Predictably, Dancehall Artistes Start Tearing Each Other Apart

Vibez Kartel doing the Crab in a Barrell dance

I Am, Amy Ashwood
Letter To The Editor

vybzkartel_bountykillerbeenieman_arrested.jpgOn behalf of all the persons who gripe but do not write, I am begging broadcast programmers to reconsider the content of entertainment programmes between now and the December holiday seasons. If what was aired on TVJs Entertainment Report on Friday, November 7 is any indication of what is to come, we can look forward to a Filth-Filled Christmas.

The programmer explained that he sought only to expose what was in the mind of international dancehall entertainer and current chart topper Vibes Kartel. I think that a documentary would have been a better vehicle to expose how he aggrandises his songwriting prowess, endorses his products and degrades another working-class dancehall artiste. He ended his taunts of that fellow artiste with the call “bill!” - a reference to the bill cutlass that will hook, cut and tear in one motion. In truth, this is an old tactic. Every year around this time dancehall artistes try to build the hype around themselves so that they can charge big fees during the holiday season.

The ER feature included clips of Kartel assaulting the viewer with a toy gun, and the producer added to the assault by including a gunshot audio to that motion. The effect of creating a menacing moment on an entertainment programme in prime time was achieved. This was so disrespectful to viewers and wrong for the type of programme.

Among Kartel’s claims is that he is the “baddest DJ in the history of dancehall” and that Jamaican people will be the judge of this. I have taken the liberty to distill some of what he has been promoting since the start of 2008:
ReadMore-color.jpg

* Life Sweet: I have no money but bullets are in my gun. Life is sweet.
* Daggering: Rough Sex
* Trailer Load of Money: We want plenty money fast, like we print it
* Work Out: Graphic description of a woman’s actions during the sex act
* He can kill someone as easy as exposing numbers on a SIM card; Kingfish seh Adi de devil too damn hard

Gentle reader, I work alone. I am not a part of the fight-out-Adi network. I am a sniper, an independent exterminator on a quest to protect Brand Jamaica from Adi promoting himself as an “authentic Jamaican” putting himself in the same league as the Olympians.

I am imploring entertainment journalists and programmers to prevent hyped up megalomaniacs from shaping our Christmas public broadcasting space for their ghoulish purposes. 2008 was supposed to be the year of Two Thousand and Love; it can still end on Two Thousand and Great.

I am,

Amy Ashwood

The person who wrote this article clearly knows little about dancehall, the slangs and expressions used in our music and have misinterpreted a whole lot of what was said. When Kartel says 'bill' he wasnt refering to a cutlass, he was saying to mavado to 'bill' and in that case it means,'chill', 'go easy' 'billback' so thats your first mistake. The little toy gun incident wasnt assaulting to me as a viewer so you cant speak for viewers in general and because it is an entertainment program and they are trying to portray kartel as he brands himself as a badman, the little clip with the toy gun was used jokingly to bring across his image.Dont be a hypocrite about that little toy gun because i know you go to movies or watch movies and when you see them on tv with their guns i know you dont feel assaulted so please dont try to take a unjustified jab at dancehall with these unreasonable claims.Think about what you are saying and understand the music and culture and the puns and metaphors these artiste use some more before attacking dancehall music like this.

It seems kinda like ur hating on Kartel and not on the "bigger" picture. I started your article on the hopes that it had something to do with pin pointing the violent and aggressive depiction of our music, but all i have read is a note which should be entitled "I hate kartel". Your points are a lame attack at one of our better Jamaican artist and songwriter. I would probably be in agreement with your article if you had mentioned other Djs and singers because i thought you were focusing on the music industry and not on less than 5% of who is adding to the problem. Why not bring up the gangsta foundation badboy artists such as Cobra and Bounty, Spragga and Terror Fabulous and bring your argument up to speed with Movado, Bling dog and Elephant man, Throw in some Sizzla and Capleton, Ever artist has had there "gangsta" phase with lyrics that are violent and linger on the edge of aggression. Your one sided plea will fall on deaf ears because anyone with sense would realize that you clearly have a hatred for Kartel in your heart and are looking for followers. As neutral as i am, i have to stick out and say all your doing is hating. learn to write before calling yourself a journalist. Nicholas.

