Grammy-nominated rapper Remy Ma shed tears yesterday in a Manhattan courtroom after she was found guilty of shooting a woman in front of a nightclub last year.
According to nytimes.com Remy Ma lawyer pleaded, “It was a case of betrayal by a member of her entourage, Remy Smith’s lawyer told the jury. They swam in her pool, borrowed her free designer clothes, used her fame as a hip-hop artist to promote their own music.
And this was how she was repaid, he said: One of them robbed her of $3,000 in cash.
In a tug-of-war over a purse she believed contained the missing cash, Ms. Smith - who clawed her way up from homelessness to become Remy Ma, a Grammy-nominated rapper - accidentally shot the woman, Makeda Barnes Joseph, in the abdomen, the lawyer, Ivan S. Fisher, told a jury in Supreme Court in Manhattan.
But the jury rejected that celebrity victim defense on Thursday. After a two-week trial, the jury convicted Ms. Smith, 26, of intentional assault, which can be punished by up to 25 years in prison. The jury acquitted Ms. Smith of charges of intimidating a witness in the case.
