Bob Marley's firstborn son speaks out in defense of his father

Earlier this week, Grammy Award-winning recording artist Ziggy Marley stopped by VIBE’s New York City offices to talk about his latest release, Family Time (Tuff Gong / Universal), as well as a new album of his father’s classic songs, many of them remixed for young listeners, called B is For Bob (Tuff Gong / Universal). At the end of the video interview, Bob Marley’s firstborn son shared his views on a controversy that has engulfed Jamaica for the past two and a half weeks.
On April 22, the veteran reggae star Buju Banton- who has been nominated for three Grammys himself - was speaking at the University of the West Indies in Kingston, Jamaica, about his latest release, Rasta Got Soul (Gargamel Music). Banton spoke at length about his own distinguished career, but one of his remarks resonated louder than the others.
"You know they say that the greatest musician in Jamaica is Bob Marley," Buju told the crowded room. "I don't believe that because we have greater musicians to come. Bob was the most promoted, and well promoted, and we have to appreciate that because it's our culture. But don't kill our culture… Enough is enough."
Although the crowd at UWI reportedly applauded his remarks, they were not as well received outside the lecture hall. Jamaican media as well as radio shows and websites around the world have been flooded with outraged remarks from music critics and Bob Marley's millions of fans. When asked for his thoughts on the matter, Ziggy laughed for a long time before speaking his mind.
"Me love my father, you know? And me love all of my elders and my heroes. And I would never say anything to put down any of them. From Bob to Toots to Peter [Tosh] to Bunny [Wailer]. I wouldn't say anything to put down any of those guys. You understand? I lift up them. Those are our heroes. We lift them up. We don't put them down."
After a brief pause, Ziggy added the following: "My father wasn't a person who brag about himself. It's what he has done that has made people speak of him how they speak of him. He just does his music and that’s it… You got people who think differently but my father and a lot of these artists, you can't even talk about them in just the sense of Jamaica. It's the world we haffi talk bout. So that's all me have to say, we lift up our heroes we don't put them down."
When contacted, Tracii McGregor, President and General Manager of Buju Banton's label Gargamel Music Inc., had this to say in response: "Buju didn't say anything to slight the great Bob Marley-not at all. Buju is not the first person or lover of reggae music to say this. This is the reality. We can't have an industry revolve around one person."
McGregor also blamed the media for blowing the controversy out of proportion. "This man spoke for almost an hour and a half, and for them to take one line and take it out of context and out of perspective, I was so hurt. He also talked about Bob's sons and the affect on their music. They are not allowed to create and develop in their own way. People always compare them to their father. I know it’s frustrating for them. And other artists have suffered because they don't come from that lineage. The industry has kept it like that. Still to this day major record labels don’t know how to market this music."
To watch Ziggy Marley's Boomshots interview, tune into VIBE.com next week.

