A representative for dancehall star MAVADO has brushed off criticism from Jamaica's tourism minister about a cameo in rapper DRAKE's new video, after taking issue with his portrayal of a gun-toting local gangster.
Drake shot the promo for Find Your Love in the Jamaican cities of Kingston and St. Andrew, and follows the hip-hop star as he pursues a woman romantically linked to a gang leader named Puffy, played by Mavado.
The video ends with Drake being kidnapped and held at gunpoint, and bullets can be heard being fired as the screen fades to black.
Jamaica's Minister of Tourism Edmund Bartlett protested the content of the video last week (ends14May10), expressing his disappointment at the apparent link between the Caribbean country and gun culture.
He said, "Care has to be taken by all, including our creative artists, in portraying images of our destination and people. Gun culture, while not unique to Jamaica, is not enhancing (the island’s image)."
But Mavado's manager, Julian Jones-Griffith, has defended the star, insisting the promo's storyline simply borrows from past headlines in the Jamaican media.
He says, "The concept that they came up with, where did they come up with that? If Mavado did not do it, another Jamaican actor would have done it."

People the video is just a video, it actually shows some nice vibes of Jamaica and young people dancing in Kingston clubs and streets - The story is a love story with a twist - I am sure its not reflecting what is currently going on in Jamaica. By the way there are lots of videos made in USA AND feature guns, killings and dead bodies - Tupac - ghetto gospel, brenda got a baby and Wyclef/Mavado - Hold on to name a couple off hand. Is the minister saying the USA shouldn't allow these videos because they don't show the country in a good light. ITS THE TRUTH THATS WHAT GOES ON - Lets not get fooled by those politicians that are in bed with the said gunmen/dons/gangsters whatever you want to call them for their own gains.

I must say that I agree with the two individuals whom have commented thus far. However, I must also say that the minister of tourism also has a point in his rhetoric. Jamaica is a beautiful country and we can no longer hide the fact that violence and other criminal activities has become too rampant in our society.Everyone is now vulnerable, not only our brothers and sisters living in the inner city communities. As Jamaicans we all must take a stand and play our part in ridding our society of the ills of crime and violence; even if this means taking a simple stand by the artistes not engaging in music videos that display images of these said problems that are suffocating our society. It is also important to note that the manager of dancehall artiste Movado have made an important point; that if the artiste had not taken part in the video an actor would have taken on such role. However, what we should be more keen on, is that when these said artistes sing these songs that vividly portrays images of violence and let more carrying out a role play in the videos, it only paints a negative picture to the world at large. Not only that, while an actor may have taken on the role, he or she may not be a popular image in society, while an artiste on the other hand may have developed such popularity on the international market that he/ she no longer represents himself, but his country as well. There is no doubt that many who may take the time to read my input, may argue that other international artistes do the same in other countries, however, we must remember that this is our country we are taking about, 'puss and dog don't have the same luck'. This is not only harmful to the reputation of our country, but for every Jamaican. It is disgraceful already that some of our brothers and sisters cannot get a job because of their home address, but will be even worse if in the future this should be extended to our citizens not be given an equal opportunity in the international market because our nationality is Jamaican. There is recent evidence of such stand being taken by the United States of America, although I strongly disagree to their stance but that is a different topic by itself. We all need to take a stand in ridding our society from the ills of crime and violence and at the same time be careful of the image we portray of ourselves to the world and 'Mr. minister of tourism' this should not be only for the benefit of the tourism product of the country.

What would you all have to say if it was made in Trinidad, Barbados, Mexico or Cuba? These places could all look alike, it's only because you were told it was filmed in JA. Not a bad vidoe at all, well done, just it's timing was bad.

come on, wat about hollywood movies 2 hours long showing killin raping drugs and all kind of crap that we all watch and say a good movie that we show in jamaican theaters .but a music video three munites long is such a big deal.all we worry about is tourism, who benefit? not the average jamaican because all tourism dollars are paid back to foreigh investors in the us and uk.they $4000 a weak for peoplew to clean tourist dutty sheets and rooms and think dat a help jamaica memba all the hotels r owned by foreigners.music videos r the least of the problem.i dont see any artist sending guns into jamaica, artist use their talent to survive because govt.dont care about ghetto people until election
