Collin Hines & Linkon Had The Patrons Rocking From 12 To 12

Linkon_Collin_Hines_selector.jpgCaptain Collin Hines alongside fast rising selector Linkon had the Appleton 12 To 12 patrons dancing like crazy on the beach to a mixture of 90s Dancehall and Reggae while teasing the "party animals" with a few of the latest anthems that's currently rocking the airwaves and the party circuits.

With the pulsating vibes that was created earlier by Collin Hines and Linkon during their first set they ended up had to take the spotlight once more as the 12 To 12 promoters requested for them to close the show knowing that they would be able to complete the patrons’ musical satisfaction.

Linkon next major stops will be at the anticipated Yush and Yesterday along with Fame FM's DJ Marvin. He will also be a guess selector at the weekly Magnum Swagga Thursdays event.

Exciting performances at Western Fest

ioctane-dean-frazer-tarrus-riley.jpg

The first staging of Western Fest (the Ice Breaker) turned out to be a huge success, as thousands of patrons converged on the lawns of the scenic Rhodes Hall Plantation Resort last Saturday night, to witness what turned out to be a very exciting event.

Although the event got off to a bit lat, patrons were not the least bit upset as they were kept entertained by the musical juggling of Hype Zone disco. Show time began in a rather unusual manner for a stage show, as Merrick the Magician who was not originally on the lineup, was invited on stage about 11:30 pm, by MC Dwight Findley for a brief but very entertaining performance.

The first segment of the show also featured several artistes from Hanover including Imani, Mr Groove and Lighta Secret who all did well. This segment also featured a very talented young US Rapper who goes by the name BJ American Idol; he connected well with the audience as he waxed some very catchy rhymes over heavy Hip Hop beats.

However Timmi Burrell was clearly the best act in this segment, the Negril based singer was smooth in his delivery as he closed off the first segment of the show, performing songs such as Friend In Need, Make Doh, Gi Mi A Ounce and Dark Shades White Tee. During his performance he was joined on stage by stable mate, Vengeance who made his presence felt with Pat It Dung and Weed Anthem.

Shawn Storm hits #1 on local charts

shawn_storm_chart.jpgShawn Storm's My Life roared into the pole position of the Jamaica Music Countdown charts last week, capping a meteroic rise of the longtime Portmore Empire member.

He dedicates the success to his 66 year-old mother Carlene Campbell and his mentor Vybz Kartel.

"My mother, Carlene Campbell, inspired me to write this song, and all the experiences in the song are true, it’s really an autobiography and I poured my heart into it, Vybz Kartel endorse it to the universe oh!, everybody say ah the baddest song mi ever do and it’s real, it ah talk about my life inna real life, mi feel proud fi sieve out da number one ya," he said.

In this booming hard-knock anthem, Storm proves that he's unafraid to challenge himself or his peers, and certain lines are bonafide tear-jerkers such as when he deejays that "all now mi no fix mi mother eye", a reference to his mother who is legally blind because of the glaucoma which has afflicted both her eyes.

"Mi just ah work hard so my career can grow from strength to strength," Storm said.

He is booked for several shows this Christmas including the Digicel road show, a Christmas Day show in Guyana, and concerts in Antigua, and St. Kitts.

Barbee, Gramps, Mr. Vegas walk the red carpet at Soul Train Awards

barbee_anita_baker_gramps_soul_train_award.jpgReggae/dancehall acts Barbee, Gramps and Mr. Vegas were among the international stars who rubbed shoulders on the dazzling red carpet at the recent Soul Train Awards, held in Atlanta, USA.

Whereas both Gramps and Mr. Vegas were nominees, female reggae singer, Barbee was in Atlanta doing some recording sessions and had linked up with Gramps at a Soul Train pre-party.

"Gramps said that as Caribbean people we should really stick together, so since I was already going to the event, we decided that I would be his ‘date’ for the night,” Barbee said, laughing and adding that “it was a lot of fun. Gramps is cool to hang with.”

Also a part of the ‘Caribbean’ contingent was soul singer India.Arie, who visited Jamaica earlier this year to receive a special Friend of Reggae award from the Excellence in Music and Entertainment Awards (EMEs).

It was India who introduced the group to R&B sensation, Anita Baker, who was a special honoree at the Soul Train Awards.

“That was really a special moment. Meeting a legend like Anita Baker … just shaking her hands is an inspiration,” Barbee declared.

Singer G-Whizz heads to Barbados this weekend for a charity concert in aid of the victims of a deadly Tudor Street fire.