Buju was right. We need to get out of our head that there will never and can never be another as great as Bob Marley while still acknowledging of course the fact that he was a great artiste. It is possible that there will will be anothe just as great. My two fave reggae artistes as a matter of fact are Garnett Silk and Buju Banton.
We need to stop comparing EVERYONE to Bob.
Posted on May 31, 2009 18:10
I totally agree with Buju Banton, Bob Marley is so overrated
Posted on May 31, 2009 18:53
buju too hype and out a order this him is no different from flippa mafia who tried to diss bounty buju guh one side before mi send some man fi cut off the yuh fake lox
Posted on May 31, 2009 19:08
@Anonymous shut u stinking mouth an tap chat sh*t a u muma overrated.NIGGAZ WILL BE BAD MIND AGAINST THEM ONE ANOTHER WHEN THEY ARE NOT ON TOP.BUJU GO FIND SOME HIT TUNE AN STOP FRET OVER DEAD MAN LEGACY
Posted on May 31, 2009 19:15
I have to agree with Buju as well..yes, Bob Marley was a great artist, but there were alot of artist that was instrumental in his success, like Peter Tosh who taught Bob how to play the guitar and was also a great musican and writer in his own right. I can go on n' on about why Bob was promoted over many of our other talented musican but I would rather show my appreciation for him being the ambassador for reggae music worldwide.
Posted on May 31, 2009 19:17
i agree 1000000 percent with the gargy. john holt, delroy wilson, joseph hill, tosh, millie, judy mowatt, the list goes on and on and on. sometimes i wish myself jamaican. but the thing is yes, bob was gggrrreeeaaattt, however, why does he seem to be the one everyone else is judged by. he has his own style, yes, what about lt. stitchie, prof. nuts etc....
Posted on May 31, 2009 19:55
If Bob Marley is so overrated then who is better? The same Buju Banton who made songs like Browning and Stamina Daddy, or the same Buju whose style is patterned after Bob, give me a break.
Posted on May 31, 2009 20:32
beenie man got more number ones than bob marley suh buju have a point
Posted on May 31, 2009 21:43
buju really hit it big with 'til shiloh when he transformed his vocal style to sound like bob. he should be thanking bob for his career.
the electronic programmed music can hardly compare with studio recordings. real instruments are better than electronically produced music so in that sense bobs music is better.
bob was also a perfectionist requiring days sometimes to record one song. nowadays it is a slap dash thing. so in that sense bob's music is better. nobody harmonises nowadays... one man goes in a studio and covers his own vocals. so yes in that sense bob's music is better.
the political climate of that time allowed bob to be more influential than an artist who comes after him can be. the country was looking for a galvanising image and bob filled the spot. he brought rastafarianism to the fore. even though rasta is still villified in some circles it's more understood now than before.
the most influential artist since then has been sizzla.
buju i understand what you are saying but sometimes it is better not to say something. what now if bob is no longer promoted and with his image fading away so does reggae on the international scene. and who should be promoted more than bob marley. who will have the international appeal. the commercially viable music with the concious message. buju know your place and be glad you have a place.

unnuh late to raas wid dis article. It is soo one month ago inna The Ja. Ob. Wah mi waan know afta unnuh kill wi wid dem boring post b 4, dis is all unnuh can come up wid???
Bob is di greatest untill smaddy prove demselves worthier. Mi si weh Buju a come from but him fi memba seh when man like Bob a struggle fi buss, Jamaica nevva recognize di full potential of reggae, hence it was treated as ole cabba-cabba, ghetto music. Wossa yet, him go tun rasta. How much a unnuh did bawn inna di days when to b a rasta inna Jamaica was considered synonymous wid 'tief and ganja smoka'??? Dem time deh when u live inna nyebahood, if any baddy house bruck is di nearest rastaman police lockup and probably beat. Dese r the contraints weh Bob had to face and him was able to break outa di mold and stereotyping of dat era. It was not handed to him. A farrin him affi go get him buss! Den Jamaican recognized him. It also happen to quite a few artiste inna di 70d and 80s. Most a dem did affi buss dem song a place like England fuss b 4 dem get likkle recognition a yaad. Lucky fi Bob, him ting come een at a time when di world needed it. His music was then embraced and revolutionised the world. Suh Big and Scary him words was dat CIA decide fi kip an eye or several pon him. Now tell mi which of dem artist yah inna dese days get dem attention deh? Yes lots of dem deh inna di legal system but is fi pickney maintainance and gun charges. Dem words do not invoke spirits to riot and break oppression. Dat is why Bob Marley is considered the greatest. Di effect of his music is far reaching and provokes the same types responses till dis day. His song One Love, is now a worldwide anthem. It has been added to hymnals to sing in churches. All denominations, race and creed can relate to it. Who unnuh tink woulda put di words of Romping Shop (One a mi favorite music by di way), inna nuh hymnal or sing it pon world stage?
Now fi another Jamaican artiste fi reach dat height him challenges will be greater. His/Her hurdle will be not only to change the face of reggae music as di world sees it now (Basically Bob style a music), but to invoke and provoke more shattering responses, that can once and for all put him on the pedestal that Bob Marley now enjoys. He will have to be the next great, who now becomes the measuring stick by which new commers in music will be judged. It wont be handed to him, he has to reach and grab that position most aggressively. But, it hard. It won't be done by doing a daggering song, or saying Zagga Zow. It won't be achieved by saying "him cross, angry, and miserable, or playing in di romping shop. It won't happen wid clashes or being a So Blessed. To achieve this, Him will have the minds of people of this entire world to deprogram from Bob Marley type a reggae. From the suckling babe, to the old wid stick. It can be done tho. We Jamaicans, and greatness is in all of us. To all who a try dis Bob pan dis site, memba dis, if it wasnt fi him, nuff annuh favorite artiste wouldn't get di time a day inna nuff a di countries now weh dem a tour. Men lik Bob, Toots, The Wailers, Peter Tosh, and all others from that era, were the ones who paved the way. Think bout it b 4 unnuh come chat bout Bob over rated. How much a dem new artiste yah woulda walk wid carton box wid dem records a sell inna sun-hot and nuh get discourage when pple throw piss pon u from dem gate? Embrace Bob fi what him is and what he has done, while freeing u mind that a next Bob is in the making. Nutten nuh wrong wid dat. By di way, mi nuh si weh Buju seh as disrespect...not if u follow di context weh him a come from.

