Rihanna Suffered Racism At School

By Caridee Williams

RH_Rih_4.jpgRihanna has spoken out about the trouble she had growing up in Barbados with her lighter skin complexion.

The Umbrella-ella-ella singer said of her difficult school years, “It made me angry; it made me want to fight in my younger years. Having lighter skin wasn’t a problem in my household, but it was when I went to school - which really confused me at first.”

Rih, speaking to InStyle magazine also spoke of the trauma she suffered while growing up “For the first six years of school, I would go home traumatized. The harassment continued to my very last day of elementary school.”

Rih,

It's like you do not have anything positive to say about you country, and your family when discussing personal issues to magazines. Many caribbean children go through it because we are of mixed nationalities. whether you mixed with indian, spanish or chinese.

Stop making your life in Barbados to be harder than it really was, because we all know Robyn that was not the case.

Everybody in the caribbean knows that's a lie!!!
It's the opposite; light skinned ppl get more respect, better jobs and all kinds of advantages in Caribbean society!!!

Listen....Racism is different from what this child is talking about. The majority of the population in Barbados is black!!Secondly, she was light skinned...it was the dark skinned natives who got it worse in the islands. She needs to just relax and sing.

rihanna i do not believe a word that you say because the main reason why so many girls in the caribbean used chemicals to get brown is because light skin person gets more love and first preference, rihanna mi love yuh music don't let mi start hating on you

Probably they teased her because they were jealous but I still cant imagine it being as bad as she says, thing is most people in the Caribbean prefer lighter skin hence the bleaching. If you are dark skinned and educated then you have a leg up.I am dark skinned and can remember in prep school the teachers would give preferential treatment to the lighter hues in our classes, even other kids want to be their friends and suck up to them so I still cant imagine what she went through........... just cant imagine it!

well everyone experience childhood in a different way but me coming from JA i know light skin ppl always get the better end of the stick. But on the other hand i can understand that she doesn't want to embrace that part of her culture b/c i hate most think in my culture except the food.

i dont like rihanna anymore shes a complete jerk and shes only a popular singer here in america cuz shes very light skin actually shes practically white she could pass 4 being white with her skin. she needs 2 cut the crap about her being discriminated against when it was probley only jeolous brown girls. the media and society is so fucked up with all this light skin is better than dark skin cuz of GIRLS LIKE HER!

lakida:

i had really liked Rhi Rhi i still like her music............. but all this complexion talk is getting to me now. i live in d carribbean and weather ur from barbados trinidad grenada jamaica we are all 1 ppl and the culture are all basically the same so i dont understand y rihanna thinks its ok to lie about her country and caribbean ppl as a whole. caribbean ppl dont look down on ligther skin ppl they aways get preferential treatment in school work places and families..........she think she is the only light skinned person in the entire caribbean and that makes her better than us!!!!!!!!!!!! come on rhi rhi u got to do better than that.