Dear all,

Wanthood here - Thanks for the time that you took to write about my comments. Please allow me to respond.

I am focusing on Kartel at this time, because the tv producer allowed him to hurt me on TV. This letter was not intended to be a general comment on popular Jamaican music.

I am sure that we can agree that Friday 8 p.m. on public tv is not the same as viewing something on the Internet or a movie or going to an adult-only venue.

At the beginning, the video maker let us know that he was pointing out Kartel's most recent aggressive behaviour. If so, then put it in a documentary and not in what is supposed to be a fun entertainment show.

I have not interest in trying to stop Kartel from writing or making money. I want the ER producers to respect viewers and not give this this kind of behaviour, by him or others, the privilege of prime time.

Thanks for reading.

Gone to get some wood for my fire.

Regards,

Amy

1. I agree with 'AGENT'. Amy doesn't know what she is talking about. If you don't like dancehall....shut you mouth. WE LIKE DANCEHALL.

2. You cannot solve Jamaica's problem by attacking Kartel, Movado or any artistes lyrics.

3. The truth is that all you are doing is CLASHING them (in the 'formal' way you prefer) because you want to become a well-known writer! You are no better than them. Looking a 'hype'. A cheep sleezy uninformed and malicious hype.

mie nuh Jamaican but truss mie when mie say dis; Jamaican Dancehall is nolonger nice like it used to be, Back inna d' Days. Nowadays the Lyrix have become so Ruff, content so much sexualised. It's so Sad u know. Dancehall is so Popular in Africa, especially Zimbabwe, but now most of us have switched to Conscious Muzik, Descent lyrix is wah we promote, cau Muzik isnt only 4 the Adults; it's 4 the Young Ones too. when i throw a Party, instead of this morden f****ry, I would rather play some late 90's Tunes from Men i respect so highly, men like Degree, Ghost, Harry Tolder, Zebra etc Dancehall was Dancehall, Not DanceHole

Everyone is entitled to there own opinion but when it has nothing to with you are your kind you must keep your mouth shut. Everything a (BLACK MAN) does as negative is portrayed negatively and the positive things that they do are looked down on. ALL AMERICAN MOVIES PLAY US AS THE BAD GUYS AND THROUGH LIFE IF YOU ARE NOT DENZEL WASHINGTON OR WILL SMITH YOU WONT SELL. WHEN WHITE PEOPLE MAKE GANSTA MOVIES WHAT THEY PORTRAY IS NOT BAD BECAUSE ITS JUST A MOVIE BUT IF BLACK MAN MAKES A GANSTA MOVIE ITS GARBAGE. THIS IS HOW I FEEL ABOUT THE EDITOR WHAT YOU WROTE IS GARBAGE. IF YOU CANT GIVE THE CREDIT TO THE PEOPLE THAT THEY DESERVE DONT PASS YOUR OPIONION HERE BECUASE IT SEEMS HYPOCRITICAL AND IT HAS TOO MANY DOUBLE STANDARDS.

Amy, you have some solid points. I was also a little bit disturbed by some aspects of the interview.

I think you were off point with the reference to 'bill'... the current meaning is 'buildback' or build ( bill) i.e wheel and come again.

With him showing a toy gun, we have to take it a little more serious, as I think he lost his visa for being found with a Gun in New York. Had his own firearm license and gun taken away, was also taken in for questioning on gun charges. so when he points a gun in a threatening way, we must be concerned.

It is also disturbing that he hits out at people earning their honest bread as barbers, by using it in a derogatory fashion, Movado did the same think of the Jerk Chicken man, who should be commended for making a living and not depending on anyone else.

it is a reflection of us that Gun tunes and gyal tunes and anti bow cat and anti b*ttyman tunes get the biggest forwards. we can do out best to change that by requesting/ buying other types of music, until that happens, they will continue to give us thew same diet.

So.. to keep it fair you not gonna do an article ..on the Mavado interview?

why do you call yourself wanthood.. or was it you.. not attacking you.. but someone suggested washwood would have been much closer...

