Usain Bolt sets third world record as Jamaica win 4x100m

Rick Broadbent in Beijing
timesonline.co.uk

Usain Bolt added a third gold medal to his rapidly-expanding collection as a devastating third leg set up Jamaica's successful assault on the world 4x100 metres record.

The time of 37.10 seconds was stunning, taking three-tenths off the USA's mark, set 15 years ago yesterday, and underlined that these Games have seen a changing of the guard. Cynics would say that is only part down to Jamaica's ascent, with the demise of the USA also a significant factor. Certainly, defeats for the likes of Sanya Richards, Allyson Felix and Jeremy Wariner, albeit that he did lose to another American, mean the holy track trinity go home with their tails between their legs.

The USA's efforts to clean up the sport have certainly had an impact on performance, with Marion Jones in jail and Justin Gatlin banned. But Jamaica's rise has been astonishing, headed by Bolt's staggering feats and the first clean sweep in the women's 100 metres. The relay, with Nesta Carter, Michael Frater, Bolt and Asafa Powell, is the icing on the cake.

Trinidad & Tobago took the silver and Japan the bronze as Britain's title went to deserving recipients. Britain, of course, had departed the previous night when a botched changeover saw them disqualified.

OMG I am so happy for Jamaica words cant even explain. Everytime I look at the races tears come to my eyes. my heart is full. especially now that Asafa has won a gold medal and a world record to go with it. I have always loved that boy, always believed in him and Im glad things turned around for him. To all the athletes WE LOVE AND APPRECIATE YOU. Not like the Americans where you have to win to be noticed.

It brings me joy when I see videos of the Jamaican crowd so please keep posting them. It makes us Jamaicans abroad feel real good.