DAGGA RAJAH F#%K OFF AN LEAVE THE GENERAL BUJU BANTON ALONE, THOUGH BOB MARLEY IS A GREAT ARTIST AN ALL, BUT BUJU HAS A POINT, U HAV WILL HAV OTHER PROMISING ARTISTS NOW AN IN DI FUTURE AND WAT ABOUT PETER TOSH AN THOSE OTHER PIONEERS OF REGGAE? SO SHUT U NASSTTYY CROTCHES BOWAS MOUTH AN BILL A DAT MI A TELL U.

ppl learn to reason out things. bob did what he did, good music and the result talk for it self after, its not the media or bob put his self where hes at is the ppl...is not like a beenie man who give his self king...buju and others need to jus do there thing and make them music speak for it self too
Posted on June 1, 2009 03:16
The lenged Bob Nesta marley, is not just a name , but a phenomenon. His works to liberate mankind is quite appreciated all over the world.Young musicians like buju should draw from his inspiration and the road he (marley) created for raggae music to be loved all over the world to furthur their carrier. He shouldn't compare cause there is no basis for comparism.
Posted on June 1, 2009 08:29
If Bob Marley is not the greatest reggae artist who is? You can talk about Beenie Man have more number one than Bob all you want, that doesn't mean any thing.Bob Marley dead and gone over 20 years now and he's still out selling all these so call reggae greats dead or living. The fact of the matter is no one has done what he did for the music. You have to Beat the champ to Be the champ, so until then Bob Marley is the greatest

This is in response to Zaga comment about beenieman having more number ones thatn bob, more number ones where? get yu facts together yute. Everybody a seh how bob get promoted more than the other artists, a foolishness that, Nowadays there are much more effective options of promoting than in bob's time. Bob got popularity through him music.Peter tosh dem mi rate dem but a fi dem fautl why dem nu get the recognition what bob get, bout dem nah tek nu iron bird, o plz.Unu need fo watch bob interview dem, unu eva see him dres up dress up ina dem, but yet stil all bbc a run him dung n di man a gi dem it simple. unu fi buil, buju jus vex because him nah get the recognition wah bob a get, n as a matta of fact he will neva get dat recognition. Furthermore buju need fi easy, because him popularity grow worldwide wen him start du d saaaame type of music bob did, buju need fi stop badmind.

