Jamaica’s beautiful beaches, relaxing vibe, exciting attractions and vibrant nightlife have continued to make it a top Spring Break destination. Both Visitors and Locals alike will have one more reason to celebrate Spring Break 2010 when the annual Soul Rebellion concert series kicks off in Negril. This marks the fifth year for the annual concert series, which is teaming up with the Jungle, Traveller’s Beach Resort and the Negril Education and Environment Trust (N.E.E.T), Tingalaya’s Retreat on the West End, Dean Wallace, and the recently held Heineken Red Star Concert Series which features Shaggy, Elephant Man, Chino, Tiana, Laden and Timmi Burrell live in concert with DJ Rusti, DJ Shine and Wicked Son.

The next installment occurs on March 20th, with performances by TOK, Fivestar, and Nellie Roxx, in addition to two NY Hip Hop Mcs, NSR and Question, drawing a circle around the cultural exchange between the United States and Jamaica which produced Reggae and produced Hip Hop. Cultural parties are being held at Traveller’s Beach Resort on March 9th and 16th where the focus is put on Jamaica’s culture as it has impacted the world stage, Rastafari drum circles and chanting led by Priest Ellis of Judgement Yard fill the air, local ambassadors such as Miss Sonia distribute examples of Jamaica’s rich and vibrant cuisine, and school children from surrounding areas share dances, songs, and spoken word performances.

Giving Back to Jamaica

Founded by Richard Sloan, a 35th Generation Shaolin Temple Disciple and DJ himself, Soul Rebellion partnered with an onsite program manager for a spring break company named Joshua Reyes, and with N.E.E.T and the Jungle on board, created a spring break experience unique to Jamaica, featuring the island’s dynamic music and culture through its concert series, while also offering a chance to give back to the community. Students may choose to participate in Soul Rebellion’s Buy-A-Brick program by purchasing a brick for $100J, which they can decorate with their names, school slogans or other impressions. The bricks are then used to build various structures in local Jamaican school developments, establishing a special connection between the Soul Rebellion participants and Jamaica’s school children. This year’s resource disbursement will take place on March 23rd, and will benefit the Mt. Airy Basic School.

"Each year Jamaica welcomes thousands of visitors during spring break, and with Soul Rebellion’s program we are excited to offer more than a typical spring break getaway," said John Lynch, Jamaica’s Director of Tourism, in advance of the 2009 series. "The concert series and Buy-A-Brick program will leave a lasting impression on students, beyond just sun, sand and sea."

The cause of Soul Rebellion also resonates with the many artistes who have crossed the stage of the Jungle Nightclub, with recent block purchases being made by Shaggy, Rayvon, Rick Rock, Red Foxx, Lady Saw, Dj Missy, Christopher Martin, Sharon Burke, DJ Kue, and many others. Shaggy’s participation in this year's Soul Rebellion is being covered by Pat Meschino, writing for Billbaord. Soul Rebellion remains the singular Spring Break concert series, and is the only event taking place in this market to routinely attract attention from international media, such as delivering Mavado, and now Shaggy, a feature article in Billboard Magazine, Reuters News, the Washington Post, Yahoo and ABC News, as well as coverage in lifestyle and culture magazines and blogs such as Outaroad.com, Complex, and XLR8R.

More Artist should take on the lead to give back to Jamaica... I respect Shaggy.. At least he is taking time to give back something to the country. It's not always about making the dollars!!