So we all agree make Mavado finish him ...and then then those who knows better give a chance fi recovery and if he refuses .."M**der Him Bl**d Cl**t".. - according to the WAR LORD

kartel did not say that he's the baddest he said he is one of the baddest and plus what if him have a toy gun fi real, mobie create the most crime and not dancehall but nobody blame the movies from the westerns to these modern movies that give these guys ideas

indstreet:

I am appalled with the violence in Jamaica- but to say Kartel is not a real Jamaican is blatantly ignorant. Jamaica has one of the highest murder rates in the world-therefore we have several violent Jamaicans-TRUE JAMAICAN!
Also, you deliberately mislead the readers with Kartel quotation. He clearly says “ONE" of the baddest dj in the history... (your omission of the word “one” shows your bias; you paint Kartel to be overly boastful by placing himself above everybody else ).
Personally, I AM NOT A PRO-EVIL... JAH SEY LOVE; SO I AM TOTALLY FOR THAT. But I know there are several Jamaicans looking forward to sting 2008 (I have no desire to go; never been there) so to insinuate that it is one of the filth in the Christmas season...you are saying several Jamaicans are intrigued by shit. So please don’t bash dancehall, it is a violent genre- a true Jamaican genre. If it is too harsh, well listen to techno.
However...I do agree with your emphasis on censorship...I do believe our broadcasting Media can do a better job. But this is no premise to say it is denounce Vybz Kartel or any other dancehall artist... They are just as important as the Olympians; over even more.

Jah Love...

my god....AMY CRACK HOUSE OR AMY WANT-HOOD....(WHICH EVA) people like unu are just plain badmind, mi know most a unu woulda seh unu agree, but as kartel said jamaicans are easy to mislead, people dnt let this dumb, sarcastic so called wanna be intellectual journalist fool u, what is this? blind can't lead the blind check it fo real..the guy said bill, u r a perfect example and definition of the word dunce, most of u guys go to school get good grades an go by de book an SAY OH I'M BRIGHT N INTELLIGENT, please...if thats de case yall dnt know shit. BILL in jamaican terms means to relax, behave or just simply remain calm, u gaaawn dig up sum terminology fi luk like a shrewd....IT NUH CUT IT...let me address u like an intelligent citizen of jamaica and a proud fan of dancehall music...movado and kartel are both productive artistes in their own right, u can not take that away from them. now dancehall music has no limitations when it comes unto lyrics as a matter of fact music on a whole is not limited to a set way of delivery or lyrical content. the tvj programme ER is directed to please fans of the entertainment fraternity. dnt try and be selfish because u dis like de guy, u cant generalise it, i would suggest u do a survey in our little country call jamaica and see how much people would say they have a problem, i think it would be a minority, damn ur soooo self centred n stupid gosh lady, r u even one? dnt try n use words to paint a negative picture on our dancehall culture, I MEAN HOW DO U SEE UR SELF OF RELEVANCE I NEED TO KNOW? i bet you cant even answer dat right. now most of u guys that agree with this pessimistic individual seem to be just like her...people go into a party and see how much people get excited when a VK tune starts to play. U UPTIGHT DUMB ASS INDIVIDUAL NEED TO LIGHTEN UP...now the toy gun issue was just for flava in that interview given the fact that vybz kartel portray his self as an hardcore gangsta lyricist....I'M NOT NO DUNCE SO U CANT CONVERT MY INTELLECT, UR TRYING TO USE UR IDIOSYNCRASY AGAINST PEOPLE FI GAIN RECOGNITION.. its not about her opinion its how she bring it across. WHO-MAN ( COZ I DNT KNO DIS WOMAN)my word to u is BILL, who are u to judge? ansa mi? unu a duh nutn fi poor people? all unu is tell people bout book an naaw teach...BILL cau de man nuh seh nothing bout CUTLASS bout. Girlfriend Amy.....I missed the point you're making.........99.999% of Jamaican don't care about the lyrical war between Mavado and Kartel. The lyrical war is just entertainment and it's part of dancehall music. Clashes started from around time of King Stitch and went to a higher level with Ninja Man. Kartel and Mavado time will come and go and the music will still be here long after their 15 minutes is up. The music is SAFE.