@Meleon, from the very first time i read a post from you..i was like...I LIKE THIS GIRL (dont get it twisted folks) and now i see why. Wonderful response. You could not have said it any better. Also, mi nuh too inna Vybz Kartel and some of these dancehall songs, but mi LUV ramping shop...affi dance to it when mi hear it.
Outaroad - unnu late wi dis this article fi true, this went down in April.
I also agree with Buju he was not disrespecting Bob. JA somewhat has been stereotype to many foreigners. When u say JA, two things are mentioned, WEED & BOB. I often wonder what happen to the rest of us who dont smoke weed, are we not Jamaicans also? Buju was pointing out that they are other LIVING great artists except Bob. He was not trying to dethrone the 1st King Of Reggae, he was only trying to point out that other artists are there so when a person say Reggae, Bob will not be the only name that is mentioned
Posted on June 1, 2009 11:07
@Afghanistan I gree with you a 100% I bob marley was just better and it will continue to be that way. Not one of the present artistes dem song last for more than a year, and if buju and others never a waste dem time a big up b*tty man dem career would be on a higher level - if yuh f**k round sh*t you will end up inna sh*t rasta
I Bob Marley stay far away from b*tty man I never once put them on my mind because from them deh pon yuh mind then yuh a bl**dclaat b*tty man as well rasta
P.S. Fishermen think about fishing and b*tty man think about sh*tty b*tty
Big up mi son and gwaan win the grammies dem

no one neva sey bob no great bcuz everyone knoiws wat he has done for reggae music but here is may question to u all no one can be like bob or better reggae music does not stop at bob marley look at sean paul and shaggy they are 2 of dancehall best selling artist and still no one sey they are the greatest so we need to stop be one minded about certain things bob is great so does that mean no we be greater. well tell your child who wants to be a reggae artist that listen you will never ever be like bob are better because he is the greatest so don't try to you will only be able to settle for second spot and see how he will feel

Buju is not totally wrong, it's hard living in someone's shadow. But if u can't say anything good about Bob Marley don't say anything at all. I think Buju, Beenie & Shaggy, all of whom have offended the Marley legacy in some way, & any other artistes, should just speak about themself & their music & not Bob Marley. Everyone keeps b*tching about why Bob is rated above all the other singers who should also be considered legendary. Apart from Chris Blackwell here's the real reason behind Bob's continuous, global popularity - RITA MARLEY. All the other potential legends, Peter Tosh, Jimmy Cliff, Dennis Brown etc etc, never fucking settled with a ride or die b*tch like Rita. You think if Bob had left Rita for Cindy his legacy would have lived on like this? Hell to the no! Rita is in Ethiopia hard at work planning Africa Unite & all the other things she has done since his death, telling people that its not her work but his. Some other b*tch would be taking all the credit, but she pushes him up front & stand strong behind decades after his death. Now let's review, Peter Tosh common-law wife wanted to sell his guitar in 07, Jimmy Cliff married to a woman who is half his age + he has no relationship with his kids, Dennis Brown f**ked around so much he died from AIDS alone & the list goes on. As for Buju, he may end up just like one of these men cause Lorna is divorcing his ass. Buju, u a mi DJ from 'Batty Rida' days, but sort out unnuself or unnu will neva have a legacy like Bob.
Posted on June 1, 2009 17:01
buju i understand what you are trying to say but BOB SHOULD NOT BE SEE AS THE PROBLEM FOR THE UNSUCESSFUL ACCLAIM OF FAME FOR YOU AND DI REST. BOB HAS CHARTED THE PATH TO SUCCESS THAT NEEDS TO BE FOLLOW CAREFULLY.
AND JUST IN CASE YU AN DI RES MISSED IT - BOB WAS NOT SELF APPOINTED AS A LEGEND, IT WAS MESSAGE IN HIS SONGS THAT SPOKE FOR HIM TO DI PEOPLE AROUND DI FUCKING WORLD ( NOT JUST JAMAICA) WHICH THEN GAVE HIM DI ACCRALEGE THAT HE HAS GOTTEN.
DI MESSAGE IN DI SONG BUJU!
DI MESSAGE!
YOU BUJU IS AN ACCOMPLISHED ARTISTE BUT YU NEED FI UNDERSTAND DAT YU STILL LEARNING.
YOU CAME TO BARBADOS AN COULD NOT EVEN BE HUMBLE ENOUGH TO TAKE A ROUTINE SEARCH TO; YOU HAD TO CREATE A SENCE DAT SEEMED LIKE U WERE DISRESPECTING AUTHOURITY.
RELAX YOU ARE NOT BOB OR LIKE BOB.
Posted on June 1, 2009 17:51
Buju me love UR songs and UR style, but U way Out of order. U can say that we R living on the Bob memory, the man is who he was and U can stop that. No one will ever reach that pinacle or status of the graet one. Much respect Buju But don't ever try to di's the legend again, me will throw away all UR f******* music i've collected for the last 15 years. Big respect to "THE GREAT BOB MARLEY" and the marley siblings. All the way from PANAMA. CALITO

