TV Host Assaulted at Reggae All Stars

A TV host and member of the media was assaulted by a security guard and an undercover police officer at Reggae All Stars, a show held on March 29th 2008 in Nassau, Bahamas.

The Tuff Gong show which featured Beenie Man, Elephant Man, Ky-Mani Marley, Anthony B and Tessanne Chin alongside the best Bahamian artistes such as Sammi Starr and Jah Hem was billed as a major highlight in the entertainment calendar for 2008.

Unfortunately a string of organizational problems caused some major problems for the media personnel present and in one case these minor disturbances caused a major violation.

BE TV arrived at the venue with a crew of four and had to be escorted into the venue and the backstage area by the head of security because the promoter did not have press bands available at the venue. The crew informed the promoter and security that the producer would arrive later while the crew was already shooting the first set of performances. When one of the hosts went outside, again informing security that he would only be outside for 5 minutes to pick up the producer, the problems started at the gate separating the VIP area from platinum/ backstage.

The security guard at the gate refused to let the two BE TV members back into the venue stating that without bands he could not identify them, even after the head of security confirmed that they were authorized media personnel. The security nevertheless still insisted that the two BE TV members could not re-enter the venue and engaged in an argument and eventually pushed one of them aside. When the host complained the security continued by punching him in the face and ripping his shirt. Eventually a struggle ensued which got the police involved. One would think the police would assist the BE TV crew after witnessing the security assaulting the host but instead the undercover officer provided his police number and name and handcuffed the assaulted host and forced him to exit the venue alongside the producer. The police officer not only watched the assault but wrongly arrested the BE TV crew member on top of it, abusing his position of authority and acting in the most unprofessional manner.

The matter has been reported to the police as well as the promoters of Reggae All Stars. So far no official statements have been made from either the Royal Bahamian Police Force nor the security company or the promoter.

Obviously that police officer in Nassau Bahamas is illiterate, has not common sense, is a violent person and needs proper training;he should not be a member of the police force. Is this the way they treat visitors to their Island. Had it been in Ja it would be handled in a different manner.

I was working off the island when the concert took place and I can't be sure of what happened but I will say that it would be no big shock. As a reporter with the right papers I was often refused access to areas by officers and security guards with too much power and too little brains.
If the information in the story is as they say it is, I hope that the BE TV company pursues this matter to the end and makes it as public as possible. I want performers and tv crews and reporters to feel welcome in my country.
