohan 'Snowcone' Fuller, the mastermind behind Sean Paul's Billboard-topping platinum hit "Temperature," is a spicy single dedicated to what the urban dictionary defines as "extremely short shorts - short enough to be panties." The video features women of all shapes and sizes strutting their stuff in uber tiny shorts, with Mr. Vegas rapping "me love gyal inna pum pum shorts, look how it a show off them phat parts," while Teairra Mari, clad in tiny black leather shorts and dominatrix-style top sings "I put 'em on, you can take 'em off." The chorus, sung by Gyptian whose single "Hold Yuh" featuring Nicki Minaj peaked at #3 on Billboard Heatseekers chart in 2010, is reminiscent of the Screechy Dan and Red Fox 1991 street anthem "Pose Off."