Buju needs to take a chill pill,Bob Marley is the greatest musician to come out of Jamaica,he paved the way for many dj's singers, singjays etc. Buju is jealous of him ! Did he think that the song which he sang called 'PELPIT' could be bigger than a One Love? Or a No Woman No Cry ? Is this man for real? Bob has countless wonderful hits which move people, they're deep and very real,Bob wasn't a fake he was the real deal ! he put Jamaica on the map,the majority of tourists come to jamaica because of Bob ! a lot of musicians that you see performing came into the entertainment world because of Bob, this man has inspired so many people both near and far,he was a real soldier who fought for reggae music to get the recognition which it deserves! BUJU claims that Bob Marley's children are living in his shadow, but what about Buju's children? aren't they living in his shadow? I think that Bob's children are getting the recognition they deserve! they are great artiste themselves and millions of people show them lots of love and respect! I really didn't expect this from a so-called rasta man! Buju looks like he's on very hard drugs in his interviews ,I think he needs professional help! The people have spoken and they say Bob is the greatest musician out of jamaica!!! Full Stop!
Posted on June 1, 2009 18:22
Buju is a daam fool bout if u call bob the greatest the music is getting stifled utter nonsense...when people call Jordan the greatest is that stifling basketball..when people say pele is the greatest is that stifled football.
Buju stifled reggae when him mek boom by bye is him mek shabba take all the blame for the one song he has ever done about d fish dem.
somebody explain to me how calling something the greatest mean's there is nothing to better than can follow
Posted on June 1, 2009 18:53
I guess Buju got what he wanted from making such comments...Publicity for his album.

The man seh it is possible for someone to be greater than bob.... nobody kno what the future holds so buju never dis bob an all who cant see that jus plain dark and dunce... me woulda love fi see somebody emerge better than bob cuz that would a just good fi jamaica... bob still gonna be a legend though so dis wah unuh a quarell bout a foolishness
Posted on June 1, 2009 23:02
Buju mi ovastand weh u a seh, but memba seh Bob Marley is and will always be the foundation of reggae. So if Bob music and his legacy is no longer "promoted", it is likely that the future generations to come may not know who is the founding father of this wonderful music we call reggae. Focus on building our music with the strong foundation (who is Bob Marley) that it stands on and please continue to have a positive in this industry....One love...A dat mi seh

Amazing that no one has reflected on Ziggy's response to Buju's remarks.
Ziggy has the right spirit and I applaud him. in light of the situation, he could have blasted Buju, but instead, he focused on what was positive; that is to uplift and elevate our heroes. Bob Marley is not just a Jamaican icon he is a Global Icon. He stood for so much. He fought for so many. His legacy will live on for ever. I am a fan of all genres and most artiste; but let us all stop for a minute and think about Bob Marley's historical contribution and relevance...now let's compare his struggles, accomplishments, lyrics, melodies, and impact to say ... Buju, or Beres...or Movado or Bounty...or Beenie, Capleton, Ninja man, Freddie McGregor, Tony Rebel, Shaggy, Sean Paul, Jacob Miller, John Holt....I could name every artiste from Jamaica and the comparison is just not fair...not every artiste have goals. If Buju would like to be in the "Greatest" category, he would have to start his career over and remove alot of his blemishes, and find a voice.
Buju doesn't even help other artiste, he doesn't support all of his children and he doesn't represent any group of "unheard" people...really and truly, apart from 'Til Shiloh...what statement has Buju made...NONE!
There are a lot of greats, even listed in the names I mentioned above; but guess what who's the greatest? At this juncture, Robert Nesta Marley...period.