The fire which claimed the lives of six persons in September aroused the ire and pity of thousands, as a result, a charity concert was arranged. One On One OutAroad With Drenz

ONE ON ONE OUTAROAD

My faithful peeps, One-On-One is taking a new approach OutAroad (no pun intended) and your girl Shani is expanding my portfolio and including in it one-on-one moments with persons of influence within our community. For the first issue in this a new dawning, you will get a one-on-one opportunity with the owner and fashion designer for the clothing line DRENZ, which has been buzzing since last summer. Hailing from Portmore, Check it out.

drenz_clothing_fashion_jamaican.jpg

Setting: Under the Gazebo at UWI Juicy Patties
Interviewer: Shanique Campbell AKA Shani
Interviewee: Drenz

Real Name: Richard Campbell

Age: 29+

OutAroad: What’s the story behind Drenz, the name?
Richie: It actually started with a group of us in a crew, 9 of us. We were searching for a name to call ourselves and we originally came up with the name Adrenaline. We planned a party and decided that we wanted to create our own line of clothing for the crew and to promote the party. Whenever we went out, people would always tell us that they loved the clothing and ask where they could get them from. Over time we shortened the name from Adrenaline to just DRENZ.

OutAroad: What type of clothing does Drenz comprise of?
Richie: Right now it’s all men outawear; jackets, vests

OutAroad: From Last year’s Christmas season into this year, there has been a buzz with your line of clothing. How do you feel about it?
Richie: I am extremely humbled by the effect but it is minute to where I wanna be. We can definitely push for more and for the effect to be more widespread.

OutAroad: How difficult was it for you to start this clothing line?
Richie: It was real hard believe me and I have to thank Shaky for all his support over the years. My mother use to throw out the clothes. I was in my final year in business at UTECH and I remember I used the money to buy cloth to make clothes. So I went from accounting to fashion designer and with that came a lot of financial difficulty. In addition to that I am from a very humble background so that made it even worse.

Etana Set To Release New Album And Digital EP

etana_free_expression_album.jpg

Reggae singer/songwriter sensation Etana returns with her highly anticipated sophomore album Free Expressions in February 2011 from VP Records. Before her new studio effort hits the shelves, VP Records is releasing a digital EP entitled Free, which features three of her current hits that are also included on the album. The digital EP drops on December 7, 2010, to satisfy fans during the wait for the full-length album.

Etana deems this second album Free Expressions because she adamantly refuses to be constrained by approach or lyrical content. "This album was produced a little differently from the first, most of the sessions were less planned so there is more of a free vibe," she reveals. "I just wanted to express myself freely, write just what I want without thinking too hard about what anyone's opinion would be - just doing music as I feel to do it."

Fans are so consistently enthralled by Etana's music that several tracks from Free Expressions have already topped the charts in Jamaica and reggae charts internationally, including "Free," "August Town" and "Mockingbird." The album's first official single "Free" was produced by Kemar "Flava" McGregor and offers a somber reflection of a prolonged period of struggle endured by the artist. Its second single "Heart Broken" is equally as heartfelt with London-based producers Curtis Lynch, Jr. and Gussie Clarke at the helm.

Jay-Z is no devil worshipper

By Luther Campbell

Uncle Luke, the man whose booty-shaking madness once made the U.S. Supreme Court stand up for free speech, gets as nasty as he wants to be for Miami New Times. This week, Luke debunks rumors spread on blogs and YouTube that Jay-Z is down with the illuminati.

jay_z_devil_worshipper_photos.jpgPeople who depict Jay-Z as a devil-worshipping member of a secret society known as the illuminati are whack. Hov - as they call him - has constantly battled rumors he rose to the top by making a deal with Satan. Recently, he told website Hip-Hop Wired: "When people have a certain amount of success, it needs to be explained in a way other than hard work and talent and being blessed." He is absolutely on point.

All Jay-Z has done is work his ass off. Back in the day, he was on my pay-per-view program Luke's Freakshow. At that time, he was hanging with Biggie Smalls and observing how the late rapper dealt with fame. He learned from other rappers' mistakes, and that's why he has lasted so long in the business.

Jay-Z is a loyal guy who is way ahead of the game - you don't see him starting beef with other rappers or going to jail for stupid shit. But because he is so successful, and married to a very successful and famous woman (Beyoncé), people search for something screwed-up to say about him.

Angele Smith Is Falling To Pieces

With a growing catalogue of high quality and infectious tunes, Angele Smith is clearly a rising star.

angele_smith_singer_male.jpg

Rising musical star Angele Smith has teamed up with Washroom Entertainment to create one of his best songs yet. The song dubbed 'Falling to Pieces' was recently recorded on the Bad Suh Riddim for ace producer Conroy Forte and is currently garnering rave reviews.

