The show will not go on. The Carleton University Students’ Association (CUSA) cancelled controversial rapper Elephant Man’s concert, scheduled for Oct. 4 at Capital City Music Hall, after two human rights organizations expressed outrage due to the homophobic content of his lyrics.
Shelley Melanson, CUSA president, said Egale Canada, a queer rights organization, and the Stop the Murder Music Coalition (SMM), an umbrella group that supports gay rights group Jamaicans for Lesbians and Gays, called for the cancellation.
“Because we agree with the merits and motives [of Egale Canada and SMM] we decided to cancel it,” said Melanson, who added she is not happy with the outcome.
Osmel Maynes, CUSA vice-president (external) shared Melanson’s reaction.
“I’m disappointed,” he said.
Maynes said Elephant Man was scheduled to publicly sign the Reggae Compassionate Act, which states artists who sign it will “not make statements or perform songs that incite hatred or violence against anyone from any community,” at a press conference, which would have taken place on campus Oct. 3.
Maynes said Elephant Man was set to denounce his own homophobia and promise to no longer profiteer from his albums that contain offensive lyrics.
He added that Elephant Man has not released songs with homophobic lyrics in more than five years.