Why some of these dreads allow power to corrupt themselves. Bob Marley took Reggae Music to the international world, he is be-known world-wide, that is the way it is and the way it will stay-written in history----so if a dread want to be as famous and respected as Bob his works will have to achieve that...NOT A LOAD OF CRY BABY TALKING DOWN THE LEGEND WILL ACHIEVE IT. Bobs work achieved his success not propaganda.... What is inside of a man will come to light, as with this dread speaking negative words against a legend is a disgrace and exposes what really is inside of him...... JEALOUSY..

So, what we are saying is “out with the old and in with the new”, we need to have a sense of traditions people. If you think that Bob should not be recognized for his accomplishments, you have no value for history. While we are forgetting Bob let’s forget our national heroes and everything that true Jamaicans hold true. How long will it take you to forget Usain Bolt? Buju is a great artist and deserve all the respect he gets but if he has no sense of traditions, culture or heritage perhaps, he needs to listen to “Buffalo Soldier” by Bob Marley. I can remember a time when a woman and a child could walk the streets at anytime without fear of being shot but I guess that was the old days… ooh, I’m 38. Bob is my legend and like our rich Jamaican history, I will never forget him. Buju please retract your statement and let us move on, I forgive you and Jamaica do too. I’m a Jamaican and proud of it….. What’s shocking to me is that he was speaking on a university campus addressing college educated Jamaicans and he was not reprimanded for his speech. I never graduate from high school but I know that Buju’s choice of words were wrong.

Coming like dey love worship idol. the bl**dklaat man gone ah zion (bob marley). mi no hear no talk bout peter tosh, neither andrew tosh. it's only tuff gong fi hold the money and the attention? what the gargamel fi seh mi a go seh. dem a worship bob marley like him is his majesty. the whole rasta ting revolve round bob, like him is his majesty. a just the jamaican tourist board who no have no ability fi mek money excpt use rasta bout "come to jamaica, no problem". the bl**dklaat dollar worth eleven cents and the whole a wi in foreign a suffer under the roman dem. if it wasn't youth and youth the music wouldn't stay relevant. a just the same old one drop. man haffi step it up. bob marley represent a generation of unmentioned heroes in many fields. it's not a one man ting (dennis brown, gregory isaacs and junior reid). the whole world get mix up. bob marley is not our leader, him is just we expression and more expression a come. just like bob seh, is a stream that come out of man. and the foreigner dem, dem no know noting. dem have time fi comment bout wah dem no know about. and the one ziggy, the youth never seh nothing bout the gong. him just a represent a different time.

I will love Bob forever not just for his music but his love for Africa ,demonstated by his visit to Kenya , Ethiopia and performance in Zimbabwe. He was a man who did not just talk the talk but walked the walk. Today most reggea artists give lip service to Repatriation and African Unity. Nevertheless i understand what Buju is saying ,my advice Keep Walking the walk for Lord knows we are ready to crown another.

one thing a man has to understand, what makes one a king the life we living.bob marley would let his gates open and people would come to his place.no superstar would dare!mohamed ali lost his title for the love of vietnamise!etc
so all da good bob did plus his music made him the king.DEEP INSIDE bob marleys HEART the man was clean not even to through a stone at peter tosh.Peter tosh wife even said after the tosh shootin, that not peter would let many people in his house, but bob would!every time bob would say peace, love and Music.and i say too PEACE LOVE AND MUSIC JAH BLESS

ROBERT MARLEY REMAINS THE GRAETEST IN SO MANY WAYS, HE IS WORL WIDE ACCLAIMED AND HE WAS A MESSENGER OF PEACE AND LOVE. PEOPLE LIKE BUJU SHOULD BE EDUCATED ON THE VALUE OF HISTORY.