Angele delivers Falling to Pieces with vocal perfection, moving out of his musical comfort zone trumpeting a cry which identifies with the common man, while at the same time revealing some of the struggles the Westmoreland native has had to face over the years.

Angele Smith is known for his smooth sexually charged lyrics but, the change in message shows that he is not a one track artiste and has numerous styles and flavours in his arsenal of lyrics. Angele says that writing the song came natural to him as the issues it address are struggles that he, and friends of his, have experienced. “I grew up very poor, a nuff time mi nuh have money fi tek bus go studio or even buy food. People si mi smiling all the time an doh realise di sorta tings I have to deal with, just like most Jamaicans. But, although things tough we cyaan mek dat keep wi down, yu si mi”.

Beenie Man drops riddim project, "Beenie Man and Friends"

beenie_man_bodygaurd.jpg

Deejay Beenie Man, buoyed by the success of his number one hit singles, Rum & Red Bull and I’m O.K., has tackled a new ambitious musical project which he hopes will help to re-define his legacy as a leader and innovator in the world of dancehall.

Beenie Man has enlisted the help of his superstar friends on the musical project he has dubbed “Beenie Man & Friends” and the result has been eight great combination singles, each featuring Beenie Man, on a bouncy dancehall beat.

“No other artiste in the business has ever tried anything like this before. I am writing, arranging and co-producing every song on the riddim, and I am also performing on every song on the riddim,” a proud Beenie Man said. “The only thing I haven’t done is build the riddim, that was done by Danny Browne.”

The project features the talents of artistes such as Khago, D’Angel, Ding Dong, Fambo, Deva Bratt, Kantana, Versatile, Cee Gee and Laden.

“I plan to shoot a video for the single called Time of My Life with D’Angel, and a medley video with all the others, I already have the concept in my head, it is going to be sick,” he said, laughing.

This audacious project is the germ of an idea that Beenie Man had years ago, but he got the raging fever last month and within a week, and a couple of urgent Blackberry pings and messages, he had pulled the critical elements together.

"This song is a female empowerment song. But then again, it's not specific to just women. It speaks about flying, soaring high in the face of every single solitary adversity that comes your way. I speak about how the media has attempted to box me in and how that has made me feel suffocated."

Rihanna Gives Lady Gaga A Run For Her Money

By Gavin Martin

rihanna_loud_album.jpgShe is an artist who has learned to grow up fast. During her half-decade in the limelight, the 22-year-old Bajan bombshell's image has developed at an ever accelerating pace.

Now, with Loud, her lust-filled fifth album, Rihanna moves closer to fulfilling her ambition - stated early in her career - to become "the black Madonna".

"I like things strong and edgy," she smiles.

"I don't like things that are expected."

The teenybop, carnival reggae princess who appeared on her tentative 2005 debut Music Of The Sun seems a world away from the flame-haired hip-hop temptress who strides, and writhes, her way through Loud. In a pop world driven into a hormonal frenzy by Lady Gaga and her pal Katy Perry, Rihanna is clearly ready to compete.

Of course, much has happened between then and now. She left her Caribbean home to find the fame she dreamed of while growing up in Barbados in the shadow of an absentee crack-addicted father. In America, Jay-Z spotted her determination right away.

Mission accomplished as Future Fambo delivers great performances in Canada

fambo_canada_show_artiste.jpgDefinitely the 'Comeback Kid for the year 2010', deejay Future Fambo's career is moving from strength to strength. With his fan base growing since the release earlier this year of his Seanizzle-produced hit Rum And Red Bull, (featuring Beenie Man), Fambo's demand has spiked.

The deejay, known for his energetic on-stage presence, recently returned to Jamaica from a two-show trip to Canada, where he had fans in frenzy as he worked the stage like a pro. Dubbed Reggaelution, the shows were staged by PFB Entertainment on October 29 inside the Government Entertainment Complex in Toronto and the following night in Montreal. Both shows were well supported and kudos to the promoters for proper stage management and good time control.
Of course, Fambo's international hit Rum And Red Bull proved to be a favourite mix, despite the fact that the Doctor Beenie Man wasn't there in person to sing the hook. However, Future Fambo's delivery was on point and, as the self-proclaimed Drunken Master of the Dancehall, he delighted patrons with his infectious Swaggaholic style and song of the same name.

Also a hit with the Canadian massive was the single Pop Bottle and Fambo made sure to work it with the crowd. Before he exited centrestage, the deejay called on stage Supa Hype, much to the delight of patrons who enjoyed the extra treat.

