Vegas' Gospel Song Up Deh Gains Momentum In The Streets
The surging popularity of Mr. Vegas' gospel-flavoured single Up Deh has caught everyone by surprise, including Mr. Vegas, whose other gospel single, I Am Blessed, is already a bonafide chart hit, bolting up all major reggae charts here and overseas.
The popularity of 'Up Deh' could be considered as a pleasant surprise or 'brawta' (unexpected bonus), as it is known in the local parlance.
"The Up Deh song is huge. I thought that I Am Blessed was the song, but Up Deh is gaining momentum everywhere and more people are
requesting it even more on the radio, it ah play hard so I am
pleasantly surprised at this development," Mr. Vegas said.
The popularity of 'Up Deh' has inspired Mr. Vegas to use the rhythm track to create a musical project and he has approached two of his superstar friends to join him on the rhythm.
The rhythm project will appear on Vegas' own Clifford Ray label.
"I've given the riddim to Lady Saw and to Elephant Man for them to do gospel songs as well. We're going to turn it into a juggling riddim that should do quite well this summer," he said.
Vegas has an uncanny knack of making hits. After jumping into the spotlight with Nike Air, his next single, "Heads High", had a successful chart run in the UK and a #69 peak on the Billboard R & B chart. In 1998, his debut album, Heads High, was released, which hit #5 on the US Reggae chart. Vegas won a MOBO for Best Reggae Artist for the Heads High album as well. 2000's single "Hot Gal Today" was a minor hit on the US R&B charts, peaking at #66.