Amy:

Hi Folks,

Amy Washwood or Wantwood here. Wood in any form is good wood. I accept that I was wrong about the bill reference, but trust me, with so much violent talk, that was the first thing that came to me.

The reason why I am upset is because a video producer allowed a dancehall artiste to assault me through public broadcasting.

I can voluntarily go to, or stay away from any music that I do not like, but surely we must have limits for licensed broadcast media. They are not the Internet.

We no longer see smoking on TV shows partly because the smoking lobby has pressed hard for it to be banned. The relaunch of the movie ET has all the guns removed from the policemen's hands because the film makers realised in hindsight that society is probably not comfortable with children having negative views about the police.

Jamaica has a culture of ugliness and for those of us who choose to make life here we have a lot of work to do on all fronts. Curbing dancehall crassness on TV is but one very small part of it. There are many other outlets for such creative expression: cable, Internet and adult events where the sound does not carry into other people's houses.

My primary goal is to force outlandish entertainers to respect the boundaries of decency even if they do not want to embrace it.

We must want to stop the ganja smoking in Churches during funerals. Vibes Cartel's song about taking sex from a schoolgirl must not be double played again on Zip FM (2006). We have a powerful culture and we must put some value on it and protect it.

Gone to wash some wood then put fire to it.

Amy
By the way, Kingston 5 is no longer considered uptown, and I am below Torrington Bridge. Bill!

Amy you are making a fool of your self, how can you address a simple entertainment broadcast? lady i assume you didn't have nothing to do. Look on what is taking place in the wider society. your work is unnecessary and is full of trash, are you from jamaica? if not i would understand why you don't know what the term "BILL" means. However if you are from jamaica i can strongly draw a conclusion that you are ignorant towards our culture so please don't try and introduce your poor ignorance to the world. its sad to see that you guys blame entertainers and media insiders for everything that's happening right now. if you're going to point fingers why not attack dirty politicians first huh? what are you going to say now? oh i guess you meant to say BILL COSBY OR BILL CLINTON. whatever the case BILL for that matter because TVJ is a reputable broadcasting channel in jamaica so if they thought that what was taped was of indecency i'm sure they would have edited the stuff you mentioned or have it cancelled. secondly i'm sure that before the start of every (young) adult oriented programme there is a statement presented that says viewers discretion is advised right. I think you are nosy and corrupt. You are trying to get technical over some stuff that are not deemed technical, i bet you would say MOVADO has a line in his song which states he's mentally crazy, now you would probably say he's literally crazy am i right? attack criminals and leave our artistes its just a form of entertainment thats what people want to hear, if they didn't then the artiste wouldn't have so much of those specified songs you mentioned. At the end of the day you dont have to listen.

Amy says "WE MUST WANT TO STOP GANJA SMOKING IN CHURCHES AT FUNERAL"- Now you cross the bridge...not Torrington either! Ganja first of all is placed here on earth "to aid the service on man" or to obtain wisdom according to the Bible. For example [proverbs 3:18 “She [referring to the wealth of wisdom] is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her: and happy is every one that retaineth her.”]-yes the same Bible they will be reading at a funeral.
Secondly- Ganja is one of the most recognized aspect of our culture. Where the Jamaican media falls short is the lack of explanation why Rastafarians smoke it. But instead we have drown ourself with only the European teachings of scriptures and help perpetuate their supremacy (Jah guide you OBAMA..you going to need it). evidently, Jamaican Christians places stigmastism on Ganja smokers and Nyahbinghi, who reads and praises Yesus Christ, because it counters every denomination in the white empirialistic Christendom.

Amy- pleaaaaaaase love your culture, you are apart of the greatest country in the world -Jah-Mek-Yah. I am not saying we should smoking around babies, asthma, elderly or even those who have your stigmasyism. I am just saying dont imply Ganja smoking is wrong at funeral- because it is something wrong in general. Or even to say not to show Ganja on TV because it wrong for the image of our culture- its not, broadcasters and writers (such as myself) needs to place it in its write context.

Again Amy- Jah Love....p.s. I know you want good by your articles.