Here in Bangalore as part of a four-city tour across India the 20-year-prodigy had the crowd screaming for more as he performed to a packed audience at Hard Rock Café in a concert organise by Bacardi.

“Singing since I was six, I found life taking me into the realm of music and it was no surprise that my family supported me all through,” he recalled. The young boy wonder also had the music vibe in his blood being the grandson of reputed Jamaican reggae producer Lawrence Lindo.

Serani gets HOT with Skip to My Luu

serani_ding_dong_skip_to_my_luu.jpgSerani's career continues on an upward path as his dancefloor smash "Skip to My Luu," featuring Ding Dong and Razz n Biggy, has been added to daytime rotation on America's #1 radio station HOT 97 in New York.

Its a phenomenal feat for Serani as its his third single to get added to mainstream daytime radio in the US in the last 2 years, following on from the Billboard-charting No Games and She Loves Me.

"it really is all about hard work," said Serani. "I've been putting in the groundwork over the last two years, constantly being out there on the road. We've been working Skip for a while at radio and now its paying off. HOT 97 always shows Reggae and Dancehall a lot of love and kudos to them for introducing Dancehall records to the mainstream."

Skip to My Luu is a fun track based off the dance of the same name that was #1 in Jamaica earlier this year and still a staple at dances across the globe. It crossed into American clubs over the last couple of months and was then picked up by US radio. Skip to My Luu was produced by top tier production trio DASECA.

Fifth Element Records hosted a highly successful ‘Culture in the City’ event over the Halloween weekend in the United States. The two day celebration, which marked the tenth anniversary of the successful recording outfit, kicked off with the first event being held on Saturday, October 30 at the C-Pac in Brooklyn. The second concert was held the following night at Macedonia Hall in Mount Vernon, New York.

While the first concert in Brooklyn failed to attract a huge crowd, there were high energy performances from all the artistes. However, on the second night, a packed venue full of cheering fans at the Macedonia Hall greeted the artistes and they did not disappoint.

Veteran singer John Holt was in scintillating form, wowing the audience with a steady stream of hit songs from his superb catalogue. Members of the audience jumped out of their seats to dance to huge hits like "Stealing", "Love I Can Feel", “Ali Baba”, the pro-marijuana ‘Police in Helicopter’ and "If I Were A Carpenter". After performing for about 15 minutes, he even paused to take requests, belting out ‘Wear You to the Ball’, a song from his stint with the Paragons, a capella much to the delight of the female fans.

One Love From Singer I-Octane

ioctane_jamaica.jpg“Bredda me love you ; sister me love you; Mama me love you …” reggae singer I-Octane croons in his latest single which speaks, not just to his love for family and friends, but in true I-Octane style, also embraces his “enemies”.

Entitled One Love, the single is set to become I-Octane’s theme song to carry him through to the rest of this year and into 2011 and seems a natural sequel to the lessons learnt from his monster hit, Lose A Friend. Whereas Lose A Friend laments the death of someone closedear, One Love declares the importance of telling the person ‘I love you’ because” mi nuh know when Pharisees a go dun dem”.

According to the singer, he felt compelled to write these lyrics and the lyrics just poured out. “Love is an awesome feeling and if you believe in word, sound and power, you will understand the importance of saying the words ‘I love you’ out aloud,” I-Octane says of the single One Love.
“Love is something we can never get too much of or get tired of hearing … as long as there is sincerity to the words,” he added.

Buju Banton Retrial Set For February

by Latifah Muhammad

buju_banton_cocaine_trial.jpgReggae star Buju Banton's retrial for buying cocaine from a police officer has been moved to February. U.S. District James Moody, originally scheduled Banton's trial for December, granted a motion by the defense to move the case to February but has yet to announce a specific date. Moody declared a mistrial last month after jurors were not able to reach a verdict on the case.

Banton, born Mark Myrie, was arrested last December and accused of conspiring to purchase five kilos of cocaine from an undercover officer in Sarasota, Fla. He has been held without bail ever since, but is hoping to be let free pending the beginning of the new trial.

While prosecutors maintain that he is guilty of attempting to purchase the contraband, Banton's lawyer claims that he is the victim rather than the criminal, siting the sting operation as an entrapment conspiracy, set-up by the U.S. government. "In addition to refusing to disclose the identity, the government has refused to identify the prior cases in which he has been involved, the outcomes of those cases, the amount of money he has earned making cases for the government, or even the amount he has been paid (or expects to be paid) in this case," Banton's lawyer argued in a previous statement.

If released, Banton is hoping to spend the holidays with his family.
