After traveling half the globe as a delegate of Jamaica living in England, April Jackson, the reigning Miss Jamaica UK will this year relinquish her title as queen.
April who won the title back in 2006 is best described as a vibrant young beauty that is very much in touch with her local heritage. At 18, April, who incidentally was born in April, is an exceptional communicator and a grounded individual that has a positive outlook on life. This former student of the Hillel Academy was valedictorian of her graduating class, and a recipient of several distinguished awards.
Not a big fan of beauty pageants April sites entering Miss Jamaica UK as a way of changing the stigma attached to Jamaicans. I entered Miss Jamaica UK because I actually have a deep love for Jamaica, I've lived here for eight years and I come back every few months because I do consider it home and honestly I just wanted to portray Jamaicans in a positive light because I do feel that although I find the rest of the world has that deep love for Jamaica, there's also a lot of negative stereotypes that I wanted to kinda change, she explains to OutAroad.com.
Currently on vacation in the island she is very much family oriented and has strong family support. April vividly recalls the day of her crowning. Winning the title on the actual day was most overwhelming; you know initially I was quite surprised to find that there wasn't any hostility amongst the contestants, however after winning sectional prizes for Best Smile & Best Personality I did find I was completely ignored after as it was assumed that I was going to be the winner. She's already been featured on the Smile Jamaica its Morning Time (Programme), and On Stage with Winford Williams.
April earlier this year made the March cover of Positive People magazine which allowed her a four page spread. Although faced with busy schedules, April is a spirited piano player who speaks both French and Spanish. She loves traveling and has already planned to visit France and Costa Rica later this year to improve her language skills, before returning in February to compete in the Miss Jamaica Universe Pageant which she confidently hopes to win. She describes herself as an over achiever and has ambitions of one day attending the prestigious Cambridge University to study Law & Economics.
Briefly describing her final months as Miss Jamaica UK April related that she continues to teach deportment to young girls and encourage them to excel and carry themselves as ladies.
Truly Jamaican, April Jackson is beautiful inside and out. She has definitely been a great ambassador for both UK & Jamaica and we look forward to seeing her next year and wish her all the best in her endeavors.
